What’s the best way to grill a steak? It depends on who you ask. Everyone’s got a different opinion about how to go about it and how cooked it should be. Admittedly, grilling steak can be intimidating, especially if it’s your first time, but it’s actually a straightforward process once you nail down the basics.

Explore the nuances of grilling a steak to perfection, from selecting the proper cut to monitoring doneness levels, and unlock a world of flavor and tenderness in every bite. Here’s the best way to grill a steak.

Ingredient Notes

First things first, you’ll need to sort out the ingredients for your steak dish. The most important things to gather are:

  • Steaks: Grill masters recommend choosing steaks that are 1.5 – 2 inches thick, though slightly thicker is better than slightly thinner, as thick cuts help retain juiciness and ensure even cooking.
  • Olive oil: You need a high-heat oil to create a beautiful sear on the steaks. Feel free to substitute olive oil with vegetable or canola oil as you see fit.
  • Seasonings: Generally, you want to keep things simple and let the flavor of the meat itself shine through. Some salt, black and white pepper, and any other seasoning of your choice should suffice.
  • Butter: A stick or two of butter helps add juiciness to the steak’s crust. It also prevents the meat from drying out during cooking.

Choosing the Best Cuts for Grilling

You will usually find three grades of beef steak in a typical supermarket: Select, Choice and Prime. This grading is assigned based on the intramuscular fat marbling of the meat and helps identify its juiciness and tenderness when cooked.

Select is the leanest of the three, meaning it will most likely dry out during grilling. You’re better off going for Choice or Prime grade steaks, as they have adequate marbling to undergo the fiery process and still come out juicy.

For the cuts, you’ll find several options:

  • Filet Mignon: Filet is prized for its melt-in-your-mouth texture and delicate flavor. Thanks to its lower fat content, it’s also less likely to cause flare-ups.
  • Sirloin: The lean nature of sirloin steak makes it an excellent choice for health-conscious consumers. It also boasts a distinctive flavor profile that differentiates it from other lean cuts.
  • Ribeye: These ultra-flavorful steaks are the ideal choice for grilling. The ribeye’s higher fat content helps keep the meat juicy even when cooked over very high heat.
  • T-Bone and Porterhouse: These cuts offer a combination of textures and flavors. Keep an eye on the bone though, so it doesn’t cause uneven cooking.
  • New York Strip: This cut is not the most tender steak, but people love it for its great bite and flavor. The lower fat content means there are fewer flare-ups during grilling.
  • Flank and Skirt Steak: The thinnest and often leanest of the bunch — these cuts are perfect for quick grilling.

Preparing Your Steak

Nailing the prep stage is essential to achieving a perfect cook. For starters, you want the steak to reach room temperature for at least 30 minutes before putting it on the grill. Next, pat the meat dry with paper towels. This will remove all moisture and allow for a nice sear. Continue patting it until you see no more moisture coming off.

Seasoning the steak comes next. The type of cut will likely determine how you approach this step. Generally, you want to coat the meat in a thick blanket of kosher salt, pepper and garlic powder. Feel free to add other seasonings, but be careful not to overdo it, as too much can overpower the flavor.

If you’re using leaner meats, it might be best to marinate the steak instead. The lower fat content of these cuts means they require an extra helping of wet seasoning to bring out the flavor profile. To make the marinade, start with olive oil, then whisk in something fresh like herbs and citrus and sweet like honey or maple syrup.

Grilling the Steak

Fire up your grill and make sure it’s nice and hot. The best way to grill a steak is to use direct heat — over the flame. This is what gives the meat that beautiful dark char. Place the seasoned steaks on the grill and let the fire do its work.

The type of cut generally determines how long you let the meat cook before flipping it. For a one-inch steak, grill each side for 3–4 minutes, depending on the desired doneness. Thicker steaks can tarry on the grill a bit longer, especially if you don’t plan on using indirect heat to finish off the cooking.

Once a side is golden brown and slightly charred, flip it and let the other side cook. Avoid flipping the steak too frequently — aim for just once to ensure even cooking. Use tongs instead of a fork to prevent piercing and losing juices.

When grilling steaks, temperature is more important than time. Grab your digital cooking meat thermometer and insert it into the thickest part of the meat, making sure to avoid the bone and fatty areas.

Monitoring Doneness

Keep in mind that while you can always return a steak to the grill if it’s not cooked enough to your liking, you can’t undo it if it’s overcooked. That’s why it’s important to monitor the level of doneness carefully. Follow this guideline:

  • Rare: 125°F to 130°F
  • Medium-rare: 130°F to 135°F
  • Medium: 135°F to 145°F
  • Medium-well: 145°F to 150°F
  • Well done: 155°F to 160°F

After you remove the steak from the grill, its internal temperature will continue to rise. Experts recommend taking the meat off when it reaches about 5˚ lower than your desired temperature to get that perfect cook inside and out.

The Thumb Test

If you don’t have a meat thermometer, you’ll have to measure the level of doneness by hand. Don’t worry, it’s a straightforward process.  Lightly touch your thumb to your index finger and feel the fleshy area.

Rare steak should feel soft with little to no resistance, almost like you’re touching raw meat. Medium-Rare should feel soft yet firmer with a bit of resistance. Medium-Well and Well-Done are generally firm with very little give when pressed.

Resting and Serving

This is the final step and potentially the most critical. After being on the grill for several minutes, your steaks need to rest so they won’t lose as much juice when cutting into them.

Culinary expert Martha Stewart recommends letting your steaks rest for half the time you used to cook them. So, if you cook the meat for 16 minutes, let it rest for 8. When resting your steaks, make a little aluminum foil tent around them so they don’t cool down too quickly.

Should You Grill Steak on High or Medium Heat?

You want to start with high heat to give the steak that flavorful char. Make sure your grill temperature is between 450°F and 500°F before placing the meat.

How to Keep Steak Juicy on the Grill

The best way to keep your steak juicy during grilling is to use tender, well-marbled meat. Ribeye, T-Bone, Porterhouse and Filet Mignon are usually the ideal choices for achieving the perfect balance between juiciness and flavor.

Master the Best Way to Grill a Steak

The secret behind the best way to grill a steak is that there really is no secret at all. As long as you pay attention to these guidelines and best practices, you’re well on your way to becoming a grill boss in no time.

The craft beer vs. draft beer debate has been raging for some time now. In today’s society, where everyone seems to care so much about labels, understanding the differences and similarities between the two can help you make informed decisions about which one to indulge in.

What Is Craft Beer?

Put simply, craft beer is an artisanal beer made by a small, independent brewer. According to the Brewers Association, a brewery may be considered small if it produces less than 6 million barrels of beer in a year.

To meet the “independent” tag, the craft brewer must own at least 75% of the brewery while the remaining 25% is owned by a beverage alcohol industry member who produces non-craft beer.

How Is Craft Beer Different From Regular Beer?

Craft beer has several distinguishing characteristics. First, it’s a custom-made brew with a keen focus on quality and craftsmanship. That means its production is driven by innovation and the brewer’s personal inclination. Because it is produced on a smaller scale, craft brewers can experiment with different techniques, mixtures and flavors to make the beer stand out.

Ingredient selection is another crucial distinction between craft beer and regular brews. Artisanal brewers prioritize the finest local ingredients in their recipes. They use a generous amount of malted barley for a full-bodied flavor and often experiment with different grains like wheat, oats or rye for that extra depth. As a result, craft beer is usually characterized by rich and complex flavor profiles.

If you prefer your beers to have a little or a lot more kick, then you’ll definitely love craft beers. These beverages are known for their higher alcohol by volume (ABV) content compared to their mass-produced counterparts. Where most regular beers typically have an ABV ranging from 4% to 10%, craft beers can have an ABV of up to 67.5%, which is the case for Snake Venom — the world’s strongest beer.

Craft Beer in the United States

Modern craft beer in the U.S. has come a long way since homebrewing became federally legal in 1978. Before then, individuals experimented with various brew recipes and methods, subject to state regulations.

The last few years have seen a massive surge in the popularity and demand for craft beers thanks to staunch support from beer lovers. As of 2022, there were 9,552 U.S. craft breweries, including 261 regional facilities that produce various styles of beer. This means you don’t have to look far to find a variety of delicious small-batch brews anytime.

What Is Draft Beer?

Draft beer refers to any type of beer stored in a cask or a pressurized steel keg and served from a tap. The containers used to store draft beer come in a variety of sizes — 5, 20 and even 50 liters — to accommodate large crowds and home consumption. Think college parties and pubs.

Why Is It Called Draft Beer?

The word “draft” originates from the old English word “dragan,” which means to draw or pull. Many countries, including Australia, Ireland and the UK, pronounce and spell it as draught, with the meaning staying the same.

Although draft beer is produced similarly to bottled or canned beer, aficionados know there is a distinct difference. Draft beer typically has a crispier, full-bodied, and bolder palate profile. This is because storing the booze in a pressurized keg protects it from the degrading effects of oxygen and ultraviolet light. The storage method ensures the beer stays fresher for longer and has a fresher taste than its bottled counterpart.

What Is the Difference Between Craft Beer and Draft Beer?

Armed with the history of these beverages, let’s delve deeper into the craft beer vs draft beer discussion. Understanding these differences can help you choose the brew that suits your preferences.

Brewing Method

Craft Beer is produced in small batches by independent breweries using a wide range of techniques as determined by the brewer. Draft beer is brewed using traditional methods and stored in large barrels or kegs.

Brewing craft beer is a labor of love, with the brewer’s personal touch evident in every sip. Draft beer brewing, on the other hand, tends to follow mass-production standards. That’s why experts often say any craft beer can be a draft beer, but not all draft beer is craft beer.

Ingredients

Craft beers incorporate high-quality and locally sourced ingredients, whereas draft beers typically use standard brewing components.

Flavor and Varieties

You’ll often find craft beers in a wide range of complex flavors, from ghost pepper spicy to chocolate chip cookie sweet and even weirder profiles like whale testicles — yep, that exists. Draft beers tend to have a more consistent and crispier appeal thanks to their unique storage and serving methods.

Availability

Due to its small-scale production, craft beer is not as ubiquitous as draft beer. In many cases, you can only find certain craft beers in regions where they are brewed or in large stores. Draft beers are more widely available worldwide.

Is Craft Beer Healthier?

According to a recent study, craft beers may be healthier than their conventional counterparts thanks to their higher phenolic compound content. Further research is required to validate these claims, and should by no means be a reason to drink irresponsibly.

Similarities Between Craft Beer and Draft Beer

Despite their distinct traits, craft beer and draft beers share certain similarities that contribute to their overall enjoyment.

For one, they’re both known for their fantastic freshness and pleasant drinking experience. Craft and draft beers are typically carbonated and served at super-cold temperatures, so every sip feels refreshing. Lastly, while craft beers have a more comprehensive range of flavors and complexities, they’re both tasty beverages that anyone can enjoy.

Craft Beer Vs. Draft Beer: Which Is Better?

Choosing between craft beer and draft beer ultimately comes down to your personal preference. At the end of the day, beer is about indulgence followed by shared laughter and togetherness. Whether you’re sipping on a handcrafted brew rich with the flavors of its unique ingredients or relishing a cold crisp lager served from a keg, the joy of beer drinking remains the same.

So let’s celebrate this golden brew in all its forms. Let’s appreciate the artistry of craft beers, the consistency of draft beers and above all, the passion and dedication that brewers put into every batch. Each pint holds a new experience, so here’s a toast to beer in all its diverse glory. Cheers!

Wanting to lose weight as fast as possible is normal if you’re putting in the work. But it can be quite unsettling if you can’t point to something that may have caused you to shed some pounds recently. You must investigate its reasons, as rapid weight loss may indicate a physical or mental health issue.

Why Do I Lose Weight So Fast?

Unintentional weight loss has several possible causes, but first, you should know what it means. The National Library of Medicine defines it as when a person loses 10 pounds or 5% of their body weight over 6-12 months and does not know why.

It’s possible to shed some pounds without changing your diet or exercise routine, but losing much too quickly could be a sign of something more serious. Any of these seven reasons could be why you’re losing weight too fast.

1. Hyperthyroidism

An overactive thyroid supercharges your metabolism, so you burn more calories and lose weight faster even if you eat well. It can also increase your rate of bowel movements and heart palpitations. This disorder is most commonly caused by an autoimmune condition called Graves’ Disease. Around 1% of Americans live with this illness, with people aged 30 and older the most likely to develop it.

Experts say Graves’ Disease is not fatal, but you must carefully manage the condition. Different treatments are available and it’s ultimately up to your doctor to prescribe the right kind and dosage based on your medical history and diagnostic tests.

2. Celiac Disease

Celiac disease inhibits your body’s ability to absorb certain nutrients, which can cause rapid weight loss. This autoimmune disorder causes the body to attack the small intestine when ingesting gluten, the protein found in wheat and other grains. That means you’re not getting the health benefits from eating pasta, pastries and most desserts — foods that normally cause you to pack a couple of pounds.

According to the Celiac Disease Foundation, lifelong abstinence from gluten is the only treatment for the disorder. Don’t worry, there’s a wide variety of foods and beverages that are naturally gluten-free, like eggs, beans, lean meats and most low-fat dairy products. Your doctor might also prescribe vitamins and dietary supplements to support your eating regimen.

3. Parasite

The presence of parasites in your gut can be why you’re dropping pounds so fast. Intestinal worms take up all your calories, so you’ll find you’re eating as usual or maybe even more but are still unintentionally losing weight. The most common symptoms include abdominal pain, fatigue, bloating and dehydration.

Talk to your doctor immediately if you’ve been feeling these and are experiencing rapid weight loss. Medication is often the best course of action, but the type depends on the kind of parasite and other relevant factors like existing health conditions and restrictions.

4. Type 1 Diabetes

The body requires insulin to turn blood sugar into energy. Diabetes hinders the pancreas’ ability to produce this insulin, so the sugar you eat doesn’t energize your body. When the cells run out of glucose, your system starts burning fat and muscles to keep your energy levels up, causing you to lose weight. Though typically common in children, anyone can develop Type 1 diabetes at any point in their life.

Other symptoms include extreme thirst and chronic fatigue, so if you’re losing a couple of shirt sizes along with these issues, it’s time to go see your doctor.

5. Stress and Depression

Going through a particularly rough time like the death of a loved one, a divorce or losing a job can cause you to lose weight quickly. These periods often involve being so lost in grief that you forget to eat. Everyday stressors like traffic and bills can also exacerbate feelings of depression, affecting your sleep cycle, which is essential to maintaining a healthy weight.

Depression affects around 8% of the population and can directly impact the health and well-being of the people around them. In many cases, you may need help from family, friends or even a professional counselor to break through the cycle. Barring any preexisting conditions, you should return to your regular weight after having time to grieve. However, if you continue to lose pounds afterward, you should talk to your medical provider.

6. Substance Abuse

People who frequently abuse alcohol, tobacco or other harmful substances are more likely to experience rapid weight loss than those who don’t. Amphetamines such as cocaine can suppress appetite, so the users sometimes don’t eat as much food, which can contribute to them shedding the pounds much quicker. Also, the physical strain from the abuse can impact overall well-being, giving them a more worn appearance.

If you think using recreational substances might be the reason for your unintentional weight loss, have an honest discussion with your doctor about your needs. They’ll recommend the best course of treatment to help you maintain your weight within a healthy range,

7. Muscle Loss

Even if you are actively trying to lose weight, you should burn fat, not muscles. When you’re not trying at all, losing muscle mass from lack of physical activity can indicate a more severe issue like immunodeficiency or cardiovascular problems. According to experts, this condition mainly affects people aged 65 years and older, but it’s never too early to work towards preventing it. A healthy diet and regular exercise can help keep your muscles fit while reducing the risk of atrophy.

Who Is Most at Risk For Unintentional Weight Loss?

Anyone can lose weight fast, but it is more common and severe in people over 65. An involuntary decline in total body weight over time can have a damaging effect on their quality of life and increase their risk of mortality.

Why Do I Lose Weight So Fast? So Many Considerations

Unexplained rapid weight loss is no joke. If you notice fewer pounds on the scale, see your primary care physician right away. Make sure to record all your symptoms and how they impact your daily life so your doctor has a better idea of what you’re going through. They’ll educate you on their diagnoses of the underlying condition and recommend the best approach. It could be one of these seven issues or another explanation, but at least you’ll know and be well on your way to proper treatment.

Looking for a fun way to hang out with friends and family this summer? You can’t go wrong with an outdoor movie night in your backyard. Enjoy the latest blockbuster or take in an old classic all from the comfort of your own home — and you won’t break the bank paying for tickets or snacks at the theater. Check out these tips on how to throw an outdoor movie night bash that everyone will love.

Establish the Basics

Before you invite guests over to kick up their feet and enjoy a flick on the silver screen, you have to set it up. That includes choosing the right location for your outdoor theater, the type of screen you’ll use and the best sound system.

Think about where you want to set up your al fresco theater. It often depends on the type of outdoor movie screen you have. Maybe there’s an obvious spot in your backyard perfectly suited for a big screen and enough seating for everyone.

Otherwise, you might have to get creative. Take your pick between inflatable screens, freestanding and portable metal frames or pull-down options. If you don’t want to splurge on equipment, you can find an affordable projector and hang up a white sheet on an exterior wall of your house.

However, if you know you’re going to host outdoor movie nights regularly, you might spring for a more advanced model. Projectors can cost anywhere from around $50 to a couple hundred or even thousands of dollars. Avid film buffs who want the best visual and audio quality can invest in higher-end projectors and sound systems that deliver a theater-like experience from the convenience of their own yard.

Set the Scene

Once you have the technical details worked out, you can focus on making your backyard theater your favorite place to hang out. You want to set the right ambiance for your outdoor movie night. That includes the proper lighting, seating and decor.

Lighting is important for any movie night, especially when you’re outdoors and have less control over natural light sources. Make sure you schedule your movie night for the right time of day, close to or after sunset — too early and the bright sun will make it hard to see the screen.

However, you don’t want to leave your guests totally stranded. Make sure there’s enough light in your backyard so people can walk around safely after dark. Consider using lanterns, string lights or other gentle, ambient light sources that illuminate the ground without throwing glare on the screen.

Bulb lights on a fence in a backyard

Since you’ll be spending a few hours sitting down, comfortable seating is a must. You can go casual with picnic blankets and pillows spread out on the grass, set up camping chairs or invest in patio furniture that doubles as comfy outdoor theater seats. A mix of options ensures everyone can get comfortable and enjoy the film.

Pick the Right Flick

Choosing the right film might be the most important part of a successful movie night. It all depends on your audience — you want something that will appeal to everyone.

Are you having family over, including little ones? Pick a family-friendly movie that has some laughs for everyone. Kids will love the novelty of watching a movie outside and the freedom to run around the yard if they get restless.

When you’re hanging out with a group of friends, you can’t go wrong with classic blockbusters, from your favorite comedies to exciting action movies or fantasy epics. Want a real thrill? Screen some underrated horror movies in October — or any time of year you’re looking for a good scare.

The film sets the vibe for the rest of the evening. Since you’re all there to have a good time, pick something fun. Unless you’re all devoted film fanatics, find a movie with a plot that’s easy enough to follow — people are likely to be socializing and getting up and down for snacks or bathroom breaks.

Provide Ample Refreshments

No outdoor movie night experience is complete without snacks and drinks. Fortunately, the refreshments are one of the easiest parts of planning your night. You can’t go wrong with classic movie theater staples, like popcorn, nachos, soft pretzels and an assortment of candies.

Since you’re conveniently located in your own backyard, you can take things a step further. Fire up the grill and make some hotdogs and burgers for your guests. Everyone loves a backyard barbecue with a show!

Man in an apron grilling

Make sure you provide an array of drinks, too. Depending on what your guests prefer, you can stock up on craft beers, cocktail ingredients or your favorite wine. Offer non-alcoholic drinks to ensure everyone can quench their thirst.

If you want to take things to the next level, serve drinks based on the film you’re showing. Take inspiration from the cult classic “The Big Lebowski” and make white Russians or create your own cocktails. Show off your bartending skills and your film knowledge at the same time with custom drinks based on your favorite movie.

Expect the Unexpected

If you’ve ever planned an outdoor event, you know unexpected issues can pop up quickly. Take all precautions to ensure things run smoothly, like checking out all the equipment beforehand. You don’t want to be caught without the right cable to connect your laptop to the projector when you’ve got a full audience waiting for the show.

However, some issues are unavoidable. Having a backup plan is essential when you’re hosting an outdoor movie night. Check the forecast frequently leading up to your party. If you’re expecting bad weather, consider rescheduling. Sometimes the skies open up without warning — if it starts raining on your movie night, make sure you’re prepared to move things inside.

Don’t let bumps in the road stop you from enjoying your time with family and friends. Be ready for any hiccups and you’re sure to be everyone’s favorite host.

Hosting the Best Outdoor Movie Night for Friends

Hanging out with friends and watching movies is a time-honored tradition. Kick back and relax in the comfort of your backyard with these tips on how to host the best outdoor movie night. All you need is the right equipment, delicious snacks and the best company to create lasting memories.

When people talk about putting on muscle, the conversation usually centers around workouts. While hitting the gym is important, it’s just half the equation. You’ll also want to eat the best food for muscle growth.

The Best Foods for Muscle Growth

Eating plenty of protein is key to gaining muscle, but how you get that protein matters, too. You’ll also need other nutrients to maximize your gains while minimizing counterproductive ingredients. Here are some of the best foods to eat for serious gains.

A plate of baked chicken, avocado and peas.
Chicken is a great source of lean protein.

Lean Meats

As you probably already know, meat is a great source of protein. Not all meat is equally beneficial, though. You specifically want to eat lean meats — that is, meat with a low fat content. A nice steak has plenty of protein but is too high in fat.

Poultry is a great option. One 100-gram portion of chicken breast has 30.5 grams of protein and just 3.17 grams of fat. Fish is another solid choice and has the added benefit of containing plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids, which help prevent muscle loss.

Tofu

You can still get all the protein you need without meat if you prefer. Tofu is another one of the best foods for muscle growth. You’ll often see it as a meat substitute, thanks to its high protein content and low fat.

Tofu’s much more than a meat alternative, though. It’s also high in calcium, which aids your muscle and bone development. This soy-based food is full of other nutrients, too, including probiotics and prebiotics, to foster a healthy gut and digest other foods better.

Eggs

Eggs are another great choice. Like meat and tofu, eggs are high in protein, but their benefits don’t stop there. Studies have found that eating whole eggs after a workout leads to greater muscle growth, increased testosterone and lower body fat percentages.

These benefits likely stem from all the vitamins, amino acids and other micronutrients eggs contain. While eating a single boiled egg or two may not fill you up, consider adding them to another meal for increased gains. Opting for eggs for a snack instead of something more sugar-rich is also a good idea.

Legumes

Legumes are great all-around foods for muscle growth, too. Beans and lentils are packed with protein and a whole host of other nutrients. These include fiber, magnesium, B vitamins and leucine — one of the amino acids crucial to building muscle mass.

Beans and other legumes are also versatile ingredients, which makes them easier to work into your diet. You could have some beans as a low-fat side, add them to vegetable dishes to up your protein content or use them as a meat alternative.

A bowl of quinoa, beans and vegetables
Quinoa is a nutrient-rich whole grain to include in your diet.

Whole Grains

Much of the best food for muscle growth is high in protein, but that’s not the only nutrient you need. Carbohydrates — more specifically, complex carbs — are also crucial, as carbs produce glucose, the main source of energy for your body. That energy helps you recover from workouts and perform better during them. Whole grains are a great source of these nutrients.

Specific grains to look for include quinoa, oats and rice. These foods offer plenty of carbs as well as fiber, which aids digestion. Stay away from bleached, sugary grain products like white bread and wheat pasta.

Starchy Vegetables

Starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes and yams are another great source of complex carbs. As an added bonus, these are gluten-free, so you can use them to get the carbs you need if you have a gluten allergy or celiac disease.

Corn, peas and lima beans are other examples of starchy carbs to work into your diet. They also go well with other great muscle-building foods like chicken and legumes, so try mixing them into your other meals.

Greek Yogurt

Most dairy products aren’t ideal for muscle growth, as they typically have a high fat content. However, Greek yogurt is different. This tasty snack is often low-fat or fat-free and has double the protein of regular yogurt.

Greek yogurt also has lots of probiotics to help you digest other nutrients. Be careful to take it easy on the sweet stuff, though. While eating yogurt with lots of honey or other sugary add-ons is undeniably delicious, too much sugar could hinder your progress.

Foods to Avoid for Muscle Growth

Now that you know the best food for muscle growth, it’s important to review what you don’t need. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need many supplements to bulk up if you eat properly. Here are some other things to minimize or avoid altogether.

Alcohol

As much as we love a good drink, alcohol isn’t great for your health. While there’s some evidence of positive health effects of some beverages like red wine, it’s best to cut out alcohol when building mass. Most of the time, it’s just empty calories.

Alcohol also has a dehydrating effect on the body, which inhibits muscle growth. You need plenty of water to aid digestion, recover from workouts and get enough oxygen to your muscles. Anything that stands in the way of that, especially without bringing any other benefits, is best to avoid.

Added Sugars

Sugary foods also don’t belong in your muscle-building diet. To be clear, your body needs glucose — a type of sugar — to get the energy for a strong workout and recovery. However, you’ll get all the glucose you need if you eat enough fruits, veggies and whole grains. Too much sugar means more empty calories.

Excess sugar can make your liver work too hard and increase fat growth. It can also promote free radical production, which counteracts the lipids and proteins you need to build muscle.

Two coffee creamers
Coffee creamer is a common source of hydrogenated oils, so it’s best to avoid.

Hydrogenated Oils

Similarly, you should minimize your oil intake when building muscle. Hydrogenated oils — which are common in baked goods, margarine, palm oil and fried foods — are high in fat, which you don’t want.

Hydrogenated oils may also cause inflammation, which will slow muscle growth by limiting recovery. Thankfully, you can cut out these foods fairly easily by not pan-frying or deep-frying things and avoiding highly processed foods.

Eat the Best Food for Muscle Growth

Once you know the best food for muscle growth, you’ll find it a lot easier to pack on some healthy pounds. Eating right is crucial to getting more out of your bulking routine.

Use this list to inspire your new, muscle-friendly diet. Pair it with the right workout regimen, plenty of water and sufficient sleep, and you’ll see gains in no time.

The fitness industry can be split into two categories — 10% of knowledgeable people who genuinely help others reach their health and wellness goals, and 90% con artists. People have lost thousands of dollars — not to mention feeling ashamed and embarrassed — by falling victim to fitness scams.

Here are seven of the most prominent fitness scams you should look out for as you browse the online fitness community.

1. Diet Fads

Diet fads are the oldest and most dangerous fitness scams known to mankind. They long predate the modern fitness industry, but they have become much more prevalent during the social media age. A great example is the paleolithic or “paleo” diet, which basically means you have to adopt a caveman’s diet from 10,000 years ago.

While it’s true that paleo, keto, vegetarian, vegan and other diets can benefit certain individuals, most people don’t need them. These diet fads are largely money-making schemes promoted by fitness influencers with no scientific evidence of their benefits. Instead of hopping on the latest dietary trends, stick to a balanced muscle-building diet with whole foods.

2. Scam Supplements

Tub of protein powder with a scooper

One of the most prevalent fitness scams in 2024 is the “supplement” trend. It seems like every fitness influencer and celebrity these days is putting out their own line of “supplements” with crappy ingredients and unknown side effects with no federal regulation. This might be a difficult pill to swallow, but a vast majority of supplements do absolutely nothing to improve your health.

Here’s a complete list of supplements you DON’T NEED:

  • BCAA’s
  • CLA
  • HMB
  • Turkesterone
  • Testosterone boosters
  • Growth hormone releasers
  • “Advanced” forms of creatine
  • L-Glutamine
  • Myostatin blockers
  • Nitric oxide boosters
  • Methoxy
  • Ecdysterone
  • Green coffee bean
  • Raspberry ketones
  • Garcinia Cambogia

Assuming you don’t have any major dietary restrictions or meticulous food preferences, you only need to be taking five supplements at most — protein powder, creatine, pre-workout, multivitamins and fish oil. Even these products are completely optional. Don’t feel pressured to take a bunch of scam supplements just because some snake oil salesman on TikTok told you to.

3. Useless Equipment

Aside from the diet-related fitness scams, the most common scam you will encounter is useless or dysfunctional workout equipment. While the equipment often looks cool, it serves no functional purpose except to sucker people into spending their hard-earned money. Here are some pieces of equipment that you should avoid:

  • Shake weight
  • Free Flexor ab machine
  • Ab circle
  • Thigh master
  • Vibrating platforms
  • Ab-toning belts
  • Shape-up shoes

4. “Get Shredded Fast” Workout Programs

If there was a quick and easy way to build muscle, it wouldn’t be a secret. All of those “get shredded fast” workout programs peddled by fitness influencers on social media are full of disinformation. They usually mislead people into buying the program through half-truths with exaggerations mixed in, but sometimes they tell boldfaced lies.

Perhaps the most notorious fitness industry scammer today is the influencer “V-Shred”. His program advertisements claim to include scientific breakthroughs that nobody else has discovered. They also claim to give users results that are impossible to achieve within the prescribed time frame. If your favorite influencer starts acting like V-Shred, it’s time to find a new fitness role model.

5. Social Media Manipulation

Have you ever noticed that fitness influencers have perfect bodies in all of their pictures on social media? Don’t let this distorted version of reality fool you. These people heavily edit all of their content to make themselves look like supermodels 24/7. Social media has manipulated people with average physiques into chasing unrealistic standards.

Runner stopping to tie his shoe
This photo is a great example of how people can manipulate their online content. This man has a great physique, but he is flexing his arms and has used filters to make his muscles look bigger. He doesn’t always look like this.

This fitness scam is more harmful than you might think. It can lead to feelings of body dysmorphia in many people because they feel inadequate. This problem is just one reason why you should take regular breaks from social media and stay grounded in reality. Stop comparing yourself to people who photoshop all of their pictures and focus on your own goals.

7. Natural vs. Unnatural

The natural vs. unnatural debate is raging in the fitness community right now. Every influencer is under a microscope as fans try to figure out if they’re taking steroids. The worst type of influencer is the guy who claims to be natural but is secretly enhanced and lies to his audience. This scam further perpetuates unrealistic body standards that hurt people’s self esteem.

Fortunately, many of these dishonest characters are being exposed. The most famous recent example is the public figure Brian Johnson or  “Liver King,” who got caught paying $11,000 a month for steroids while claiming to be natural. His physique is clearly enhanced but it took people years to realize he wasn’t natural, which is a testament to how distorted the average person’s understanding of fitness has become.

7. Uncertified Personal Trainers

Personal trainer helping her client exercise

In most cases the scammy equipment will advertise a specific benefit. For example, the aforementioned ab machines promise to “burn your belly fat” and give you a six pack in a few weeks. These claims are always BS. Stick to the equipment at your local gym or do bodyweight exercises instead.

The final scam you need to be aware of is uncertified personal trainers. The personal trainer profession has many qualified people, but most of them fly under the radar on social media because they aren’t flashy and don’t clickbait their audiences. Many famous fitness influencers claim to be personal trainers but actually have no formal training or certifications.

Nowadays, people can gain a few thousand followers on instagram posting workout videos, put “certified personal trainer” in their bio and scam people into buying their programs. Thousands of people have fallen for this exact scam. As a general rule, don’t take fitness advice from people until you learn more about their backgrounds.

Don’t Fall for Common Fitness Scams

These fitness scams are just seven of the most common occurrences. For the most part, the fitness industry is no longer about health and wellness. It has become another extension of the entertainment and beauty industries, misleading people into consuming useless and sometimes unhealthy products.

Whether you follow a strict workout routine or only lift occasionally, you’ll want to get enough protein to stay healthy and strong. Moreover, you need enough to fuel your workouts — regardless of how many you complete each week. Unfortunately, some guys only consider expensive meats like steak when choosing proteins. Use this Modded guide for 10 cheap sources of protein to strengthen your body and relieve your wallet.

1. Peanut Butter

Get a little nutty and spread peanut butter on your toast tomorrow morning. This creamy spread packs eight grams of protein into a two-tablespoon serving. It tastes terrific with smoothies, oatmeal, fruit and even vegetables like celery!

Choose natural peanut butter and avoid ones with added sugars when you can. Alternatively, you can make it at home and control the ingredients in each jar — all you need are peanuts and a food processor. Add honey or a low-calorie sweetener for a tad more flavor in this cheap protein source. Experts say peanut butter is also great for heart health, so put a spoonful on your toast or smoothie for a healthy cheat code.

2. Eggs

Some guys use breakfast for pancakes and bacon, but you can up the protein content with eggs. You may like them poached, broiled, scrambled or over easy — regardless, they’re terrific cheap forms of protein at breakfast. While egg prices fluctuate, you can consistently find a dozen at $2 or $3 or less in normal market conditions.

The Department of Agriculture says a large egg has about 6.3g of protein, so two eggs will get nearly 13g before you add anything else. If you want more protein and fewer calories, consider getting a carton of egg whites from the store. A half cup only has 63 calories while delivering 11g of protein, so add it to your plate for a great start to your morning.

3. Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is among the most versatile and cheapest protein sources, making it popular for guys working on their fitness. You can use Greek yogurt for sweet treats like smoothies, desserts and parfaits. Add the yogurt, berries and honey for a smoothie bowl, or blend it for a high-protein drink!

You can also wield Greek yogurt for savory recipes because it tenderizes meat well. For instance, use Greek yogurt to marinate chicken and create a tasty high-protein dinner. Replace your sour cream with plain Greek Yogurt and use it for tacos, chili and more. Best of all, it’s inexpensive at the grocery store.

Greek yogurt also lets you choose between non-fat and regular cartons in the refrigerated aisle. Full-fat Greek yogurt is a bulking diet as it can put you in a calorie surplus and gain the muscle you desire. Conversely, you can get non-fat yogurt and cut the calories if you have weight-loss goals.

4. Sunflower Seeds

When you think of sunflower seeds, you likely imagine carrying a bag at the baseball park. You might share the seeds with your friends and see who can launch them the farthest. Yet, sunflower seeds deserve a better reputation for their protein content. Bring a quarter cup of seeds to your next outing for about 6g of protein and nearly 4g of fiber.

Whether you buy in bulk or a small pack at the gas station, sunflower seeds are cheap, so load up for whatever meal you’re craving. While you can eat the seeds alone, sunflower seeds are terrific for salads, Asian-inspired dishes, oatmeal and more. Various flavors like barbecue and ranch make them ideal for a fantastic snack if you want inexpensive sources of protein on the road.

5. Black Beans

You can’t discuss the cheapest protein and fiber sources without mentioning black beans. The black turtle bean is a versatile food you can eat by itself or put into your soups. A can of black beans typically costs a dollar or two at your local store and contains 26g of protein for the entire thing. The price tag alone makes black beans one of the cheap forms of protein you should add to your grocery list.

Like the other foods on this list, black beans are versatile for breakfasts, dinners and desserts. Add a serving to your salads, soups, burritos, omelets and other fan favorites for a protein and fiber boost. You can even incorporate this food into your sweet treats with black bean brownies and other unorthodox desserts.

6. Sardines

Sardines might not be the most popular food, especially among the squeamish. However, these little guys are full of protein and relatively cheap. You can get a whole can and roughly 23 grams of protein for just a few bucks. Sardines are also high in calcium, vitamin D and B12, helping you take a more holistic approach to your health.

Add them to a salad, whisk a few into tomato sauce or use them to top a pizza. Some people eat sardines straight out of the can! However, don’t be afraid to experiment if you want more flavor. For instance, spicy sardine dip uses cayenne pepper and smoked paprika for a wonderful kick. Use non-fat Greek yogurt to cut the calories and make a cheap protein-packed dip.

7. Cottage Cheese

Like yogurt, cottage cheese is a low-calorie dairy product that’s cheap and high in protein. A single tub costs about $3 and can contain 50 grams of protein or more. Of course, there is such a thing as too much of a good thing. Cottage cheese contains high amounts of sodium, which can cause dehydration and inflammation, so moderation is key. Enjoy it with fruit, applesauce, granola or even toast to get your daily protein intake.

Cottage cheese can be an acquired taste, so you may have difficulty acclimating to it. If you are wary of cottage cheese, try incorporating it into other foods instead of eating it alone. For instance, mix the cottage cheese with your scrambled eggs because you can hardly taste it. Mix this cheap protein source with mashed potatoes for a creamier side dish.

8. Oats

Oats are hearty, healthy and filling. Plus, they’re super cheap and packed with protein. A one-pound container may only cost a few dollars, and each serving contains 13 grams of protein, making oats a worthwhile purchase for health nuts. Whip up a bowl of oatmeal each morning or toast some oats to use as granola for diet-conscious snacking. Like beans and yogurt, their high fiber content will also keep you fuller longer.

If you want an easy, high-protein oats recipe, try overnight oats. This dish requires no cooking, and you only have to leave it in the fridge overnight before getting a quick breakfast. Combine oats with Greek yogurt, chia seeds, peanut butter, fruit and other desired toppings.

9. Canned Tuna

Like sardines, canned tuna is one of the best inexpensive sources of protein from the ocean. Each can is practically a protein cheat code with over 42g of this muscle-building macronutrient and only 191 calories. If you’re trying to get lean and eat your gains, it’s hard to go wrong with tuna — especially considering the price. One can will cost you about a dollar, depending on your store.

Canned tuna brings flexibility when considering all the different recipes you can make. Maximize your protein with homemade tuna salad featuring canned tuna, non-fat Greek yogurt, celery, dill and other flavorful ingredients.

10. Tofu

If you’re going for a plant-based diet, tofu is one of your best cheap sources of protein because of its simplicity. You can easily find it in your grocery store for about $2 per pound, making it more affordable than your average pack of poultry or red meat. Tofu consistently has a low price tag because it comes from dried soybeans packed with protein. Just half a cup of this plant-based goodness gifts 10g of protein!

Tofu is an excellent food because of its neutral flavor. Its lack of taste means you can add sauces and toppings to make the dish your own! Tofu is prominent in Asian-inspired dishes, but you can incorporate it as a meat substitute for nearly any recipe.

Finding Cheap Sources of Protein for Big Gains

Eating healthy means packing protein and fiber, but it can drain your bank account if you’re not careful. How can you find the cheapest protein sources in the grocery store? Look for unconventional sources like sardines and sunflower seeds. These 10 options provide cheap forms of protein for your diet.
