When you think about things that could go wrong with your car, you probably think about your engine, tires or frame. However, one little device could mean big problems for your vehicle — the camshaft position sensor. Is it safe to drive with a bad camshaft sensor? Here’s what you need to know.

What Is a Camshaft Sensor?

A camshaft position sensor is a device that monitors your engine’s inlet and exhaust valves. It sends the information to your car’s main computer — the electric control unit (ECU). The ECU collects data from various sensors across the vehicle to ensure the internal combustion engine gets adequate air, fuel and spark at the right time to work as intended and run efficiently.

Although it’s just one of many eyes the ECU relies on to keep tabs on your vehicle’s performance, the cam sensor plays a more vital role than others. It ensures the camshaft’s position is optimal to support proper intake, compression, combustion and exhaust. One discrepancy can deprive intake and exhaust gases enough room to move freely.

As its name suggests, the camshaft position sensor only keeps an eye on the camshaft, which is at the top of an engine. This sensor reads how well your engine’s cylinders move to synchronize how your engine’s electric coils and fuel injectors activate.

However, the cam sensor is clueless about what’s going on with the bottom half. It works with the crankshaft position sensor to paint the whole picture for the ECU.

The crankshaft controls the movement of pistons. The position of pistons and valves must align to allow air and fuel to flow through correctly.

Camshaft cylinder head

You can usually find a camshaft sensor in the valve cover at the top of your car’s engine. Sometimes, manufacturers will place it on a cylinder head. Depending on an engine’s complexity, there may be more than one.

Camshaft sensors are hardy. Their circuitry can operate in hostile environments and resist electromagnetic interference or power spokes. Most are magnetic and can generate an alternate current for the electronic control module. Some models do need a separate power source.

What Happens When a Camshaft Sensor Goes Bad?

Your vehicle’s cam sensor can fail due to normal wear and tear. If you get into an accident, the impact can damage this component. Regardless of the nature of its failure, it spells disaster. The ECU will receive low-quality information if it can’t collect and transmit accurate data, defeating the purpose of car engine monitoring for optimum performance.

When this happens, the vehicle can burn more fuel than necessary or less than needed. You may experience a rough engine idle from rest. Your engine may stall and turn your vehicle into a road hazard. You may not be able to start your car at all.

Symptoms of a Bad Camshaft Sensor

Diagnosing a camshaft position sensor failure can be challenging. It manifests itself in various car problems, which also suggest other issues. The most common symptoms include the following.

Illuminated Check Engine Light

A broken camshaft position sensor is one of the reasons this dashboard light comes alive. The other causes for concern include:

  • Damaged alternator
  • Defective ignition coils
  • Dwindling fluid levels
  • Dying battery
  • Faulty wires
  • Inoperative spark plugs
  • Malfunctioning mass airflow sensor
  • Missing catalytic converter
  • Unsound exhaust pipe
  • Vacuum leak
  • Worn-out timing belt

The list goes on and on. Your car’s internal combustion engine has hundreds of parts, so it could be anything. Hooking a specialized computer into the onboard diagnostics-II port below the steering wheel near the door may aid your search.

Declining Fuel Efficiency

Aren’t you getting the same mileage out of your vehicle as before? Your camshaft position sensor may be shot. Clogged fuel injectors, an old air filter, a dirty oxygen sensor, unsuitable engine oil, deflated tires and misaligned wheels can also explain it.

Dirtier Emissions

Your automobile can’t burn fuel efficiently with a failing cam sensor. Expect the same result when you delay an oil change, there’s excessive fuel in the air/fuel mixture or your gas cap is loose.

Unburned Fuel Smell

If your camshaft sensor has seen better days, it can interfere with combustion. Your engine can’t burn all fuel, causing the unused amount to find its way out of the tailpipe and make its presence known by giving off a distinct gas odor.

Moreover, you can catch a whiff of gas fumes when your vehicle’s evaporative emissions system or fuel lines are leaky.

Transmission Shifting Woes

If your car enters limp mode to reduce the maximum speed it can go, its ECU may have detected something wrong with the cam position sensor, integrity of electrical wires or adequacy of transmission fluid level.

Engine Misfires

Camshaft sensors can have a hand in incorrect internal combustion reactions, and so can fuel mismatches, spark plugs, timing belts and vacuum lines.

Acceleration Hesitation

A compromised cam sensor is one of the reasons your engine may hesitate when stepping on the gas pedal, rendering your vehicle virtually impossible to drive. Other possibilities include issues with fuel delivery, the ignition system, circuits, vacuums and control modules.

While these symptoms could indicate other problems, a combination of these is common with a bad camshaft sensor.

Is It Safe to Drive With a Bad Camshaft Sensor?

The short answer is “no.” Though it might seem small and insignificant, your camshaft sensor sends vital information to the rest of your system, ensuring you can safely control your vehicle. You’ll put yourself and anyone else who drives your car at risk if you don’t remedy the issue as soon as possible.

Though everything could still be normal, you don’t want to take the chance.

How Long Can You Drive With a Bad Camshaft Sensor?

You could continue to drive with a bad cam sensor for as long as the engine doesn’t die. However, staying on the road without replacing your faulty component is ill-advised. The camshaft position sensor serves a critical function. Overlooking its significance endangers you, your fellow car occupants and the other motorists you cross paths with.

How Long Does It Take to Replace a Camshaft Sensor?

The good news is that changing your camshaft sensor is easy, and many car owners choose to do it themselves. Consult your car’s maintenance handbook to find out the camshaft position sensor’s location under the hood and how to detach and reattach it as your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends.

These sensors are available at various price points at automotive stores or online marketplaces. Purchase a new model to ensure the replacement will properly function. 

While vehicles are different, adding a new camshaft sensor is generally straightforward. Once you disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the sensor, you’ll need to replace the O-ring seal and install the new sensor.

Avoid Driving With a Bad Camshaft Sensor

Your camshaft sensor is critical in ensuring your car operates safely and efficiently. If you suspect you have a bad camshaft sensor, it’s best to address it immediately so your vehicle remains safe to drive and knows if there is a potential problem.

The automotive industry has slowly been developing self-driving vehicles for decades now. Although no one has achieved full driving automation yet, this technology has made significant advancements in recent years. Believe it or not, almost every car you see on the road today has some sort of automated features. Let’s break down the five levels of driving automation and see which category your vehicle falls under.

Level 1 — Driver Assistance

Most vehicles fall under Level 1 of driving automation, which includes driver support systems like steering assist, brake assist, adaptive cruise control and lane assist technology. The driver still has full control and  must remain alert at all times behind the wheel, but Level 1 automation can provide some extra help with speed or steering. However, it can’t help with both speed and steering at the same time. 

Level 2 — Partial Driving Automation

The second level of driving automation is the most common level these days. Every car with an advanced driving assistance system (ADAS) falls under this category. ADAS can take over steering, braking and acceleration in specific cases. For example, the highway driving assist feature can control the car’s movements on the highway but still requires the driver to have both hands on the steering wheel.

More advanced examples of partial driving automation are Ford’s highway driving assist, which allows hands-free driving on approved highways. Tesla’s new full self driving capability also falls under Level 2 because the driver must still pay attention to the road even though the car is doing the work.

Level 3 — Conditional Driving Automation

The levels of driving automation make a huge leap at Level 3, which is known as conditional driving automation. Level 3 technology is still in its infancy and approval is granted at the state level, which means you probably can’t use conditional driving automation in your area. It includes various unsupervised systems for specific situations, including highway and traffic jam assistance.

Unlike Levels 1 and 2, the driver doesn’t have to supervise Level 3 technology. They should still be able to retake control of the vehicle, but they don’t have to keep their hands on the wheel. Mercedes-Benz is currently developing the first legal Level 3 system in the U.S. market called Drive Pilot, which uses ultrasonic sensors, LiDAR, cameras, microphones and a digital map to analyze road geometry, traffic signs, unique traffic patterns and weather conditions.

Level 4 — High Driving Automation

Level 4 automation takes things a step further, as this technology is entirely self-sufficient and doesn’t require human supervision. It can even intervene if the driver has a health emergency or the vehicle experiences a system failure. The driver still has the option to manually override the system just in case it malfunctions.

However, Level 4 automation is only available in the realm of public transportation, namely self-driving robotaxis in slow and enclosed urban environments. The United States, Canada, France and China all have Level 4 cab services that are slowly being developed for both urban and highway environments. Don’t expect to see daily drivers with Level 4 automation any time soon, though. This technology has a long way to go.

Level 5 — Full Driving Automation

Level 5 vehicles have full driving automation that doesn’t require any human interaction whatsoever. In the future, they won’t have steering wheels or pedals, so manual operation isn’t even an option. The cars will do everything on their own. However, many automotive professionals question whether full automation is even possible.

Will Cars Ever Reach Full Driving Automation?

The quest to achieve all levels of driving automation has reached a roadblock in the early 2020s. While you can find many vehicles that fall under the first three levels, there is a significant drop-off at Levels 4 and 5. Automakers haven’t been able to solve the riddle of adding vehicles with high or full automation into a world of human drivers.

Consumer attitudes have also played a role. The simple fact is that most people don’t want fully autonomous vehicles. They are afraid or untrusting of the technology and would rather maintain control of their cars. They have no problem with advanced driver assistance systems, but they still want to be the primary operators. 

However, increasing collaborations between auto manufacturers could establish some industry standards with self-driving technology and increase the level of public trust. In previous years, Tesla and other big names pursued Level 4 and 5 projects on their own. Moving forward, wide-reaching efforts between companies will be the key to reaching full driving automation.

Level Up Your Driving Experience

If you’re in the market for a new car and don’t know where to start, you can narrow your search by focusing on vehicles with Level 1, 2 and 3 autonomous capabilities. Features like highway and lane assist will level up your driving experience and significantly reduce the risk of an accident. However, don’t expect to find any Level 4 cars during your search.

Driving at night can be lots of fun, but it can also be a stressful experience. Your vision is limited, you might be exhausted after a long day, and you never know when an animal or pedestrian could be roaming next to the roads.

If you’re struggling to see while driving at night or simply dislike night driving in general, this guide is for you. Here are a few basic tips to keep yourself and others safe when driving at night.

Take Care of Your Headlights

Your headlights are your first defense against the darkness. Without them, you would surely run headlong into countless people, animals and objects while driving. If you’re struggling to see while driving at night, it might not be your eyesight — it could be something wrong with your headlights.

You must keep your headlights in the best condition possible. For starters, you need to prevent them from fogging up so they work to full capacity and give you maximum visibility. Your low beams should illuminate at least 200 feet of the road in front of your car, while high beams light up 350 to 500 feet.

The reason why 200 feet is the bare minimum is because it takes most vehicles about 200 feet to come to a complete stop while traveling 60 mph. If you see something in the distance and are driving the speed limit, you should have enough time to slow down and avoid an accident.

Surprisingly, many headlights, even in new cars, are pointed lower than necessary. Others are unevenly pointed, and both of these miscues can severely impair your field of vision at night. Take the time to aim your headlights directly forward as high as you feel is necessary. Doing so will improve and extend your field of vision on the road.

Take Care of Your Eyes

It seems obvious to say that the nighttime has an effect on your eyes, but it’s especially true in the context of driving at night. The darkness drastically affects your eyesight. Your pupils dilate, which causes your eyes to detect movements and lights instead of sharp details and vivid colors you normally pick out during the day. 

Your depth perception is also dulled at night, which makes your eyes more disposed to feeling tired and dry. These factors make it more difficult to identify obstacles when driving at night. If you’re struggling to see while night driving despite having good headlights and getting assistance from street lights, you might want to get your vision checked.

Eye doctors recommend keeping your eyes moving and scanning the road while driving at night, rather than focusing all your vision on just one area. Scanning will help you detect movements and lights, and improve your reaction time. The American Optometric Association also suggests adults get a yearly eye exam to monitor a potential decline in vision.

Stay Focused and Alert

This rule applies to driving in general, but especially to driving at night. It’s very easy to let drowsiness take over while you’re behind the wheel, so staying sharp is of utmost importance. People have a lapse in concentration and space out while driving all the time, but it happens more often at night because there are fewer things for your eyes to focus on.

You also need to worry about another nighttime hazard — drunk drivers. Drunk driving is much more common at night for obvious reasons. People get out of work, have a few drinks and try to drive home in the darkness. If you encounter a reckless driver, the person might be intoxicated. Keep your distance from them and call the police if you think it’s necessary.

If you’re having trouble staying focused while night driving, you should consider doing a few things. Start by putting your phone away and keeping both hands on the wheel. Hide it in the glove compartment or throw it in the backseat — it’s not doing you any favors. You could also try turning off the radio and driving in silence for a while.

Even at night, there can be plenty of distractions on or next to the road, so don’t let your eyes wander and become fixated on something in the distance. Always stay on the lookout for oncoming traffic and try to anticipate the actions of the vehicles around you. To avoid the glare from other vehicle’s headlights, focus your eyes on the right side of the road until it passes.

Keep Your Distance

You should never tailgate other drivers under any circumstances, but avoiding this habit during night driving is especially important. Remember — visibility is low and your reaction time isn’t as fast. If the car in front of you slams on the brakes, you must give yourself enough space to slow down. Keep your distance from other vehicles at all times.

Another reason not to tailgate at night is because you might make other drivers nervous. Everyone is a little more on defense while driving at night, not just you. Being aggressive will make others uneasy, potentially causing them to make a mistake. Why risk an accident? Stay back from the vehicle in front of you and keep your driving under control.

Drive the Speed Limit

Speaking of keeping yourself under control, you need to drive the speed limit. You might get away with zooming down the highway during the day, but it’s much riskier at night. Many crashes occur on narrow two-lane roads and highways.

Driving the speed limit will give you more time to react to oncoming obstacles, including stopped vehicles, pedestrians and animals. It’s the simplest thing you can do while driving at night and yet it’s the one thing most people overlook.

Get Enough Rest

Being tired behind the wheel is normal, but you can’t ignore eye fatigue if it affects your driving performance. When your eyes start feeling heavy, just pull over and take a quick nap rather than staying on the road and endangering yourself. Truckers and other long-distance drivers know from experience that fatigued driving is a recipe for disaster.

You need to get enough rest if you drive at night daily. Get at least seven hours of sleep every night and take naps during the day if necessary. You also have an extremely helpful resource at your disposal — caffeine. Bring some coffee or an energy drink with you if you need an energy boost before a long nighttime drive.

Avoid Certain Roads

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the most dangerous roads while driving at night are two-lane highways and other long flat roads. On these types of roads, the glare from oncoming vehicles can be extremely bright because other drivers must face them head-on.

Roads with no street lights are also dangerous for an obvious reason — lower visibility increases the risk of a crash. Side streets with lots of hills and curves have a similar problem, presenting many opportunities for collisions. If you’re not 100% comfortable driving on these roads at night, avoid them and find another route.

Knowing how to drive at night is an important skill to have. If you want complete freedom behind the wheel, you must overcome your fears about driving at night and keep practicing. Even if you’re still not fully comfortable, these tips will at least make your nighttime driving more safe.

It looks cool and you’ll feel as cool while doing it, but did you know it can save your life? Stuntmen, professional drivers and security personnel swear by this driving technique to get them out of tight spots with some added action-hero flair. Here’s what you need to know to learn it.

What is a J-turn?

A J-turn or a reverse 180, is a tactical driving maneuver to bring a car to a controlled spin. The driver starts in reverse, picks up speed, turns the steering wheel 180 degrees to initiate a spin and drives forward. The J-turn is an evasive driving maneuver to evade chasing vehicles with rapid acceleration and a quick turn.

The J-turn is also known as the “moonshiner’s turn” and the “Rockford spin” as a nod to the 1970s television show Rockford Files, which popularized the driving technique. Professional stunt drivers in movies and television often use the flashy technique in car chase scenes. The driving maneuver is also taught in tactical driving courses in professional driving schools.

A similar driving technique called the “bootlegger’s turn” uses the same skidding principle. 3. Turn the Steering Wheel 180 Degrees Counterclockwise

Take your foot off the accelerator and put your hand on the steering wheel at 12 o’clock. Turn the wheel 180 degrees counterclockwise to the 6 o’clock position quickly.

4. Initiate the Spin

If you love old detective and action movies, you know the speedy U-turn to evade bad guys or cops. These turns have an interesting history. From moonshine transport to dapper detectives, here’s the history of the bootlegger turn and the J-turn and how you tell the difference. 

The Bootlegger Turn 

A bootlegger’s turn, also known as a “moonshiner’s turn” or “donut,” is an evasive maneuver involving making a sharp, counterclockwise turn while keeping the vehicle moving forward.

It was invented by the legendary Junior Johnson as a maneuver to evade police while transporting moonshine. Producers of homemade whiskey and other alcohol would employ drivers like Johnson to transport the illegal products to their customers. Since the alcohol was homemade and transported privately, moonshine makers would not pay tax. 

The bootlegger’s turn allowed drivers to change their direction quickly and drive away from police and tax revenue agents if needed. Drivers had to modify their cars to haul extra weight but still look normal to those unaware. This could be anything from secret compartments, engine and transmission modifications to larger carburetors or an extra tank under the back seat.  

From Bootlegging to NASCAR 

Johnson was known for his fascination with cars and his ability to handle high speeds. Eventually, he started a career as a NASCAR driver. Although he won 5 races in his first full season, he continued transporting moonshine. He was arrested and spent 11 months in jail. After his release, he did some more races. Junior Johnson won 50 races in total then retired to become an owner. His team won over 132 races and he was named one of NASCAR’s greatest drivers in 1998.

Along with the bootlegger turn, Junior Johnson also influenced the use of drafting, a racing technique used in most motor or racing sports today. Johnson figured out how to use another car’s speed for a Daytona 500 superspeedway during practice. His speed was 22mph slower than the top cars in the race, and he wanted to increase the speed. 

A faster car passed him during a test run and he realized that his car had increased speed because of the faster car’s slipstream– the forward suction coming from the vehicle’s speed. He stayed close behind the car and on the final lap was able to overtake the car and speed right past it. Johnson used this technique to win the race, and his technique became a common practice in NASCAR races. 

How To Do the Bootlegger Turn 

Use a car with a foot emergency break and tape the brake release handle in the open position. You may have to turn off your stability control system to get the car to fully turn.  

  1. Find an empty parking lot or race track to practice. You should have at least two cars wide space to perform the turn. 
  2. Drive straight at 25 mph.
  3. One hand should be on the steering wheel and the other on the emergency brake or hand brake. 
  4. Turn the steering wheel to the right. 
  5. Push the foot brake and clutch while you turn the steering wheel sharply to the left until your hand is at the bottom of the steering wheel.
  6. When the car is now at 90 degrees, release the emergency brake. Straighten the steering wheel and shift into a lower gear. 
  7. Accelerate and drive off.  

The J-Turn 

The J-Turn is similar to the bootleg turn, except you reverse and turn the car 180 degrees to go in the opposite direction. 

You have probably seen this maneuver in one of the best car movies, but it was made famous by Detective Jim Rockford in The Rockford Files series. The J-turn was his signature move. The actor who played the detective, James Garner was considered one of the best drivers in Hollywood at the time. He would do his own driving stunts and use the J-turn to run from bad guys in the show. Eventually, Garner started racing professionally and even owned a racing team. 

How To Do a J-Turn 

  1. If you are driving forward, stop the car and reverse at about 25 mph. Use your mirrors to see where you’re going. Your left hand should be at the top of the steering wheel. 
  2. Reverse for about 3 seconds to build momentum. 
  3. Press the clutch and take your foot off the gas. 
  4. Turn the wheel 180 degrees (from 12 o clock to 6 o clock). 
  5. The car will start to spin. 
  6. When the car is at 90 degrees, shift into a low gear, straighten the steering wheel and accelerate to drive forward. 

What’s the Difference Between a J-Turns and a Bootlegger Turn?

Both terms describe driving maneuvers that involve turning a vehicle around in a tight space. While both techniques can be useful for executing quick U-turns or navigating narrow roads, they differ in their execution and purpose.

Which Turn Is Better?

Unlike a bootlegger’s turn, which focuses on a quick reversal of direction, a J-turn is designed to allow the driver to execute a full 180-degree turn without leaving the road or going into opposing traffic.

Although both turns are equally epic, the main advantage of a J-turn over a bootlegger’s turn is that it allows you to maintain control and avoid skidding or sliding, which can be particularly important when driving on slippery or uneven surfaces.

J-turns are also generally safer than bootlegger’s turns since they do not require you to reverse direction at high speeds. However, the trade-off is that J-turns typically take longer to execute than bootlegger’s turns, which can be a challenge in emergency situations where time is of the essence.

Anyone who has a love for fast-speed vehicles has at some point wondered how they could drift their car. While it is easier than many would think, it does require a lot of practice.

Not to say that drifting is easy, but it does become almost second nature the more you have done it. Here is everything you need to know on how to drift a car.

What Is Drifting? 

Simply put, drifting is putting a car into oversteer to make it turn sideways around a corner or bend. Oversteering is when you turn the steering wheel to make the back of your car rotate. To drift, you must maintain balance and control of the vehicle for a turn. 

Safety First 

It’s important to take all safety precautions and protective measures before you start drifting. Take some time to check your car and wear the right equipment for exciting rides. 

Drift in a controlled environment. Drifting on public roads or intersections is risky. Reserve your drifting to racetracks and karting tracks– they host drift events where you can drift on open paved areas. If you want to practice, you can also gather friends and rent a racetrack. 

Wear the right shoes. You want to wear shoes that protect your feet and are comfortable. Some prefer wearing worn-in shoes so their feet are closer to the pedals. This can be anything from a pair of high-top chucks or vans (with ankle socks to protect your heels from friction and blisters) or pro-racing shoes like the Racequip race shoe with ankle support and an extended sole to protect your heels. 

Wear a helmet. With any motorsport, wearing protective gear like a helmet is essential. A simple  Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) professional standard helmet will do if you want to attend drift days. If you start to compete, you must get a helmet with a higher certification. 

Car checks. Ensure your engine’s coolant and oil levels are up to standard.  Also, check for any leaks, damage or worn wheel bearings that may affect performance.

Can You Drift Any Car? 

Besides safety equipment, certain ideal conditions will make your drifting experience better. 

Go for manual transmission over automatic transmission. Although you can use automatic transmission for drifting, manual gives more control over the process with the clutch pedal and gear shift. With more control, you can achieve the right speeds and angles required for drifting.

The basics needed for a good drift are a front engine, rear-wheel drive, or front-wheel drive. Ideally, You should also have a locking differential. This allows the tires to rotate at the same speed when needed for a controlled turn. You can still use an open-type differential, but it may feel slightly awkward. Turn off any stability control or electronic traction when you’re on the track to drift correctly.

Use worn-out tires. While grippy tires are suitable for everyday driving, you need worn-out tires so the car slides easily around corners when drifting. In your tire selection process, look for tires with shallow tread patterns, strong midribs, wide grooves and hard vulcanized rubber for strength and durability. 

How to Drift 

A drift has a few basic parts. Take your time to learn the correct technique and see what’s best for you. To start, here are some steps to follow: 

Step 1: Starting the Drift

The first step is approaching the corner and pressing down on the gas hard enough to initiate an oversteer. As mentioned, If you are using a road car, you will need to quickly step on the brake to shift the weight from the back tires to the front.

After you have stepped on the gas, quickly flick the steering wheel in the direction of the corner. This step is not easy and will need a lot of practice to understand how much throttle is needed.

Step 2: Catching the Drift

Next up is catching the drift, which proves difficult when first starting. In this stage, once the car begins to oversteer, it will require the driver to quickly let go of the wheel so that the vehicle’s rear can slide out.

Step 3: Holding the Drift

Once you have caught the drift, you will need to maintain it. This is the fun part. Here, the driver must alternate between steering and pressing down on the throttle.

This requires a little practice. Once you start maintaining the drift, you will soon discover what exactly is needed to keep the vehicle from spinning out of control.

Step 4: Transitioning the Drift

Once you get better at drifting, you will want to transition from one corner to another. This is probably the most challenging part of learning how to drift a car.

Transitioning requires the driver to slightly overrotate the vehicle and then let go of the throttle. This movement will allow the tires to temporarily regain grip and cause the back of the vehicle to move in the other direction.

Next, let go of the wheel again and catch it at the right time. While letting go of the steering wheel feels unnatural at first, it becomes second nature with a bit of practice.

Step 5: Ending the Drift

This step requires letting the drift run out or taking your foot off the throttle to help straighten the vehicle. While this is a little tricky initially, it becomes easier to know what actions are required to stop the car from drifting.

Techniques that will get you drifting like a pro

Reaching Polish drifter Bartosz Ostalowski’s Guinness World record speed of 143.9 mph is a drifter’s dream, but you can only get there by practicing different techniques to improve your drifting skills. 

Successive slides. 

You can try successive drifts when you get the hang of your drifting technique. To do this, you keep the power of the first drift and repeat the process. The car will swing beneath you, you catch it and move into the next slide. 

Braking drift. 

You perform this drift by braking before the corner to push the car’s weight to the front wheels. The back wheels will rise and lose traction. You then use a combination of shifting and breaking to balance the car. 

Swaying drift, aka Choku-Dori.

With this technique, you use your countersteer and throttle to sway the car’s weight back and forth while moving on a straight road. 

Tips for the perfect drift: 

  • Approach turns at a reasonable speed. 
  • Use both the steering wheel and throttle to maintain control. 
  • Stay on the throttle and keep the car in a controlled slide. 
  • Keep your eyes ahead so you maintain focus and see upcoming corners. 
  • Accelerate through the turn to help you keep control and maintain the optimal drift angle. 
  • Lower gears produce tighter turns. 
  • If you lose control or start spinning out, use your handbrake to correct the drift.
