You’re halfway up a rock face, fingers cramping, and every muscle in your body is screaming. The next hold seems just out of reach, and the frustration is building. If you’ve ever been there, you know that rock climbing is more than just about strength — it’s about technique. Mastering the proper rock climbing techniques can transform your climb from a struggle to a triumph. Learn about these strategies to help you conquer any wall with confidence and finesse.

Embrace the Basics: The Foundation of Rock Climbing Techniques

Before becoming a climbing pro, you must master the basics. These foundational rock climbing techniques will set the stage for your ascent.

Footwork: The Key to Efficiency

Proper footwork is crucial in rock climbing. Many beginners focus too much on their upper body strength, but experienced climbers know that strong, precise footwork can make all the difference. Use the following tips to improve your footwork:

Use Your Toes

Place the tips of your toes on footholds to maximize your reach and balance. This strategy gives you more control and helps distribute your weight more efficiently.

Practice Silent Feet

Aim for quiet, deliberate foot placements. This method reduces energy expenditure and increases your precision.

Master Smearing

When footholds are scarce, use the rubber of your climbing shoes to create friction against the rock face. This technique — known as smearing — can provide stability on smooth surfaces.

Body Positioning: Finding Your Balance

Efficient body positioning can make a significant difference in your climbing. Proper alignment and movement reduce the strain on your muscles and conserve energy. Keep these principles in mind:

Center of Gravity

Keep your hips close to the wall to reduce the pull on your arms. This strategy is known as “staying close to the rock.” It helps you stay balanced and makes climbing easier.

Flagging

This concept involves extending one leg away from the wall to counterbalance your body. It’s a useful rock climbing technique when reaching for a hold far from your centerline.

Twisting and Turning

Use your body’s natural movement to your advantage. Twist your hips and shoulders into the wall to reach further and create more stability.

Intermediate Rock Climbing Techniques: Stepping Up Your Game

Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s time to incorporate more advanced rock climbing techniques. These methods will help you tackle tougher routes and improve your overall performance.

Heel Hooking and Toe Hooking

Heal and toe hooking are advanced techniques that provide additional leverage and stability.

Heel Hooking

This strategy involves hooking your heel over a hold to pull yourself up. It’s particularly useful on overhangs and roofs, where upper body strength alone might not suffice.

Toe Hooking

This method uses the top of your toes to hook onto holds. It’s often employed when you need to maintain body tension and prevent swinging off the wall.

Dynos: Embracing Dynamic Movement

A dynamic move — or dyno — involves leaping from one hold to another. While it requires explosive power and precise timing, mastering dynos can help you navigate routes with spaced-out holds.

Build Momentum

Swing your body to generate momentum before leaping.

Commit Fully

Hesitation can lead to missed holds and potential falls. Commit fully to the move to increase your chances of success.

Crack Climbing: Mastering the Art of Jamming

Crack climbing involves using specific techniques to ascend fissures in the rock. It requires a unique set of skills and can be physically demanding.

Hand Jams

Insert your hand into the crack and expand it by cupping or making a fist to create a secure hold.

Foot Jams

Like hand jams, foot jams involve wedging your foot into the crack and twisting it to lock it in place.

Advanced Rock Climbing Techniques: Elevating to Expert Levels

For those who have mastered the basics and intermediate techniques, advanced rock climbing techniques will push your limits and refine your skills.

Mantling: The Top-Out Technique

Mantling is used to pull yourself up and over a ledge or the top of a climb.

Palm Down

Place your palms down on the ledge and push your body up.

High Feet

Bring your feet up high to create leverage and push off with your legs.

Advanced Footwork: Edging and Smearing

While basic footwork is crucial, advanced techniques like edging and smearing can enhance climbing efficiency.

Edging

Use the edges of your climbing shoes to stand on small holds. This strategy requires precise foot placement and balance.

Smearing

Apply more advanced smearing techniques to maximize friction on smooth surfaces, allowing for better control.

Overcoming Challenges: Common Struggles and Solutions

Rock climbing isn’t just about physical strength — it’s also a mental game. Here are some common challenges men face while climbing and how to overcome them:

Fear of Falling

Even the most seasoned climbers can experience a fear of falling. Here’s how to manage it:

Practice Falls

Familiarize yourself with falling in a controlled environment. This stategy can help reduce anxiety and build confidence.

Visualize Success

Use visualization techniques to imagine successfully completing the climb. This technique can boost your mental resilience.

Plateauing in Progress

Hitting a plateau in your climbing progress can be frustrating. Here’s how to break through:

Try Different Routes

Vary your climbing routes to challenge different muscle groups and techniques.

Set Small Goals

Break down your climbing goals into smaller, achievable milestones. This method keeps you motivated and focused.

Building Endurance

Rock climbing requires stamina and endurance. Here’s how to build it:

Cross-Training

Incorporate cardio and strength training into your routine to build overall fitness.

Rest and Recovery

Allow your body time to recover between climbs to prevent injury and maintain performance.

Gear Up: Essential Equipment for Rock Climbing

Having the right gear is crucial for rock climbing success. Here’s a quick rundown of essential equipment:

Climbing Shoes

When climbing, your feet are among your greatest tools — invest in high-quality climbing shoes that fit snugly and provide excellent grip.

Chalk and Chalk Bag

Keep your hands dry and improve your grip with chalk.

Harness and Belay Device

Ensure your safety with a reliable harness and belay device.

Climbing Rope

Choose a dynamic climbing rope that meets safety standards.

Take the Challenge

Rock climbing is a thrilling and rewarding pursuit that challenges both your body and mind. Mastering these rock climbing techniques will enable you to tackle any wall and elevate your climbing game. Remember, every climb is an opportunity to improve and push your limits. So, gear up, stay ahead of the curve and embrace the climb. The wall is yours to conquer!

Business owners and football fans are everywhere, but where are the football owners? There are only a handful of them in the United States, and they’re pretty wealthy. If you want to buy the franchise from them, you’ll have to fork up some serious dough. How much does a football team cost? Here’s a guide on how much money you’ll need to buy your favorite National Football League (NFL) teams.

How Much Does a Football Team Cost in 2024?

Buying a professional sports team requires more than your pocket change. You can’t take a few extra shifts at work and expect to bid for the Atlanta Falcons. You’ll need to win Powerball’s jackpot to be in contention.

So, how much does a football team cost? Forbes provides valuations for all 32 NFL teams based on revenue and operating income. Their experts say the average NFL team was worth over $5.1 billion entering the 2023-2024 season. Valuations have increased because of media rights deals, team sales and other revenue opportunities.

How Much Does a Football Team Cost Compared to Other Sports?

It’s hardly a secret how popular the NFL is in the 2020s. In 2023, the professional gridiron sport occupied 93 of the top 100 American broadcasts. Unsurprisingly, the most popular game in the United States helps the NFL dominate the list of franchise valuations worldwide.

When you look at the 50 most valuable teams, you’ll see 30 NFL teams occupying the rankings despite international entries. The New York Yankees, Los Angeles Lakers and Real Madrid are high on the list, but NFL squads are littered everywhere. You may like other sports more, but it’s hard to deny the NFL is king of professional leagues.

What Are the Most Expensive NFL Teams?

If your team is among the most valuable in the NFL, your ownership group is doing something right. How much does a football team cost if yours is in the top five? Here are the most-prized franchises.

5. Chicago Bears

View of the Chicago skyline during the winter

The Chicago Bears are an NFL institution because of their long history. While the Bears only have three playoff appearances since their Super Bowl XLI loss, you can’t deny the team is worth a lot of money. The fifth-ranking team had a value of about $6.3 billion entering the 2023 season, a 9% increase over the previous year.

The Bears have struggled the last few years, but are brighter days on the horizon? Last year’s draft saw Chicago gain Caleb Williams and Rome Odunze in the first nine picks. Their trajectory is slightly more positive than the next team.

4. New York Giants

If only one New York team made the top five, you had to figure it would be the Giants. The G-Men battle in one of the NFL’s toughest divisions and have storied rivalries. In fact, all four NFC East teams are in the top 10. The Giants’ 2023 valuation was $6.8 billion, gaining 13% from the previous season.

The Giants are in a tough spot for the 2024 season as the four-time Super Bowl champs look to return to their glory days. Selecting Malik Nabers could be what the offense needs to generate points, considering last season’s struggles.

3. Los Angeles Rams

The Rams have only been in Los Angeles since 2016, but they’ve risen through the ranks to take the third spot. Stan Kroenke’s Rams have a $6.9 billion value to barely eclipse their New York NFC rival in fourth place. People say Los Angeles is a basketball or baseball town, but football brought in $686 million in revenue for the Rams.

After winning Super Bowl LVI, the Rams have been in a precarious situation. Their undersized defensive tackle Aaron Donald has retired, opening a hole for their frontline. Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp aren’t getting any younger, but Puka Nacua could be the star they need.

2. New England Patriots

Tom Brady throwing a football at practice.

The glitz and glamor of New York and Los Angeles are the antithesis of the New England Patriots. However, the Foxborough franchise takes the runner-up spot for franchise valuations at $7 billion. Why are the Patriots so valuable? Their success stems from Thomas Edward Patrick Brady Jr. Without him, the Patriots haven’t been as stellar.

The Patriots are moving to a new era without Brady or former head coach Bill Belichick. Despite their high value, New England’s NFL team only saw a 9% increase in value. Only the Commanders, Packers and Chargers saw lower increases.

1. Dallas Cowboys

Roger Staubach's Super Bowl ring with the Dallas Cowboys.

The Dallas Cowboys are far and away the most valuable team in the NFL. Jerry Jones’ blue-and-white squad has a $9 billion value, which doubles the value of the bottom 10 teams. ESPN, Fox Sports and other sports media outlets focus heavily on the Cowboys because of their substantial size.

The Cowboys aren’t just the most expensive team in the NFL— Forbes says they’re the world’s most valuable pro sports franchise. The team has a long history of winning and entertainment, but its recent records don’t show championships. In fact, the Cowboys have only won four playoff games this century.

How Much Will Football Teams Cost in the Future?

The future of NFL money is bright, so don’t expect the cost of a team to go down. You’ll have a chance at NFL ownership if you strike gold, create a breakthrough invention or get lucky in the stock market. In the meantime, the NFL will continue to make more money.

The latest indication of football wealth is the salary cap increase. The NFL announced that the maximum salary for any team is $255.4 million, up $30 million from past seasons. Franchises will have more flexibility when paying their star players and finding ones from other teams.

Another reason for the rise in value is the NFL’s media rights deal. The league will garner about $110 billion through 2033, making it the most coveted ad space in marketing. There’s a reason why Super Bowl commercials are so expensive for companies to buy.

Watching Money Move on the Field

The NFL occupies your sports schedule at least three times a week in the fall and winter. Its games are must-see TV regardless of who takes the field. The league’s prestige has made it the most valuable sports association worldwide. How much does a football team cost? If you have a billionaire friend, you may have a chance at owning a team.

There’s a good chance you or someone you know plays pickleball. The sport has recently risen in popularity as people want to get fit and have fun. Why has it become so popular? First, it’s critical to understand the history of pickleball. Here’s a rundown of this half-century-old sport and its outlook for the future.

What Is the History of Pickleball

Learning the history of pickleball requires a trip to Washington’s Puget Sound. The Pacific Northwest is an excellent summer destination if you want to escape the blistering heat of the desert. However, some days bring boredom, as one family found.

Joel Pritchard and Bill Bell were looking for something to do on a weekend in 1965, so they gathered their families for badminton. They couldn’t locate the shuttlecocks typically used for the game, so they had to improvise with unorthodox choices. Can you play badminton with a tennis ball?

The families tried to play badminton with a Wiffle ball, a ping-pong paddle and other sports equipment. However, none of their options compared to the old Cosom Fun Ball. This toy was a step up from Wiffle balls and helped establish the history of pickleball.

Making It Official

After a few years, Pritchard and his cohorts decided to create an official sport by founding Pickle Ball, Inc. By 1972, the team filed trademarks for pickleball and sold paddles to people interested in the sport. While young people play pickleball, adults can enjoy the slow pace and have fun on the court.

Pickleball slowly rose in the Pacific Northwest as people played in backyards and organized community leagues. By 1976, the sport was ready for its first official tournament. Pritchard chose Tukwila, Washington, to host the first pickleball championship.

As the game spread nationwide, the ’80s and ’90s saw more growth opportunities for pickleball. For example, the Arizona Senior Olympics promoted the sport and encouraged older adults to participate. This demonstration proved pickleball wasn’t just a young person’s game.

Awaiting the Pickleball Boom

The sport saw a slow rise for the rest of the 20th century. When did it see its most considerable boost? The modern history of pickleball starts around the COVID-19 pandemic. People had to stay inside or do physical activities with limited social interaction. Fortunately, pickleball came to the rescue.

Pickleball is easy to set up in your backyard or a local park. Paddles, balls and a net are the only required gear to start a friendly game. The simple setup meant people could play with their household members without worrying about bumping into strangers.

The first two years of the pandemic saw incredible growth for Pickleball, surging 40% between 2020 and 2022 due to nationwide restrictions. How much did it grow from 2016 to 2022? Experts say pickleball participation increased by 650%.

Turning Pro

Local tournaments are fun, but how do you stack up against the best players from other states? One way to find out is to establish a professional league. The first league originated in 1984 when organizers founded the United States Amateur Pickleball Association (USAPA).

Pickleball’s most prominent association is the Professional Pickleball Association (PPA), home of the sport’s top competitors like Ben Johns. The world’s best pickleball player focuses on weight training, dynamic movements and cardio to prepare his body for competition.

While the PPA doesn’t have lucrative media rights deals, pickleball has entered the mainstream by having TV slots. You can catch matches on ESPN, YouTube, PickleballTV and other streaming platforms to watch the week’s tournaments. The sport’s rise will only grow its visibility and viewership.

How Popular Is Pickleball in 2024?

Person holding a pickleball paddle and ball on the court.

The pandemic has wound down, but pickleball has continued its rise in the sports world. People worldwide are building new courts and picking up paddles for the first time to join the fun. How many people are playing in 2024? Research shows the game is here to stay.

The Association of Pickleball Professionals says 48 million American adults have played pickleball in the last 12 months. This number reflects a 35% rise since August 2022, when the researchers found 36 million adults played the sport.

A consistent rise could mean pickleball becoming more prominent in the community and sports. For example, high schools could start pickleball teams and compete in state-sanctioned tournaments. Could the sport rise to the level of amateur tennis?

Olympic Considerations

Bridge during the night in Brisbane, Australia

The history of pickleball could become more storied if you see it at the Olympics. Advocates of the sport tried to earn a competition in the 2024 and 2028 games but fell short. What does this mean for the future? Hope isn’t lost, so a 2032 bid in Brisbane, Australia, could be the answer.

How can a sport become a part of the Olympics? The Olympic Charter says you need male participation in 75 countries and four continents or 40 countries and three continents for women. While it has international appeal, pickleball isn’t quite there.

The World Pickleball Federation (WPF) says 60 countries on six continents play the sport, falling short of the 75-nation threshold. Most member nations are from Asia and Europe, so more work is necessary to gain momentum worldwide.

Are There Health Benefits to Pickleball?

Person holds a pickleball paddle and ball while approaching the court.

Pickleball has seen an incredible rise because it’s easy to play. Due to its accessibility, you may see co-workers, family members and neighbors on the local courts. One positive attribute of pickleball is the physical health boosts. Any excuse to move your body is good for your fitness.

Each match requires running around the court, thus increasing your heart rate and physical activity levels. Experts say pickleball improves heart and lung health because you breathe hard and burn calories. Pair the sport with a healthy diet to aid your weight management tactics.

Another crucial benefit of pickleball is improved coordination. You need solid balance to remain on the court without falling, so the sport teaches your body to monitor itself. Great pickleball players know how to play in the kitchen without committing a violation.

Helping Seniors Get Fit

Staying in shape becomes more difficult as you age. Your body slows down, so finding physical activity is crucial. Pickleball is a terrific sport for older adults because it requires movement but is mostly safe. You may see seniors play in their backyard or at a local YMCA.

One significant benefit of pickleball is its flexibility. You can play the sport inside or outdoors, allowing older adults to stay cool during hot temperatures. Seniors are more vulnerable during heat waves, so letting them play in air-conditioned rooms is advantageous.

Pickleball became popular during the pandemic because you could play it with close friends or family. However, the game has evolved to be fun with strangers and new company. If you see people playing in the park, ask if they want to start a doubles game for friendly competition.

Embracing the History of Pickleball and the Sport’s Future

Basketball, baseball, football and hockey are America’s four biggest sports. Could pickleball be the fifth game to captivate TV sets nationwide? The history of pickleball dates back to 1965, but its meteoric rise has come recently. The game’s accessibility makes it easy for anybody to pick up a paddle and play.

The WNBA is finally getting the credit it deserves after nearly 30 years of professional basketball. What has launched this professional league into the mainstream? You can thank a 22-year-old girl from Des Moines, Iowa. The Caitlin Clark effect has overtaken the W and changed the league. Here’s what you need to know about modern women’s basketball in 2024 and beyond.

What Is the Caitlin Clark Effect?

If you’re a sports fan, you probably know who Caitlin Clark is by now. She spent four years at the University of Iowa and became a nationwide sensation due to her incredible play. Her four years as a Hawkeye drew comparisons to Pete Maravich due to her elite ability to pass and score. While her junior and senior seasons took the country by storm, Clark was a five-star recruit coming out of high school. Still, you couldn’t have predicted her effect on the game.

While Clark is an excellent player, other greats who have played before her are worth noting. Candace Parker, Sheryl Swoopes, Maya Moore and Cynthia Cooper deserve their flowers. However, the older players didn’t have the visibility that Clark and other modern players enjoy. Social media and increased TV coverage have brought more eyeballs to college and professional women’s basketball. Now, you can see the leagues in full bloom.

What Effect Does Caitlin Clark Have on Basketball?

Caitlin Clark has become larger than basketball because of her effect on the sport and media coverage. How much does one player impact the league? Here are a few ramifications you can see on and off the court.

College Ratings Records

Discussing Clark’s greatness requires going back to college. She came onto the scene during the 2023 NCAA Division I women’s basketball tournament. Clark set records in March Madness with back-to-back 40-point games and multiple triple-doubles. However, her stardom rose in the Final Four, as Clark scored 41 points and led her Hawkeyes over undefeated South Carolina. While Iowa lost to LSU, Clark’s stardom only rose higher.

The 2024 tournament saw South Carolina, Iowa and LSU making deep runs again. This time, the Hawkeyes got revenge over the LSU Tigers in a thrilling 94-87 victory. The rematch earned an average of 12.3 million viewers, as the nation wanted to see Clark and Angel Reese. The championship match against South Carolina shattered the previous record by averaging nearly 19 million viewers. More people watched the women’s championship game than the men’s final.

Rapid WNBA Ratings Rise

While she was a college sensation, Clark wasn’t done before hitting the pros. She was the consensus No. 1 pick in the 2024 Draft, even though great talent sat behind her. The Indiana Fever lost 27 games in 2023 and earned the right to draft the Iowa native. Clark has struggled in some of her early games, but the TV audiences have shown up for her games. While people want to see Clark, they show love to the other WNBA teams by increasing their ratings.

The WNBA’s viewership has skyrocketed since the season started in mid-May. Since the first tip-off, the league has seen tripled viewership compared to the 2023 season. Each game gets about 1.3 million viewers despite just a 462,000 average a year ago. While the league has become more talented, it’s hard to attribute it to anything but the Caitlin Clark effect. Her battles with Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky have become must-see TV for basketball fans.

Increased WNBA Attendance

Higher ratings are excellent for the league and advertisers. However, players benefit from sellout crowds and engaged fans coming to their games. Nobody wants to play in front of empty stands where all you can hear is players yelling and shoes squeaking. Fans drive excitement in any sport and are more engaged with women’s basketball. The W says it has sold out more than half the games on the schedule, with over 400,000 people showing up for its exhibitions.

What does higher attendance mean for the league? Fans are buying jerseys and other merchandise to support their teams. Despite all three entering their rookie season, Clark, Reese and Cameron Brink are among the most popular jerseys in the WNBA. Clark’s Indiana Fever kit is the most popular jersey for a rookie in Fanatics history. Consider the magnitude of this statistic, considering former No. 1 picks like Trevor Lawrence.

How Is the WNBA Responding to the Caitlin Clark Effect?

The WNBA isn’t blind to Clark’s celebrity. How has the league responded to her meteoric rise and effect on women’s basketball? Here are a few significant impacts this season.

Charter Flights

Private jet on the runway during sunset

The WNBA has received criticism for making players take commercial flights. The decision may have made sense for operating costs and because the league wasn’t popular enough to cause a stir at airports. However, the WNBA’s recent rise in popularity has forced the league to change its travel rules. Before the rule change, players like Breanna Stewart and Nneka Ogwumike called on the league to let teams use chartered flights.

Now, the 12 teams are getting their wishes. The Caitlin Clark effect immediately led to charted flights after a preseason incident in Dallas. Clark and her Fever teammates arrived at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport only to see crowds waiting on them. The proximity to players necessitates more privacy and security for their safety. Therefore, the WNBA announced a partnership with Delta to give each team charter flights in 2024.

Moving Facilities

Full basketball arena awaiting a game

WNBA teams have played in smaller arenas for nearly 30 years because of lacking attendance. Basketball facilities generally have less seating capacity than your average football stadium because of the court’s size. A 75,000-seat arena doesn’t make sense when your playing surface is barely 31 feet long. That said, the arrival of Caitlin Clark has forced the WNBA to move its games to different facilities. Will more money lead to arena renovations in the future?

Some teams have moved their games against the Indiana Fever to accommodate higher demand. For instance, the Washington Mystics typically play home games at Entertainment and Sports Arena. This complex is too small for the anticipated attendance, so the Mystics moved their game to the larger Capital One Arena. Fitting people inside a 20,000-seat arena is more manageable than one with only 4,000 chairs to sit.

The Rookie Treatment

While Caitlin Clark has helped women’s basketball, her effect hasn’t given her special treatment on the court. The other players have shown her little mercy by shoving her or throwing elbows to rough her up. While she has faced veteran players, her incidents with fellow rookie Reese have made headlines due to hard fouls and post-game comments. Clark has taken the fouls in stride and understood they’re a part of the game.

Rookies receive harsh treatment in every sport. You can’t expect to enter a league and dominate from the get-go. The Detroit Pistons forced Michael Jordan to play by the Jordan rules, including hard fouls and rough play if he drove the lane for a lay-up. Some players talk trash and throw elbows to see what first-year players are made of, and Clark is no exception. She’ll improve her game and earn respect over time.

Watching the Rise of Women’s Basketball

The WNBA has had plenty of talent since its 1996 incorporation. Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lobo and Dawn Staley were the sport’s earliest stars and deserved more recognition for their skills. Now, the W is finally getting the TV and arena audiences it deserves, and the Caitlin Clark effect receives much of the credit. The Iowa native has brought eyeballs to the sport and will only help the future as she plays more games.

Trying to build muscle can be challenging. While going to the gym and lifting heavy weights can be the traditional strategy, it’s not the right fit for everyone. Sometimes, we’re looking for something more involved and engaging to help us build muscle while doing something fun. Finding a sport to play can be the perfect way to help you build muscle while doing something you enjoy. Here are some of the best sports for building muscle.

1. Boxing – Best for Upper Body and Core Strength

Boxing is known for being a violent and competitive sport. It’s also one of the best muscular strength sports. People forget that simple pad work or shadow boxing is a form of boxing that engages your core unlike any other sport. You can tone your arms, build up your endurance and practice great cardio with weekly boxing sessions. You could join a nearby boxing gym or get your punching bag to use at home.

ProsCons
+ A full-body workout - High possibility of muscle strain
+ Improves self-confidence and self-discipline - Requires a trainer
+ A form of self-defense

2. Gymnastics – Best for Strength Training and Flexibility Work

One sport that is often overlooked for building muscle is gymnastics. If you’ve ever been to a competition or seen Olympic gymnasts, you know just how strong, coordinated and agile gymnasts need to be. Many events involve holding up your body weight and staying in positions integral to building muscle. It’s also an excellent sport for those who aren’t looking to invest too much money in equipment — you’ll likely be able to find a local gym where you can exercise.

ProsCons
+ Helps improve bone density - High injury risk
+ Improves self-confidence and self-discipline

3. Swimming – Best for Weight Loss

Swimmer doing a butterfly stroke

This sport is one of the low-impact sports for muscular strength, making it great for those recovering from injuries or those who are elderly. It works nearly every body part to help you develop muscle and build strength. Swimming is easy to start, too — hardly any equipment is needed. Just find a pool or another swimming area and start doing laps. You’ll be surprised how good of a workout it is.

Several swimming workouts can help you build muscle. For instance, you can do jump squats to build leg muscles. Get into the pool, put your weight on your heels and squat until your shoulders are underwater. Perform 20 reps per set before swimming.

ProsCons
+ Provides a full-body workout - Requires pool access
+ Improves cardiovascular strength - High risk of shoulder injuries without proper training

4. Bouldering – Best for Endurance Work and Mental Focus

One of the main reasons people don’t lift weights is because they find it too boring — some people may need something more mentally stimulating than simply lifting something heavy. If this sounds like you, you may be looking for an activity that allows you to be strategic and forces you to use your brain while also being active.

Bouldering is a muscular strength sport that engages you mentally and physically. It’s a form or rock climbing that can be done indoors on artificial rock walls or outside on actual cliffs. It’s climbing a piece of rock that requires intense but shorter moves than traditional rock climbing.

Spend 10 minutes climbing and you can engage your arms, core and back all at once. However, you’ll also try to pick out the best way forward, finding various handholds and footholds and thinking about traversing different areas.

ProsCons
+ Builds upper body and grip strength - High risk of hand and elbow injuries
+ Helps improve mental focus - Needs access to outdoor boulders
+ Helps improve core stability

5. Rowing – Best for Achieving a Lean Physique

Rowing machines are extremely common nowadays, and for good reason — they’re one of the best exercises to build muscle. But you don’t have to spend all of your time on a machine — with a kayak, you can spend real time out on the water, enjoying the scenery, getting some fresh air and building muscle at the same time.

It’s one of the sports that build muscle for your upper body, making it ideal for improving your core and amping up your shoulder muscles.

ProsCons
+ Builds back, arms, shoulders and leg muscles - Potential for back injuries
+ Helps improve heart health - Needs access to rowing machine

6. Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) – Best for Muscular Endurance

Two men practicing mixed martial arts

MMA has become increasingly popular in recent years. Many people are now realizing just how good of a workout it is. It’s more than just a great workout, though — MMA involves a lot of strategy and technique to beat your opponent. If you’re looking for a muscular strength sport that will push you to your limits, then MMA could be the sport for you.

ProsCons
+ Teaches self-defense skills - Requires proper supervision
+ Improves overall fitness - Risk of various body injuries during sparring

7. CrossFit – Best for Functional Strength

CrossFit has gained popularity in the past years because it combines elements of weightlifting, cardio and gymnastics. Daily workouts use a mix of barbell and kettlebell movements, plyometrics, strongman, calisthenics and machine conditioning. These workouts, also known as workouts of the day or WODs, are implemented to push individuals out of their comfort zones.

Although CrossFit started as a fitness program, it is now considered a sport. Individuals compete against each other and more competitions are being held worldwide. However, CrossFit still typically requires trainers and gym memberships to participate. Monthly memberships can cost around $186 per month, with higher prices in metropolitan areas.

ProsCons
+ Provides a variety of exercises - Not ideal if muscle building is a priority
+ Presents new and fun challenges daily - Monthly membership costs
+ More accessible for all ages and skill levels

8. Weightlifting – Best for Overall Muscle Mass

Just like its name suggests, it refers to the actual activity of lifting weights. It’s a form of exercise in which your muscles contract against an external resistance, boosting your body’s tone, mass, strength and endurance. Weightlifting is the most popular sport that builds muscle with the right dedication.

Different types will allow you to build athletic muscle:

  • Bodybuilding: This is the most popular sport. It involves working out specific muscle groups to boost muscle aesthetics and size.
  • Powerlifting: Its primary focus is strength, and it includes three lifts: squat, deadlift, and bench press. Powerlifters often look out of shape and much stronger than bodybuilders because they can push more weight.
  • Circuit training: In this method, you must perform weightlifting exercises one after the other with minimal rest to enhance cardiovascular fitness and various muscle groups.
  • Olympic lifting: It’s characterized by two iconic lifts: the clean and jerk and snatch. This sport is a test of strength, flexibility, coordination and speed.
ProsCons
+ Ideal for individuals whose primary goal is to build muscle mass - High risk of injuries, tearing muscles or overtraining without proper form
+ Can boost body composition, aesthetics and metabolism - Can set unrealistic expectations
+ Improves strength and bone density - Imbalanced muscle development

9. Rock Climbing – Best for Upper Body and Grip Strength

A man in a rock climbing gym

Rock climbing requires you to use multiple muscle groups simultaneously, making it one of the most excellent sports for muscular strength. Engage in intense climbing training and expect to lose body fat and gain muscle mass. While climbers aren’t seen with bulky and excessive muscles like weightlifters do, many athletes have toned and lean bodies. This muscular strength sport may be ideal if you want an all-around sport that doesn’t require you to bulk up.

ProsCons
+ Improves upper body strength - Potential falls and finger injuries without proper safety gear
+ Offers physical and mental challenges
+ Boosts your grip strength and core stability

What’s the Best Sport for Building Muscle?

All the sports on the list are great options for building muscle. Much of it will depend on what sports you enjoy — you may want to try a couple of sessions to see which will fit you. Then, once you find the right muscle-building sport, you can dive in and start bulking up while doing something you enjoy.

The developer says Forza Motorsport 2023 will include new features like ray tracing and more realistic tire wear. Dynamic time-of-day changes are a neat feature we haven’t seen in other racing games. Some races are long enough to start in daylight and end under the stars, but the video game doesn’t reflect the time elapsed. Now, we’re getting better features.

Most sports video games are based on real leagues, but they transport you to fantasy worlds where you control the athletes. Imagine winning the NBA Finals, the World Cup and the Super Bowl without leaving your living room. Thanks to the upcoming sports games, you can have these dreams as long as you want. What sports video games are upcoming on the calendar? Here are the # we can’t wait to play.

6 Sports Games Coming Out Soon

2024 will be an excellent year for sports video games. Some titles will return after long absences, whereas other fan favorites will again hit the shelves. These six upcoming sports video games should be on your wishlist.

1. EA Sports College Football 25

A crowded football stadium

The wait is almost over. EA Sports College Football 25 will give players the first university gridiron game since 2013. The video game will debut on July 19, bringing back the fan-favorite game modes.

Dynasty lets you take the reins of any school, recruit elite athletes and win championships. Road to Glory returns as you enroll in college and try to win the Heisman Trophy. Will you take over Tennessee to build on the legacy of Peyton Manning, or will you carve a new path at a smaller school? Make the confetti rain on Akron as you win the College Football Playoff National Championship.

The college title is one of the most hyped new sports games coming out in 2024 because of the decade-long wait. What will be new in this game? You can build your squad through Ultimate Team, a game mode famous in Madden NFL titles. Fill your roster with old and new players to make your school stand out. Imagine Vince Young handing the ball to Reggie Bush as Calvin Johnson blocks on the side.

2. Skate

an overturned skateboard

Skate joins the list of upcoming sports games fans are clamoring for because of a long hiatus. EA released the most recent title — Skate 3 — in 2010 after a few popular games starting in 2007. The original titles were only available on consoles, but the upcoming version will be available on Steam. A February announcement confirmed the game will be on PC when it debuts.

So, when will EA release the new Skate game? The official launch date is uncertain, but Skate has said on social media that console testing will come later this year. PC gamers got an exclusive playtest of Skate in February and March. Unfortunately, information from these sessions is not public knowledge due to non-disclosure agreements (NDA). If you’re waiting for Skate, expect the game to debut later this year or early 2025.

3. Undisputed

A training boxed

If you want to box, there aren’t many video game options outside Wii Sports. Even then, a few rounds with Matt make you want to turn the console off and do something else. If you want boxing with a modern title, Undisputed gives you the ultimate fight night in one of the best new sports games coming out in 2024.

Boxing is one of the fiercest one-on-one sports, and you get to immerse yourself in the competition. News about Undisputed gives fans the first boxing game in a decade, as you’ll fight with Roy Jones Jr., Tyson Fury and other stars. Like other sports video games, the upcoming title lets you create a boxer and manage your career as you fight to the top. Will you be a cruiserweight, heavyweight or middleweight? The extensive customization gives you the power to choose.
Undisputed aims to give players incredible detail in each fight, with 60 different punches, footwork maneuvers and defensive strategies to win each match. You’ll start your career in small gyms before headlining pay-per-view matches in Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden.

4. F1 Manager 2024

an F1 race car circling a track

F1 Manager is back with another installment this July as you get behind the pit box of Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes and the other elite teams. This Frontier Developments game differs from the typical F1 games because you’re not steering the car. Instead, you develop a race strategy and find the best path to victory lane. When will you stop for fuel and change your racing tires? These decisions are crucial for getting on the podium and earning championships.

F1 Manager 2024 is one of the most anticipated new sports games coming out because of its latest features. The 2024 edition lets you create a team for the first time in the game’s history. You’ll set up the uniforms, car design and logo to make your machine the best-looking one on the track. Additionally, you’ll negotiate with sponsors to ensure your team’s funding and status within F1.

The new game leans into improved AI as you have to be on your toes against competitors. Your rivals will try to steal drivers and staff from your team, so keeping their morale and wallets happy is integral. However, you can only afford to pay your engineers so much money. How will you balance the personalities around the pit box?

5. Madden NFL 25

Qualcomm Football Stadium

As long as the NFL exists, you can nearly guarantee there will be a video game before the season begins. Madden NFL is one of the most popular sports video games, and the upcoming title will likely build on previous successes. Last year, Madden NFL 24 set a single-week record for digital units sold as the series grows. What’s new for this year’s edition?

The exciting rookie class is among the most anticipated additions. Caleb Williams is the new quarterback for the Chicago Bears, and he’ll compete with D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze and other young stars. The next Madden NFL video game will also give you a first look at Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr.

Madden NFL games are fundamentally the same title each year. However, the 2025 edition will look different with the gameplay. This August’s release will see a re-engineered physics system and enhanced FieldSENSE to make it feel even smoother. Scoring touchdowns with Travis Kelce will feel even more satisfying with better graphics and natural gameplay.

6. NBA 2k25

street art of Michael Jordan

Another staple in sports video games coming out in the fall includes NBA 2k25. The basketball title has hit the shelves annually since 1999 and is among the most popular sports titles. What should you expect from the next release?

The anticipated release date will likely be September 2024, after Labor Day weekend. One of the biggest questions surrounding each year’s 2k game is the cover athlete. Last year had a special edition with Kobe Bryant and Sabrina Ionescu, so who will grace the next cover? The game typically selects players who have yet to be the cover athlete. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jayson Tatum and Anthony Edwards could be leading contenders. Don’t forget about the three-time MVP Nikola Jokić.

The next edition of 2k25 should return many prominent game modes players love. Expect to see MyCAREER and MyTEAM as you lead squads to the NBA Finals. The 2024 Summer Olympics means 2k players should anticipate the men’s and women’s national teams to be available for play. Savor the men’s squad because it might be LeBron James’ last time playing in the Summer Olympics.

Sports Video Games Making Their Mark This Year

The first half of 2024 has already seen some fun sports video games debut. Have you played any of these titles yet? Some great games include:

  • MLB The Show 24
  • WWE 2k24
  • BMX Streets
  • TopSpin 2k25
  • Rugby 24
  • Star Racer
  • Turbo Golf Racing

Waiting for the Upcoming Sports Video Games

Sports video games are unique because they let you participate in competitive leagues. What titles are you looking forward to playing this year? EA Sports College Football 25 has stolen headlines lately, but the other games will be just as fun.

Boasting stunning graphics and realistic gameplay, the best soccer games provide an immersive experience that will make you feel like you’re on the field with your favorite team.

All games on this list have satisfied millions of fans worldwide who, at one time or another, have hopped on their PlayStation consoles to play soccer. Whether you agree or disagree with this ranking, the important thing is that it sparks plenty of fond memories. Let the arguments begin.

Best Soccer Games Ranked: Methodology

Soccer, or football as it’s more commonly known, is the world’s most popular sport, engaging over 4 billion fans across the globe. Naturally, establishing a consistent and credible ranking methodology will be challenging. Everyone probably has one or two games they’ll swear were the best ever and might be expecting them to rank higher.

That’s why in ranking the best football video games on the PS console, this list simply aggregates the top-rated games across multiple review sites. Using this approach can provide a more objective look at how each entry stacks against the other. It also allows you to appreciate the changes over the years — from gameplay and graphics to innovation.

However, it’s important to note that while ranking the best soccer games offers a solid foundation for comparison, each entry’s true essence and impact go beyond numbers. The cultural footprints left by each game and their overall contribution to the global football community also bear weight.

1. FIFA 14

FIFA’s access to official licensing means it is unrivaled in terms of authenticity in football gaming. But that’s just one of many aspects of FIFA 14 that make it the best soccer game ever played on a PS console. Released in September 2013 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and Vita, the game had all the right features to deliver a truly enjoyable experience.

To be clear, FIFA 14 doesn’t really have a big marquee feature. Instead, it consolidates all the innovations from previous installments along with small yet hugely impactful changes. Most notable is the more natural way players move and interact with each other and the ball. The shift in body weight when they suddenly change direction adds a more realistic sense of momentum as they build up speed. Improved player movement also resulted in better dribbling, making runs feel more thrilling and goals scored more gratifying.

2. FIFA 12

The introduction of tactical defending and precision dribbling are the standout features of FIFA 12. While doing a slide tackle in previous games was your go-to for regaining possession, defending on FIFA 12 is more nuanced and follows a more authentic gameplay. Unnecessarily sliding toward an opponent will leave your player in the wake of a speedy winger or striker as he sprints at your goalkeeper.

Precision dribbling introduced more flair to your gaming experience. Tapping the L1 button while moving with the ball at your player’s feet gave you that extra burst of finesse past a defender. Oh, what fun times were there with this function, especially with naturally gifted dribblers like Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho?

3. Pro Evolution Soccer 2013

PES 2013 will likely make it onto any football lover’s best soccer games of all time. Cristiano Ronaldo deservedly graced the cover following his scintillating form at Real Madrid and budding professional rivalry with Lionel Messi.

What makes PES 2013 truly stand out is the amazing on-field gameplay. Passing was smooth, player positioning resembled real-life settings and even the player reactions were superbly genuine. Overall, the immersive gaming experience kept the controller glued to your hands for hours.

4. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (2006)

Featuring the best Premier League defender, John Terry, on the cover, PES 6 was a truly defining installment in the entire franchise. It was one of those “you had to play it to really experience it” games that further widened the gap in the FIFA or PES debate.

PES 6 was one of the best games of the PS 2 era, bringing all the greatest football stars to life on your screen. The intricately designed gameplay boasted advanced tactics and high-intensity moments that football lovers worldwide came to expect in subsequent releases.

5. ISS Pro Evolution

Before PES, there was International Superstar Soccer, which you’ll remember fondly if you owned a PS1 back in the day. ISS Pro Evolution was the 1999 installment of the beloved franchise, introducing a new level of depth and realism to the game. One of the game’s most exciting features was the introduction of the Master League mode, which allowed gamers to build their teams, negotiate player transfers and compete in a conventional football season.

6. FIFA 21

FIFA 21 Game Screen on PS4

As the Covid-19 pandemic halted footballing worldwide, avid gamers kept playing. FIFA 21 improved the somewhat lackluster gameplay of its predecessor with a number of small changes that enhanced the overall gaming experience. On-field passes and crosses flowed smoother and play movements on the ball were noticeably more lifelike.

One of the best features was the realistic speed mirroring of in-game players compared to their real-life counterparts. For instance, when using speedsters like Kylian Mbappe and Leroy Sane, you would actually leave bedraggled defenders behind after dribbling past them.

7. EA Sports FC 24

After selling more than 325 million copies over the past three decades, EA Sports and FIFA announced the decision to split after the publisher balked at paying a premium to obtain the famous FIFA branding. As a result, gamers expecting a FIFA 24 soccer game got EA FC 24 instead. The gameplay doesn’t sway much from its predecessors and is, in fact more enjoyable than the previous installments.

Worthy Inclusions

  • FIFA 2010 (PlayStation 2 and 3)
  • FIFA 2018 (PlayStation 3 and 4)
  • PES 2008 (PlayStation 2, 3 and Portable)
  • PES 2017 (PlayStation 3 and 4)
  • FIFA 2016 (PlayStation 3 and 4)
  • PES 2020 (PlayStation 4)
  • Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions (PlayStation 4)
  • FIFA Street 3 (Playstation 3)

The Best Soccer Games On PlayStation

Over the years, PS console gamers have been treated to a vast selection of soccer games and it’s almost impossible to say which one truly deserves top spot. However, this list does sufficient justice and hopefully inspires you to pick up the pad once more for a scintillating soccer match or two.

June is the most critical time of the year for professional basketball as fans gather to watch the NBA Finals. The playoffs are well underway, but plenty of games remain before the championship round arrives. Who will make and win the NBA Finals? Some teams have what it takes, whereas others will fall by the wayside. Here’s what you should expect for the rest of the NBA Playoffs.

The Road to the NBA Finals

The NBA Playoffs started with the veterans showing their skills, although some fell flat early. Steph Curry, Kevin Durant and LeBron James all went home early, with only the Los Angeles Lakers winning a single game. All three are among the best NBA players, but is the next generation taking over?

This year’s playoffs are another reminder the guard is changing in the NBA as younger superstars are taking over. Here are a few emerging superstars from round one:

  • Anthony Edwards: Ant-Man is young but he’s emerged as the face of the Timberwolves. He averaged 31 points against the Phoenix Suns and posted 40 points in the close-out game.
  • Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: At just 25 years old, SGA is the undisputed leader of the top-seeded Thunder. He averaged an excellent 27 points while sweeping the Pelicans.
  • Jalen Brunson: The injury-riddled Knicks play through Jalen Brunson, who averaged 34 points against the Sixers. The New Jersey native has shown no fear despite fierce competition.

Predicting the Second Round

The competition gets tougher in each round, so the stars must show poise and composure in each game. What will happen in the second round? Here are the expectations for the quarterfinals.

Celtics Defeat the Cavaliers

The Celtics will likely be without Kristaps Porzingis for this round, so will the Cavaliers get a boost? No, because the Celtics are immensely talented despite losing their Latvian star. While the Cavs will make some noise, the Celtics will win in five games.

Pacers Defeat the Knicks

The Indiana Pacers took down an injury-plagued Milwaukee Bucks and will do the same against the Knicks. Indiana will turn each game into a track meet and ultimately win the series in six games.

Nuggets Defeat the Timberwolves

This series will be one for the ages, with the defending champions facing the up-and-coming Minnesota Timberwolves. Will Edwards and Co. have enough to take down Nikola Jokić? This series will be close, but the Nuggets will win in seven games.

Thunder Defeat the Mavericks

Oklahoma City is the youngest team in the NBA, with an average age of 24.1 years old. How much will that matter against Dallas? The Mavericks have a legitimate shot because of Luka and Kyrie’s playoff experience, but the Thunder will prevail in six games.

Conference Finals Conjecture

The final four teams will be the Celtics, Pacers, Nuggets and Thunder. Will the East see an upset or will the young guns win the West? Here’s the semifinal preview.

Celtics Defeat the Pacers

The Pacers may have the best offense in the NBA, but it will come to a grinding halt against the Celtics. Conversely, Tatum will put on a show and launch his team to the Finals. This series will be over in a gentleman’s sweep.

Nuggets Defeat the Thunder

The Thunder are ready for the spotlight but are a year or two away from true success. Jokić and the Nuggets have too much experience and will take full advantage of Oklahoma City. Expect Denver to win in six games.

What Will Happen in the NBA Finals?

Expect an outstanding series if the Celtics and Nuggets meet in the NBA Finals. Here are the five most important factors for a Boston vs. Denver championship round.

Big Man Battles

Jokić is the best basketball player in the world right now, but the Celtics have a big man of their own. How will the big men battle in the paint? Porzingis and Horford may give the Joker some fits, but the MVP from Serbia will prevail. You can’t stop him from getting his numbers, so you must stop the other guys.

Perimeter Warfare

This NBA Finals matchup will come down to the Celtics’ ability to guard the perimeter. The Celtics had five top-40 players in defensive win shares during the regular season, and Jokić was the only Nugget in the top 40.

Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown have to lock down Jamal Murray and Michael Porter Jr. or else they’ll lose. White is among the best three-and-D players in the NBA, so the Celtics need his poise to win.

Injury Reports

One important factor in the Finals won’t be as much in the teams’ control. Porzingis and Murray have dealt with injuries during the playoffs, and their presence will significantly affect this year’s outcome.

Denver’s point guard only played in 59 games this season due to lower-body injuries and nearly missed games against the Los Angeles Lakers. Porzingis only played in 57 games due to regular season and playoff injuries against the Miami Heat. Both players are dealing with calf injuries that will determine their playoff fates.

Clutch Baskets

The NBA Finals is the most pressure you’ll face in your NBA career. Your performance in the final few minutes of games will affect who hoists the Larry O’Brien Trophy. How do the Celtics and Nuggets stack up in the clutch? Advanced metrics say the Nuggets have the best net rating in the clutch, while the Celtics rank fourth in the league.

Jokić and Murray are two of the most clutch players in the league, with the latter making huge shots against the Lakers in the first round. Who takes the last shot for the Celtics? While Tatum is the team leader, don’t count out guys like White or Holiday.

New Year, Different Rosters

Each team carries over a reputation from past seasons. The Celtics have been close to the mountaintop since 2017 but can’t get over the hump, whereas the Nuggets are the reigning champions. Will the teams stay consistent in the Finals?

These Celtics aren’t the same squads from past years. Porzingis and Holiday are the new additions and Head Coach Joe Mazzulla has unleashed the team’s offensive potential. One thing to remember about the Nuggets is they lost Jeff Green and Bruce Brown — two clutch performers in last year’s Finals — to free agency. Thus, their bench production has become a liability.

Declaring a Winner

The Boston Celtics will win the NBA championship in six games. This team is ready for the spotlight and will be on top if Porzingis is healthy. While the Nuggets are great, they’re not as stellar as last season. Additionally, Murray’s injury status is too much of a liability.

April 15, 2024, could go down in history as the day that forever changed the WNBA and women’s basketball. The league has been on a roll in recent years, recording historic revenue, attendance and viewership figures. Judging by the depth and unprecedented public interest in the latest crop of prospects, the 2024 WNBA Draft may mark the turning point in the 28-year-old American women’s professional basketball league’s national popularity and profitability.

Who Gets First Pick in the WNBA Draft 2024?

The Indiana Fever owns the top pick in this year’s draft. The franchise had the worst record in the Eastern Conference, absorbing 27 losses in the previous 40-game regular season.

The West’s Seattle Storm and Phoenix Mercury had worse winning percentages — 27.5% and 22.5%, respectively — but didn’t get the luck of the draw. Both teams don’t have a pick in the first round, for Los Angeles and Chicago control theirs. The 2020 champion has to hear 11 draft pick announcements before getting its turn, while the 2021 runner-up has to sit out the first two rounds.

Meanwhile, the Fever’s 2024 first pick will be its eighth in the top four since 2018. Its best acquisition was South Carolina alum Aliyah Boston — the 2023 season’s Rookie of the Year. The three-time finalist is poised to call dibs on a needle mover who can finally change its fortunes.

The franchise has been a bottom-feeder in recent memory. Indiana has missed the playoffs since the 2016 season when it lost to Phoenix in the first round, signaling the end of the 2011 MVP Tamika Catchings’ illustrious career. The Indianapolis-based women’s club has been rebuilding in the past seven years, tallying an average winning percentage of 24.97% and ending as the cellar dweller three times.

A random hoop in Indiana.

The upcoming draft should inspire optimism in Fever fans because 2024 is unlike the previous years. If all turns out as expected, this small-market team in a hoops-crazy state will obtain the services of the potential next face of the WNBA.

WNBA Draft Order

Here’s the order of the first round of the WNBA’s 2024 Draft:

  1. Indiana Fever
  2. Los Angeles Sparks
  3. Chicago Sky
  4. Los Angeles Sparks
  5. Dallas Wings
  6. Washington Mystics
  7. Minnesota Lynx
  8. Chicago Sky
  9. Dallas Wings
  10. Connecticut Sun
  11. New York Liberty
  12. Atlanta Dream

The sequence of selection in the second round is as follows:

  1. Chicago Sky
  2. Seattle Storm
  3. Indiana Fever
  4. Las Vegas Aces
  5. New York Liberty
  6. Las Vegas Aces
  7. Connecticut Sun
  8. Atlanta Dream
  9. Washington Mystics
  10. Connecticut Sun
  11. New York Liberty
  12. Las Vegas Aces

The teams picking in the third round are:

  1. Phoenix Mercury
  2. Seattle Storm
  3. Indiana Fever
  4. Los Angeles Sparks
  5. Phoenix Mercury
  6. Washington Mystics
  7. Minnesota Lynx
  8. Atlanta Dream
  9. Dallas Wings
  10. Connecticut Sun
  11. New York Liberty
  12. Las Vegas Aces

Trades have impacted a third of all these selections. The Chicago Sky has tremendous draft capital. The 2021 champion snagged the 3rd and 13th overall picks from Phoenix and the 8th from Atlanta via Los Angeles and traded away the 5th to the Dallas Wings, the 17th to the New York Liberty and the 29th to the Mercury — a fantastic exchange.

Moreover, the defending champ gets to draft four rookies, tying with Dallas with the most picks this year.

Is Caitlin Clark Going to the WNBA?

Caitlin Clark declared herself for the 2024 Draft on February 29, 2024, forgoing the COVID-19 eligibility extension to play for another NCAA season and ending her stellar four-year college basketball career at Iowa. Clark is easily one of the most sought-after WNBA Draft prospects ever.

A Wilson basketball with the NCAA logo.

Clark led Iowa to its first national final appearance in 2023. She is the NCAA Division 1 all-time scoring leader, male or female. The widely touted Hawkeye overtook Kansas star Lynette Woodard as the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women’s (AIAW) major-college scoring leader on February 28, 2024. Then, she surpassed NBA legend “Pistol Pete” Maravich’s 3,667 points — which stood for 54 years — four days later.

On April 1, 2024, the 22-year-old phenom exploded for 41 points and shot 45% beyond the arc in a revenge game against the reigning national champion LSU Tigers. This marvelous Elite Eight performance propelled the Hawkeyes into the Final Four for the second straight year and the third time overall. Her career points reached 3,900 after the March Madness game.

Aside from her scoring accolades, “Ponytail Pete” dished her 1,001st dime on February 11, 2024. This milestone made the West Des Moines native the first D1 women’s college basketball member of the 3,000-point and 1,000-assist club.

The Caitlin Clark Effect could bolster interest in the WNBA. The Gen Z markswoman has received tremendous media exposure during her historic NCAA stint. Competing against Stephen Curry — a transcendent offensive weapon — in a special 3-point contest during the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend was a huge feather in her cap.

Historically, NCAA fame doesn’t translate to WNBA interest. Only time will tell how many of the 12.6 million people who tuned in to the 2023 national championship game Clark would bring into the product.

Will Caitlin Clark Be the First Pick?

Various mock drafts have the Iowa senior as a lock at number one. The Indiana Fever won’t pass up on the chance to acquire a generational talent like Clark who could bag 10 scoring titles a la Michael Jordan. For all we know, the embattled franchise might have already stitched her #22 jersey.

If ESPN’s WNBA Draft predictions prove prophetic, the first round will pan out this way:

  1. Caitlin Clark to the Indiana Fever
  2. Cameron Brink to the Los Angeles Sparks
  3. Rickea Jackson to the Chicago Sky
  4. Kamilla Cardoso to the Los Angeles Sparks
  5. Aaliyah Edwards to the Dallas Wings
  6. Nyadiew Puoch to the Washington Mystics
  7. Angel Reese to the Minnesota Lynx
  8. Alissa Pili to the Chicago Sky
  9. Georgia Amoore to the Dallas Wings
  10. Jacy Sheldon to the Connecticut Sun
  11. Charisma Osborne to the New York Liberty
  12. Elizabeth Kitley to the Atlanta Dream

Four-time NCAA D1 women’s basketball champion coach Kim Mulkey considers ESPN’s insinuation that Angel Reese — her superstar and the 2023 Women’s Final Four Most Outstanding Player — would be available for the 7th selection in the 2024 WNBA Draft insulting.

Are You Excited for the 2024 WNBA Draft?

The WNBA’s 2024 Draft is must-watch TV. If there’s a baller who can draw the masses toward the league, it’s Caitlin Clark. She has the skill, charisma and personality to usher in a new, promising era for women’s basketball.
