Ford has been missing from the Australian Supercar circuit after ending their support and closing their Australian factory in 2015. There have been Ford cars participating in the race — the Ford Falcon held that spot until the end of the 2018 season. A new Mustang Supercar will be taking its place for 2019 — and it looks fantastic. Let’s take a closer look at what we currently know about this new supercar.
Retiring the Falcon
The Ford Falcon represented the blue oval on the Australian Supercar circuit for decades. It’s been produced in Australia for more than 50 years. Introduced in 1960, it was considered fragile because it wasn’t manufactured with the rough local roads in mind. In spite of this perceived fragility, it’s been a fan favorite for decades.
When the company stopped producing its street-legal counterpart in Australia in 2016, we knew it was only a matter of time before they had to replace the racing Falcon with something new. Since Ford retired the Falcon, they needed a new affordable sportscar for the Australian market, and the Mustang is perfectly poised to take that spot.
For the 2019 racing season, a new Mustang Supercar will be making its debut, and it looks incredible.
The Mustang Supercar
This newest incarnation of the Mustang has all of the bells and whistles you’d expect in a Pony Car, including a wing so large you’d think it could fly.
We don’t know a lot about the exact specifications of this new supercar — Ford has been notoriously closed-lipped about their new pony car, but because it is designed for the Australian Supercar races, it does have to meet particular criteria to qualify.
Under the hood, the new Mustang has a 5.0L V8 engine — the classic Ford V8 — that’s tuned to generate between 620 and 650 horsepower. It will also have a 6-speed manual transmission and can’t weigh less than 3,110 pounds.
We’ll see six different Mustangs at this year’s race, in the hands of three different racing teams — Tickford Racing, Shell V-Power Racing and 23Red Racing. It will be interesting to see what these three different teams do to make their supercar stand out from the crowd.
2019 Australian Supercar Races
The 2019 Supercars race season is set to begin with the Superloop Adelaide 500 which runs from February 28th to March 3rd. The season continues through the year until it finishes with the Coates Hire Newcastle 500 on November 22nd through the 24th. Once the season is over, we’ll have a better idea of how well the Mustang does and whether it has the power to support Ford’s supercar legacy.
Final Thoughts
We’ve got high hopes for the new Mustang Supercar. In addition to looking stunning, this pony car has decades of support and Ford ingenuity to back it up. We may see the blue oval racking up more than a few titles during this supercar racing season. Check back with us in November once the Supercar season is over, and we’ll have some more information for you.
