Mitsubishi is among the world leaders in producing cars, motorcycles, musical instruments and other hobby objects. The Delica is one of their most popular vehicles because it’s great for road trips and outdoor adventures. However, it’s unavailable in the United States. Could the Momentum 2030 initiative finally bring the big machine to America? Here’s your guide to the future of Mitsubishi North America.

What Is the Mitsubishi Delica?

Mitsubishi began Delica production in the late 1960s, following the rise in minibus popularity. These vehicles became prominent because of their versatility for road trips, protests and other cultural movements. While nearly 60 years old, the Delica has received numerous facelifts and upgrades through the years. The machine remains popular with outdoor enthusiasts because it’s durable and great for camping — just not in the United States.

The Japanese manufacturer once produced the Delica in the United States under the Wagon name. Mitsubishi sent Wagons off production lines between 1987 and 1990 before ceasing sales. Why did the automaker build this minibus in America? Mitsubishi tried to take advantage of Chrysler’s minivan success by sending the Delica under a new name. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long due to poor handling and a lack of crash protection.

What Is Mitsubishi Momentum 2030?

Person driving a Mitsubishi car in the daytime

If you long for the Delica’s return, you may be in luck. Auto industry experts say an American rendezvous could be in store for this classic machine. Why are they enthusiastic? Look no further than Mitsubishi Momentum 2030. This renaissance aims to elevate the company as a top automotive manufacturer by introducing more vehicles by the decade’s end. Mitsubishi only has four machines in its lineup, but the Delica could rejoin it.

What else does Mitsubishi Momentum 2030 entail? Mitsubishi wants to establish itself as a leader in sustainable machinery, so expect to see all-electric and hybrid options on dealership lots. These vehicles release zero harmful emissions into the atmosphere, so it makes sense for the automaker to focus on efficient cars. Electric vehicles (EVs) are terrific for the outdoors because they care for the environment more than gas-powered cars.

Will Momentum 2030 Bring the Delica to the States?

Mitsubishi steering wheel picture taken from the backseat

Momentum 2030 should feature new cars and revive older models, so a Delica reboot could be in the cards. An Automotive News report says Mitsubishi wants to bring a passenger van to its American lineup. What will the vehicle look like? While it won’t resemble the 1960s versions, this potentially revamped Mitsubishi Delica appears futuristic. The auto industry got its first look at this van when the company unveiled the D:X concept last fall.

In October 2023, Mitsubishi Motors showed the world its electric crossover with all-wheel control. The automaker didn’t directly name the Delica, but the next model certainly takes inspiration from the older minibus. This multipurpose vehicle (MPV) makes up for the qualities the previous Mitsubishi Delica models lacked. For instance, Mitsubishi prioritizes safety with the D:X by enhancing the body and making it more conducive to off-roading. You also get excellent fenders for improved strength.

What Mitsubishi Cars Can You Drive in the Meantime?

Mitsubishi Momentum 2030 includes plans for the next six years, so it could be a while before all the automobiles come to fruition. What machines can you drive in the meantime? Here are all three vehicles in the current lineup.

Eclipse

A red Mitsubishi Eclipse in a parking lot

When you think of the Eclipse, you probably start thinking about family. This car belongs to Brian O’Conner in the Fast and the Furious movies and is integral to the movie’s lore. O’Conner used it in his first street race, setting up the rest of the franchise for epic competition. Celebrate Paul Walker by driving an Eclipse if you want to commemorate his character. While it was out of the lineup for a while, the Eclipse has returned.

The 2024 Eclipse is now a crossover, as Mitsubishi focuses on the family-friendly side of the vehicle market. Despite having SUV characteristics, the Eclipse packs a punch with its turbocharged engine in the standard package. If you like rally cars, the Eclipse with the RALLIART trim could be up your alley. This edition has an excellent paint scheme with a white diamond finish around the vehicle. The car lets you indulge in luxurious accessories.

Mirage G4

Unfortunately, 2024 is the last year we’ll see the Mirage. Mitsubishi announced last summer it would discontinue the model due to poor sales. The car’s sales dropped 57% compared to 2022, so the automaker will move on to other priorities. In the meantime, we’ll appreciate the car because it’s a terrific machine. Sedans still have a place in the 2020 automotive market, and the Mirage fills the niche better than other cars on dealership lots.

Why does the Mirage stand out? Mitsubishi’s last sedan excels in fuel mileage, boasting 39 miles per gallon (mpg) for superb efficiency. Super fuel economy typically requires hybrid technology, but the Mirage nearly reaches 40 mpg without battery technology. Like other sedans, the Mirage has a low profile to aid its fuel economy. If you want enhanced efficiency, you don’t have to look further than the last Mitsubishi Mirage.

Outlander

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Mitsubishi’s most popular vehicle. The Outlander is the automaker’s flagship machine, selling over 22,000 cars in the third quarter of 2023. You may wonder why Mitsubishi has two SUVs in its lineup, considering it only has three vehicles. A few differences between the Outlander and the Eclipse Cross are worth mentioning. One may be better for families than the other.

The most significant distinction between the vehicles is the engine displacement. The Outlander has a bigger engine than the Eclipse Cross, thus giving you more horsepower on the open road. Size is another difference, considering the Outlander gives you a little more legroom in the front and back seats. The Eclipse Cross has the upper hand for safety, with a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) compared to four for the Outlander.

Anticipating Momentum 2030 and Next Mitsubishi Delica

The most prominent automakers in the U.S. include Toyota, Ford and General Motors (GM). Mitsubishi wants to use Momentum 2030 to join the elite group of auto manufacturers. How will they do it? The Japanese manufacturer has teased its fans with the D:X prototype built for road trips and off-roading. If everything goes to plan, Mitsubishi will debut new vehicles and overhaul old models for the American market.

Do you want to look stylish without compromising on comfort? If so, you need to update your wardrobe to include seersucker, linen, chambray, nylon and cotton blends this summer. Clothing like golf shorts, men’s crop tops and Panama hats should be your warm-weather go-tos.

Men’s Summer Jackets

Most jackets become unusable in summer, meaning layering becomes unbearable. While you could just suffer through the sweat, functionality is one of the most important factors of a good wardrobe. In other words, you need breathable alternatives.

Chambray Jacket

Chambray looks like denim but is much more breathable. It’s typically made from a cotton and linen blend, which allows air to pass through the fibers. Unlike denim, it’s soft to the touch. A jacket made with this material captures that classic summer vibe without being too stiff or hot.

Noragi Jacket

The Noragi is a signature Japanese jacket with workwear roots. Now, it’s a popular streetwear piece. This long-sleeved, lightweight piece has ties instead of zippers or buttons to keep things airy. You can wear it to replace a cardigan, shirt or blazer.

Men’s Summer Tops

Whether you want to wear unconventional shirts like a men’s crop top or stick with classics like button-downs, we’ve got you covered.

Short-Sleeve Button-Down

Can you ever go wrong with a short-sleeve button-down? You can dress it up or down, so it’s perfect for any occasion. While solid-color shirts work fine, we recommend branching out into florals, stripes, color blocks or geometric patterns for summer.

A man in a white shirt

Men’s Crop Top

Guys without six-packs can pull off men’s crop tops, if you were wondering. Don’t worry if you don’t have your beach bod yet — you can pair this shirt with high-waisted pants. This way, you can stay cool while capturing that perfect summer silhouette.

Finding the perfect men’s crop top for summer is about practicality. While mesh is great for adventurous guys, cotton might be better for gym-goers. The length of the crop matters, too. You can experiment to determine what you’re comfortable with and what looks good.

Oxford Weave Shirt

An Oxford weave is a unique fabric that is lightweight, coarse and durable. Long-sleeve shirts like this are perfect for formal and semi-formal events in summer. While they usually come in solid colors, you can also find striped and checkerboard versions.

A man in a white shirt

Knit Polo

A knit polo should be your go-to for beach days, nights out and semi-formal events. You’ll stay — and look — cool whether you wear a long or short sleeve. Consider a loose-knit polo if your style leans toward comfy and casual.

Men’s Summer Bottoms

Are you tired of wearing the same worn-out basketball shorts? Do you find yourself having to temporarily alter your walking style to subtly adjust your you-know-what when you get too sweaty? If you said yes to either of those questions, you need summer pants.

Cuffed Chinos

If you don’t know, chinos are a kind of pant made from a synthetic cotton blend. They trend in the summer because they’re so lightweight. Cuffing the relaxed or slim-fit types looks good and gives extra breathability.

A man in white shoes

Golf Pants

Golf pants come in various fits and fabrics — their lightweight blend and classic silhouette are their main identifiable characteristics. They were designed for long days in the hot sun, so you know they’re comfortable. Although golf shorts are cooler, pants are seen as more professional and polished.

A man golfing

While classic golf pants come in tan, grey, black and beige, plenty of interesting alternatives exist. For example, you can find them in teal, orange, salmon, powder blue or mint. You can pair them with a neutral shirt for a stylish, laid-back look.

Light Wash Jeans

Although denim isn’t as breathable as cotton, nylon or linen, it is a classic wardrobe staple for any season. If you need it to complete your look but don’t want to be drenched in sweat, consider a light wash. Lighter colors attract less heat, so you’ll stay cooler.

A man in jeans

Cotton Blend Shorts

A cotton, polyester and elastane blend looks and feels softer than pure cotton — and it’s more breathable. These are the kinds of shorts you can sleep in and be seen in. You can wear them to the gym, the beach or the bar.

Nylon Joggers

Every guy needs a nice pair of nylon joggers for when the temperature starts rising. They’re stretchy and breathable, so you can stay cool while being active. More importantly, you don’t have to worry about feeling sweaty or sticky after going outside.

Men’s Summer Shoes

You need at least two pairs of warm-weather shoes — one to get dirty and one to wear out. If you plan on going to the beach and going out in public at least once this summer, you might need to update your shoe rack.

Rubber Buckle Slides

Men’s rubber buckle slides are the perfect shoes for the beach. Not only do they look good, but they’re lightweight, breathable and durable. Best of all, you can rinse sand and saltwater off of them without worrying about getting them wet.

Resort Wear Sandals

Every guy needs a good slip-on, closed-toe pair of shoes — one that doesn’t look like it’s seen the front line of a battlefield. Men’s resortwear sandals are high-end versions of what you’d find at a department store when searching for casual summer footwear.

You can easily find cheap dupes of name brands online. We recommend searching for perforated or woven resort-wear sandals if you want a pair of shoes with maximum ventilation. Beige, brown, white, green and black should be your go-to colors to keep things versatile.

Suede Derby Shoes

Suede derby shoes can be dressed up or down, making them the perfect shoe for semi-formal and formal events. While the style looks classy, the material is more casual — the perfect pairing for summer.

White Canvas Sneakers

White canvas sneakers should be a staple in your closet if they’re not already. They’re simple, breathable and stylish. Plus, even most high-end pairs are affordable, so you don’t have to worry about breaking the bank to update your wardrobe for summer.

White shoes

Men’s Summer Accessories

Every good summer outfit has accessories. While you might be able to stick with the same chains, belts and ties, you’ll need to swap out your glasses and hats for something more warm-weather friendly.

Aviators

Aviators combine functionality with style. If you don’t already own a pair, you should know they’re a summer essential. While styles from high-end brands can cost hundreds of dollars, you can find affordable alternatives and inexpensive dupes online.

A man in with sandals

Panama Hat

A Panama hat looks like a subdued straw hat — it’s more refined. It provides much-needed sun protection, is stylish and can hide a bad haircut. Plus, it looks way better than your standard baseball cap would.

Update Your Wardrobe in Preparation for Warm Weather

Finding the perfect men’s crop top, golf pants, chambray jacket or aviators should be relatively easy. There are tens of thousands of options online and in brick-and-mortar stores, so you can easily apply our lookbook to your life. In other words, you shouldn’t have any trouble tailoring these clothes to your style this summer.

Tesla is the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, but it has recently faced setbacks. Now, the automaker says it will cut about 10% of its workforce.

What sparked the recent Tesla layoff? Automotive industry reporters have commented on the job cuts and indicated the causes.

Here’s what we know about the most recent Tesla news.

What Has Driven the Recent Tesla Layoff?

The first quarter of 2024 has brought unwelcome news for Tesla employees and shareholders. End-of-quarter reports indicate the EV manufacturer saw an 8.5% decline in deliveries compared to 2023, producing just over 433,000 vehicles. Wall Street investors expected Tesla to deliver over 450,000 cars, so the automaker fell behind expectations.

This news broke the first week of April, leading to a further decline in Tesla stock. Shares of the Texas-based EV manufacturer have fallen 33% since January, indicating the company’s growth has slowed.

Following the first-quarter report, Tesla has planned to lay off a portion of its worldwide workforce. An April 15 memo from CEO Elon Musk explains what’s happening with the company. In the letter, Musk tells employees that Tesla will reduce its workforce by 10% to reduce costs and increase productivity.

Tesla employees work at its headquarters in Austin, Texas, and its numerous factories nationwide. Additionally, the automaker has offices and factories in Germany, Canada and China. The company employed about 140,000 people as of late 2023, so expect about 14,000 impacted jobs worldwide in this round of layoffs.

Price Cuts

What signs led to this layoff at Tesla? First, consider what the manufacturer said in January. Musk said 2024 deliveries would be lower than 2023 when it sold a record 1.8 million vehicles.

2023 was a booming year for Tesla, as it saw a 40% increase compared to its 2022 numbers.

The outlook was rosy until late 2023, when the renowned EV automaker started cutting prices. A backlog of Model Y SUVs led Tesla to cut the price tag by $5,000 or more to mitigate the surplus. Tesla may have overestimated vehicle demand and is looking to shore up losses in 2024.

White Tesla

What’s Next for Tesla After the Layoff News?

As Musk said in the memo, Tesla is heading in a new direction as it searches for new opportunities in the automotive world. One area to keep an eye on is Tesla’s Redwood project. Reports show this Tesla model could debut in 2025 and introduce a more affordable EV for consumers.

What would this model look like? If it comes to fruition, the Redwood project will produce a compact crossover and be Tesla’s first mass-produced vehicle. The Teslarati report also says the EV would cost around $25,000, becoming one of the most affordable electric machines on the market. This price tag would make it cheaper than the Chevrolet Bolt, opening the door for consumers who want to get their foot in the electric door.

Robotaxi Anticipation

Redwood is only one part of Tesla’s reported plan for the next generation of vehicles. While the Y, 3, S and X models have succeeded, the company is pivoting in a new direction following the layoffs. Another project that could come to fruition is the robotaxi.

This proposed EV would have no steering wheel or pedals, thus buying into the concept of autonomous vehicles. Robotaxi owners would send the car to pick up their groceries and run errands without a driver.

Musk reportedly is all in with the robotaxi, pushing all his chips to the middle by spending billions on NVIDIA technology. The Tesla CEO wants to focus on the robotaxi instead of the Redwood project for the foreseeable future. When will consumers see the low-price EV in Tesla showrooms? Don’t expect these electric cars to roll off production lines in 2024.

What Do the Layoffs Mean for the EV Market?

The recent Tesla layoffs are one symptom of a larger recent trend — the decreasing demand for EVs. 2020 through 2023 saw a jump from 300,000 units sold to 1.6 million in the United States. Consumers were eager to purchase EVs and lower their carbon footprint. However, the automotive industry predicts a slowdown will occur in 2024.

For example, General Motors (GM) CEO Mary Barra said the slowing pace of EV growth will mean the company’s brands will build to demand and reduce current production. Similarly, Ford will build fewer F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E units because the demand isn’t what the auto manufacturers thought it would be.

Have Other Automakers Laid Off Workers?

Price cuts and a mass layoff are not exclusive to Tesla. Other automakers building EVs have announced job cuts due to market conditions. For instance, Ford laid off about 700 employees last October in its Dearborn, Michigan, plant. These workers built the Ford F-150 Lightning, so cooling EV demand is one reason why Ford laid them off. Sales for the electric truck fell nearly 50% in 2023 compared to 2022, prompting the manufacturer to make changes.

In December, GM announced a 1,300-employee layoff at plants producing Chevrolet and GMC EVs. The Orion and Lansing Grand River facilities produce the Bolt EV, Bolt EUV Crossover, Silverado EV and Sierra EV. However, the company said it would postpone its production of electric pickups into 2025.

Understanding the Tesla Layoff News

The automotive industry has seen massive changes in the last few years. EV demand has risen and fallen sharply, affecting the nation’s largest automakers. Tesla is the most recent domino to fall, with dipping sales and demand the leading reasons for these cuts.

Industry insiders and those interested in investing in these vehicles should monitor market conditions to see if the trend continues or reverses. This will shine a light on what to expect in the future.

Wiper blades might seem indestructible, but they don’t last forever. Even if you take good care of them, months of wiping snow, rain, dirt and dead bugs off your windshield will eventually render them useless. The end result? Sticky blades that make a smudgy mess and block your line of sight. Some can even make horrible screeching sounds when the rubber begins to peel off the blade. You need to change your windshield wipers now and again.

Even your windshield wipers themselves — this includes the arm — can bend and break after months or years of use. Luckily, removing and changing your windshield wipers and blades is simple and affordable. In fact, you could easily buy replacements and save yourself some money just doing the job yourself.

Different Types of Wiper Clips

Before you start removing the wipers, you need to look at the blade mount. There are six different types of blade mounts, depending on the make and model of your vehicle. Hook-style clips are simple j-shaped hooks that latch to the wiper with the tab. Side-lock and top-lock models are self-explanatory. Bayonet-style clips are a single straight bar of steel with a hole for the wiper tab to click into. Slim-top clips share a similar design. Pinch-tabs hold tightly to the wiper blade.

Most wipers you purchase in auto parts stores will come with various adaptors that work for any or all of these clip types. Some makes and models may have a specific kind of wiper clip you can only get from the dealership, but in most cases, you won’t have to go further than your local AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts to get some new wiper blades.

How Long Do Wiper Blades Last?

The lifespan of windshield wiper blades, or squeegees, is anywhere from six to 12 months, depending on where you live and how often you drive your car. When they need replacing, order a set of blades online. Most blades deteriorate at the same rate, regardless of how much you pay, so look for a cheap set that’ll fit your wipers.

Ask an auto parts store for the proper fit if you’re having trouble choosing the right size. A mechanic will also be able to tell you whether or not the blades need replacing if you’re having any doubts.

How to Remove and Install Windshield Wiper Blades

However, in most cases, replacing the entire wiper blade will be the easiest option. It’s surprisingly easy to get wiper blades off. When you find the best fit, follow the steps below to remove your old blades and install the new ones:

  1. Raise the wipers so they hang above the windshield without touching the glass.
  2. Use a flathead screwdriver to depress the clip underneath the wiper and remove the blade. If there is no clip, look for a hook-slot or pin-type connector and either press or pull it to release the blades.
  3. Next, install the new blade. This process will once again depend on which fastener or connector you have. However, most models should simply slide right onto the wiper arm.
  4. Pull up on the blade to lock it into place. You should hear a small click. Give it a few gentle tugs to ensure it’s secure before laying the wipers back down on your windshield.
  5. Last but not least, refill your windshield wiper fluid so your brand-new blades can go to town on that grimey glass. If your vehicle has a rear wiper, you may have to add more liquid to its reservoir, too. Check both containers every week or so to ensure you don’t run out.

If you can’t find replacement blades, you may be able to replace the rubber insert instead. These inserts are the only part of the blade that comes into contact with the windshield. Replacing the inserts is easy. They come in a pack of two and are one-size-fits-all, so all you need to do is remove the old inserts, place the new ones and cut them down to size. It’s quick, easy and often more cost-effective than replacing the whole wiper assembly.

How to Change Your Windshield Wipers’ Arms

When your wiper blades do need replacing, inspect the windshield wiper arms as well. Are they showing signs of wear and tear? Take your car for a quick test drive. If the wipers sputter, make a squeaking or grinding noise, leave streaks or barely touch the windshield, you may have to shell out a little more cash for entirely new windshield wipers.

Don’t worry! They’re not that much more expensive than the blades. In fact, you might save money in the long run by simply purchasing them together.

When you’re ready to complete the installation, follow these steps:

  1. First, lift the wipers and place a piece of cardboard under them to protect the glass.
  2. Remove bolt-on wipers by unscrewing the nut that attaches them to the drive arm. If you have clip on wipers, simply release the clip. Spring-loaded wipers require you to press a pin to release them from the arm.
  3. Pull the wiper arms from their post and set them aside.
  4. Use a small wire brush to scrub off any rust and debris from threaded posts and apply a drop of oil to the threads.
  5. Align the new wipers with the attachment point on each post. Slide, tap, press or pull it into place.
  6. If you have an older vehicle, you may have to secure the wiper arm to the base, which you can find under the hood. Use a socket wrench to twist and tighten the nut back onto the drive post before replacing the cover.

Driving with Confidence and a Clean Windshield

You’ve just spent all this time learning how to change your windshield wiper blades or perhaps even the wipers themselves. The last thing you want now is to get in the car, turn on your wipers and have them go flying off onto the road. Even if you’re driving at slow speeds, you could put yourself and other drivers in danger in this worst-case scenario.

That’s why you should test your windshield wipers and blades before hitting the open road. If it’s raining, sit idle and turn them on to make sure everything works as it should. Otherwise, you can pour some water on your windshield or turn on the sprinkler to give everything a quick test run. Once you get the green light, you can put pedal to the metal and drive with confidence — and a clear view.

Basketball has changed a lot since the days of James Naismith, but it has remained fundamentally the same sport for much of its history. The point guard and center dominated basketball for a long time, but now some say it’s a positionless sport. So, what are the five positions in basketball? Each player has a specified role to fill, and a team can win championships if everybody plays along.

Let’s dive into the five positions in basketball and see how the game has changed.

Basketball team shown in greyscale

The 5 Positions in Basketball – A Quick Overview

Before focusing on each position, let’s first establish the positions in basketball by number. Coaches and players often refer to positions by their numbers instead of their regular names. Here are the five positions in basketball and their corresponding numbers:

  • Point Guard (1)
  • Shooting Guard (2)
  • Small Forward (3)
  • Power Forward (4)
  • Center (5)

This number system serves several purposes. First, it’s more practical to use numbers instead of full names. Coaches can use the numbers to draw up plays during timeouts and call plays on the fly during games. Players may also understand the play calls more easily when using numbers, especially if a player subs in for another. Imagine teaching youth basketball positions and trying to get 10-year-old kids to understand what you’re talking about.

Second, the numbers mirror the heights of the five positions in basketball. On most teams, the guards are the shortest, centers are the tallest and forwards are somewhere in between. This natural order is helpful for new players unfamiliar with each position. If they’re one of the tallest on the team, they know they’re supposed to be a 4 or 5.

However, famous exceptions have occurred throughout the history of basketball. Earvin “Magic” Johnson revolutionized the game as a 6’8” point guard. Charles Barkley excelled at the power forward position despite only being 6’6”.

Third, the numbers are accurate symbols of each position’s role. Point guards are the leaders and primary ball handlers, so #1 is appropriate. Shooting guards are scorers and secondary ball handlers. Small forwards do a little of everything, so they’re right in the middle. Some say small forward is the best position in basketball! Power forwards and centers play similar roles as rebounders and defenders.

Now that you understand the five basketball positions by number and name, it’s time to take a closer look at the unique roles of each one. We’ll go in numerical order from point guards to centers.

1. Point Guard

A point guard in a blue jersey

Point guards are the de facto leaders of the team. Coaches often call them the “floor generals” because of their high basketball IQ. Point guards are responsible for handling the ball, running the offense and controlling the game’s pace. They should be capable scorers, but dribbling and passing are more critical in this position.

The shortest player on the court is often the point guard. Their small stature enables them to become elite ball handlers. It’s not a coincidence that shorter players like Chris Paul, Steph Curry and Kyrie Irving — all point guards — are considered the most incredible ball handlers ever. Taller guys like Magic and Ben Simmons can handle the pill, but their abilities aren’t as natural as those of their shorter counterparts.

The agility and quick thinking required of the position have made it one of the most sought-after positions in basketball, accounting for 22.9% of NBA salaries. They’re willing to dive for loose balls and make the extra pass to the open teammate. Overall, point guards are supposed to be the heart, mind and soul of the basketball team. Think about Marcus Smart for the Boston Celtics and players like him.

2. Shooting Guard

As the name suggests, shooting guards specialize in shooting the ball. They’re often the opposing defense’s worst nightmare. When shooting guards get into a groove, they can single-handedly win games by knocking down jump shot after jump shot. This position is more important than ever now that the 3-point revolution has taken over modern basketball.

The ideal prototype of a shooting guard is none other than Michael Jordan. Shooting from the mid-range was always his biggest strength, but he could dominate the game in different ways. He was also an elite finisher, free throw shooter and defender. Mike also used his size to dominate in the post because the defenders were usually smaller than him. Every shooting guard must master these parts of the game and lead the backcourt in scoring — if not the whole team.

Shooting guards sometimes go by another name — “three and D” players. This nickname comes from their tendency to be excellent two-way players. They can light up the scoreboard with jump shooting and lock down the other team’s best guard on defense. Advanced stats say Derrick White from the Celtics and De’Anthony Melton from the 76ers are the best in the game at threes and defense.

The guard in basketball sometimes plays a combination of both the 1 and 2. For example, Oscar Robertson in the 1960s could shift into either role depending on what was needed for his team. James Harden is a modern example of a combination point and shooting guard. You may wonder what the positions in basketball are for, and coaches will tell you it depends on what the other five guys are on the other side.

3. Small Forward

a small forward dunking in front of a group of onlookers

Small forwards are the Swiss Army knives of a basketball team. They might not be elite at any particular skill. Still, they’re supposed to be above-average at everything — shooting, finishing, passing, dribbling, rebounding and defense. Small forwards need this balanced skill set to fill any role within the offensive or defensive scheme.

So, what is the model small forward in basketball? All threes in basketball should model their games after Lebron James. He’s not a lights-out shooter or amazing ball handler, but he doesn’t have a single weakness in his game. While he needs to work on his free throw, LeBron can score on any defender and fit into any team’s playstyle. His 6’9” 250-pound frame is ideal for the small forward position.

Small forwards have to be gifted athletes to play at a high level. They often have the speed of a point guard and the strength of a power forward. On any given day, you can catch them doing clean high pulls or dumbbell jump squats in the weight room. The best small forwards like LeBron, Kawhi Leonard and Jayson Tatum can guard multiple positions on the opposing team. The small forward’s versatility arguably makes it the best position in basketball.

4. Power Forward

A Denver basketball player dunking

When considering the forward basketball position, you must also discuss the 4. Power forwards are the unsung heroes of the basketball team. Their primary responsibilities are rebounding, defending and scoring from the post area, which means they often take a beating throughout the game. The post position in basketball is the painted area from the free-throw line to the rim, where the biggest and strongest players battle it out.

However, despite this bruising playstyle, power forwards must be decent shooters, passers and ball handlers in the modern era. Rebounding and defense are still the top priorities when playing the post position. Still, the best power forwards can do many other things. They have come in many shapes and sizes over the years.

In the early days, the power forwards were extensions of the center basketball positions. Jerry Lucas, Bob Pettit and Elvin Hayes dominated the glass and put up double-doubles every night because they played similarly to a center.

As you move into the ‘80s and ‘90s, prototypical power forwards like Tim Duncan and Karl Malone used their physicality to dominate the game from the post and the mid-range game. Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki were skinnier and added more scoring finesse to the position.

In the last decade, the power forward basketball position has shifted to a slightly taller small forward. Many of these players are pure 3-point shooters and have moved their games to the perimeter to allow more space for their guards to move around. Steve Novak and Ryan Anderson are a couple of power forwards who made their living at the 3-point line.

In any case, power forwards must be powerful and durable to handle the position’s responsibilities. Look no further than Giannis Antetokounmpo. Other power forwards are more skilled, but Giannis is the best because nobody can control his strength and athleticism around the rim on offense or defense. Well, Al Horford has done a pretty good job the past few years.

5. Center

Centers are the tallest players on the court, so their primary responsibilities are rebounding, controlling the paint on both ends and stopping the other team’s tallest player. They like to hang around the post position, similar to power forwards. Thanks to their unmatched size, centers usually have limited roles and skill sets but can still dominate the game.

Bill Russell was the original center prototype in the 1960s as the best defender and rebounder in the NBA. Wilt Chamberlain was his friend and nemesis, standing at 7’1” and 275 lbs. Back then, centers had to be large trees in the forest known as basketball. The gigantic size has remained consistent through the decades, with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Shaquille O’Neal and David Robinson dominating the paint.

For generations, basketball teams revolved their game plan around the center and let them be their leading scorer. That’s why people arguing about the best basketball players often have Chamberlain, Russell, O’Neal and Abdul-Jabbar on their all-time list. However, you must also consider how today’s big guys are revolutionizing the sport as we know it.

two basketball players facing off

Today’s best centers are changing basketball forever. They’re still seven-footers who primarily control the game from the post position, but now they’re learning to shoot, pass and dribble like smaller players. Nikola Jokić is effectively a point guard in a center’s body. Joel Embiid can take over a game with his jump shooting. Victor Wembanyama is 7’5” and can score from anywhere on the court, whether you throw him a lob or let him shoot from the half-court logo.

Honorable Mention: 6th Man

As an honorable mention, every team needs a reliable sixth man. These players are the first to come off the bench during the game. Any of the five positions in basketball can fill the sixth-man role. Still, they tend to be shooting guards or small forwards because of their versatility. Coaches should be able to insert the sixth man into the starting lineup if necessary.

The best sixth men in NBA history look quite different, but they’re all capable of leading the team. Manu Ginobili and Vinnie Johnson could run the offense while the starters rested. Ricky Pierce and Jamal Crawford could be the team’s best scorers on any given night. Every basketball team at every level must have at least one skilled player coming off the bench.

Playing the Best Position in Basketball

If only Naismith could watch a game of 21st-century basketball. The game has dramatically changed since he died in 1939, but he’d appreciate the beautiful sports craft surrounding the orange ball. If you’re wondering what the positions in basketball are, refer to this guide for a comprehensive walkthrough.

What do you think is the best position in basketball? Each position has contributed to all-time great players, so it boils down to your preference and what you value on the court. Small forwards like LeBron, Durant and Larry Bird have incredible skills, but you can’t overlook any of the other four positions.

Lighthouse Keepers: Are They Still Hiring in 2024? https://modded.com/lifestyle/lighthouse-keepers-are-they-still-hiring/ https://modded.com/lifestyle/lighthouse-keepers-are-they-still-hiring/#respond Thu, 15 Feb 2024 20:50:29 +0000 https://modded.com/?p=9521 ZipRecruiter says the national average for this position is nearly $24 per hour or a yearly salary edging $50,000. What about the lighthouse job in California? That job pays about $140,000 annually, which you’ll need in the Bay Area.

Lighthouses became prominent in the 19th century, guiding ships to safety as they navigated treacherous waterways. These tall towers didn’t operate independently — they had lighthouse keepers maintaining the structure and keeping the lights on. Now, it’s the 21st century. Is there anybody still hiring a lighthouse keeper? How can you get a job? What are the pros and cons of this career? Here’s everything you need to know about being a lighthouse keeper.

Are Lighthouse Keepers Still Getting Jobs?

Albion Lighthouse in Mauritius rests under sunny skies.

Yes, you can still get a lighthouse keeper job in 2024. The demand in 2024 is lower than in 1924, but some jobs open up from time to time. For example, the Canadian government is hiring an assistant lightkeeper in British Columbia — think about the West Coast where Vancouver is. The job requires a Restricted Operators certificate and a Canadian residency. You’ll also need knowledge of operating mechanical and electrical equipment.

Do you know any lighthouse keepers in the United States? In December of 2022, the East Brother Light Station announced hiring two lighthouse keepers to upkeep the light station near Point San Pablo. Applicants must have a U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license, so you can’t have any average person applying for the job.

What Duties Do Lighthouse Keepers Have?

So, what do lighthouse keepers do daily? The job entails more than sitting in a chair and watching the lights go by. Here are some typical duties you’ll have as a lighthouse keeper.

Upkeep the Lighthouse

The first duty is maintaining the lighthouse— the lights and the tower itself. Seeing in the dark can be difficult for the boats at sea, so the lighthouse keepers must ensure the light shines as brightly as possible. Lives are on the line with people at sea, so the employees must do a superb job of cleaning daily. Plus, they had to be attentive at all times. In 19th-century Michigan, you could get fired for being intoxicated on the job.

The last thing you want is more interview prep, so ensure you’re fully aware of what’s happening.

Watching the Weather

When you’re watching ships go by, what’s the most danger the crew members could be in? Bad weather is the last thing you want to see, and lighthouse keepers must help boats when the weather is treacherous. During lousy conditions, you’ll have to report your weather readings to the National Weather Service, which sends warnings and advisories to the people at sea. From your vantage point, you’ll see hazards and other obstacles boats will face in your view.

Finding People in Distress

The weather at sea can get just as bad as it does on land. For example, you may see a tornadic waterspout or a water tornado. This phenomenon occurs when a tornado forms over water or transitions from the land to the sea. Like land tornadoes, these systems carry lightning, hail and strong winds.

When the storms strike, there may be people in distress. Who is the first person available to help? It’s the lighthouse keepers. These workers help search and rescue missions by directing emergency vessels toward the accident. They may report sightings and provide other assistance to the Coast Guard.

Hosting Visitors

Why so serious? The lighthouse keeper’s job isn’t always full of crises. Sometimes, you can relax and have a little bit more fun. One of the lighthearted duties of lighthouse keepers is hosting visitors. The spring and summer bring warmer weather and people to the coast. Have you ever taken a long road trip to the beach? Part of your job may include giving tours and teaching guests about the lighthouse’s history.

Perks of Being a Lighthouse Keeper

Being a lighthouse keeper isn’t the most conventional job, but it’s rewarding with these four benefits.

Decent Wages

Lighthouse keepers don’t make the same amount of money as a doctor or a lawyer, but there is a decent job market. The position has specific qualifications only a handful of people can fulfill, helping you earn a living wage. Plus, the economy doesn’t significantly affect the job, making it a recession-proof position.

ZipRecruiter says the national average for this position is over $24 per hour or a yearly salary edging $50,000. What about the lighthouse job in California? That job pays about $140,000 annually, which you’ll need in the Bay Area.

Location

In the age of remote work, many employees are going just about anywhere to get the job done. Some even work on the beach, watching the waves in the background. What if you could make the Pacific or Atlantic Coast your worksite daily? Lighthouses often provide spectacular ocean views, making just about anybody jealous of your office with a view.

Quietness

Pigeon Point Lighthouse in California during overcast weather

Do you like to work by yourself? Some people enjoy working in solitude as the hours pass by. Lighthouse keepers generally work by themselves for long stretches of the day. You may interact with other workers if the lighthouse has staff and boats needing assistance. Plus, you may have to give tours. Other than that, maintaining the lighthouse lets you be a lone wolf.

Learning Skills

Being a lighthouse keeper is rewarding because you get to learn new skills. For example, you’ll hone your craft with electrical work while keeping the lights on. How good are your navigational skills? You must be able to read maps and help boats as they’re out in the water. Lighthouse keepers typically work with advanced GPS systems to identify those in the ocean. Plus, you’ll need great search and rescue skills if you find someone in distress.

Challenges for Lighthouse Keepers

Lighthouse keepers have a rewarding job, but it’s not without challenges. The position comes with these four drawbacks.

Isolation

Quietness is a pro for some people. However, others enjoy constant interaction with others and a fast-paced environment. Life as a lighthouse keeper can quickly become quiet and boring for some. If you thrive on social interaction with co-workers and customers, there may be a better job than working in a lighthouse.

Remote Location

The coastlines provide postcard-worthy images for your Christmas cards. However, they can be pretty remote. Many lighthouses are in isolated places far away from the cities. You can live in a small-to-medium town and still drive an hour or more to work. Some people enjoy the drive and living in a small town, whereas others like being in the city. Remote locations can be a turnoff.

Dangers

The Ploumanac'h Lighthouse in Perros-Guirec, France, on an overcast day.

Most days provide a calm and tranquil environment, but the job does provide some dangers. The conditions can especially be harmful when there’s lousy weather. You can’t call out and stay home when there are thunderstorms — you’re expected to stay and help those in the water. Also, you need to be comfortable with heights because lighthouses can be pretty tall when overlooking the ocean.

Lack of Advancement

The highest heights you’ll climb in your career are the stairs going up the ladder in your lighthouse. The room for career advancement isn’t necessarily strong for a lighthouse keeper, so this job is assuredly one for those with a passion. You need to love lighthouses more than you like being a CEO.

Lighthouse Keepers Paradise

We have plenty of teachers, doctors and lawyers in the country. While these professions are fantastic, we still need people to fill the odd jobs. One of those niche careers you can undertake is maintaining a lighthouse. Lighthouse keepers aren’t in demand like 100 years ago, but jobs in this field are still available. If you’re considering this career, check out these pros and cons to see what the job is like.

While some people haven’t considered this before, others might be wondering constantly: Why do people cover license plates in photos? There are two reasons. You either want to protect your privacy or avoid incriminating yourself.

So many people do it nowadays, that it almost seems like the most logical solution if you’re posting a photo of your car. From those selling their cars to those looking to purchase, to car enthusiasts who see snapshots of cars online all day long, you’re probably familiar with people taking this approach with their car situation.

No matter your inclination, it’s always best to be sure about your safety and security when you’re posting photos or searching around. Even if you haven’t wondered about this before, checking in on the details and why some people choose to cover it up can help you feel more secure in your choices and move on.

While it might feel like the right thing to do — with the emphasis we have in our society on protecting our personal information — it might actually be a bit less necessary than you might think. Here’s a bit more about why people cover their license plates in photos, and if that’s really necessary.

A closeup of a classic car grille with the license plate just offscreen

How and Why People Cover License Plates

When people are selling a car online, especially in a public venue like Facebook Marketplace and Craigslist, the sellers often cover their license plates. The most common method is sticking their hand or finger in front of the camera to cover the license plate, but there have been other creative entries.

For instance, a few drivers add a towel, tape or a fake plate as a cover. Some resort to blurring the actual license plate or adding a sticker in photo editing. There’s even a Batman-like license plate cover. This product lets you remotely activate a screen that hides the numbers and letter identifiers of the plate.

The same practices are also implemented for those who like to post pictures of their car on social media. Especially for those who own expensive cars or cars they’ve put a lot of effort into, it’s understandable that they want to share their pride and joy. But consequently, sharing this personal information can spark a couple of worries.

Common Reasons People Cover License Plates

  • Vandalism: Posting the license plate makes your car much more identifiable. If someone had a bone to pick with you and they spot your automobile in public, they may just resort to taking out their frustrations on your car.
  • Theft: Thieves look at rare and coveted car models as an opportunity to make money. With your license plate, they now know that the car is associated with you. While the chances of being targeted are low, they are not zero.
  • Identity Theft: License plates are considered a key to your personal identity since you register your vehicle with a license, the car title, and other important documents. There is a possibility that strangers who would want to steal your identity would start with your vehicle registration plate.
  • Doxxing: While people may not use your license plate as a way to steal your identity, they may turn it into a jumping point to exposing who you are. People may decide to dox or publicly publish your private information with malicious intent. This can happen even if you try to maintain your anonymity online.

Is It Necessary to Hide Your License Plates?

With various troubles in mind, it makes sense to cover up any personal information that might be visible in your shot. This includes your license plate number, right? Well, not exactly.

While this choice might seem like a good idea at first, it actually isn’t necessary. Think about it this way — if you saw a photo of a car, were able to see the license plate and wanted to find the specific car or person who owned it, would you be able to? The answer is — for the most part — no! This is actually because of the Driver’s Privacy Protection Act, from all the way back in 1994.

This act essentially makes it illegal for motor vehicle departments to disclose any personal information they’ve gathered. This means that unless you work for a police department or the DMV — and hold a specific position in one of those institutions — you can’t find so much as someone’s name based on their license plate number.

And even if you are able to view personal information from a high position, the DPPA still limits the use of motor vehicle records. Even the release still requires explicit permission from the owner of the vehicle.

A 350 SLC with a shown license plate

Out and About

Now that we’ve established the protections in place for drivers and their personal information, the time has come to bring up an important point. Even if you are still wary of posting photos of your car and license plate on social media, there’s a time and situation when everyone around you can see your car and your license plate in plain view — whenever you’re outside and driving your car.

While, of course, people who see you driving don’t necessarily know who you are and understand your presence associated with your car, people can still see you and read your license plate number if they want to. If nothing bad has happened from that, it stands to reason your car will be okay on the internet.

Maybe, If You’re Famous…

That being said, there are some people who might feel safer if they protect as much of their information as possible. For example, it’s highly unlikely that posting a photo of your car on your private Facebook page for 500 friends will lead you to a crisis. However, if you’re genuinely a celebrity, a YouTube star or a social media personality with lots of followers, it might be in your best interest to cover up if that makes you feel most comfortable.

That being said, even popular channels like Regular Car Reviews don’t bother to cover up license plate numbers, and they’re experts on the matter with a large following. Really, it’s up to you about what makes you most comfortable.

A collection of various state license plates

But Is It Legal?

It’s important to check the law in your local area to see whether your license plate covers are legal or not. For example, in Pennsylvania, it is unlawful to obscure a registration plate with a tinted cover. This is because the state employs a toll-by-plate system and the cover can make it difficult to record the details of a license plate. People who commit this offense need to pay a fine of $100.

And remember that license plate cover that seems like it came straight out of Gotham City? Despite their popularity, these gadgets are illegal in California and other parts of the U.S. Aside from bypassing toll collection, certain variations of this gadget can also cause road distractions for drivers. For instance, when the material reflects off light and causes flashes.

The regulations can vary from state to state, banning license plate covers for their use on the roads. Putting them on for photographs should be harmless enough. However, removing them after is certainly something to keep in mind before you pull out of the garage.

Cover Up Or Leave It Be?

Really, as a regular person, you’ll likely never have to worry about your information being found or stolen through your license plate number. While you should do whatever makes you feel most comfortable, be sure to check on the regulations in your area. Try to relax a little bit, too.

People listen to all kinds of music in the gym. We can’t definitively say one gym music genre is more beneficial than the other, because music is highly subjective. We all have unique tastes. However, that doesn’t mean we can’t have strong opinions. These are the seven best workout music genres that will get you fired up and dialed in for your next training session.

What We Look For in Workout Music

Regardless of our taste in music, most of us look for the same qualities when creating our workout playlists:

  • Fast-paced songs
  • Heavy bass
  • Passionate and/or explicit lyrics
  • Timely beat drops

The sex of the vocalist also plays a role. Male and female singers can be equally passionate or explicit, but male voices have a wider range and thus dominate most of the genres we will discuss.

Now that we’ve established some prerequisites, let’s get into the seven best workout music genres for all listeners.

1. Rap

Rap is the most fitting genre for workout music, embodying all of the qualities mentioned above. The songs have quick beats and runtimes with noticeable baselines, getting our heart rates up. The prevalence of drums and other percussion instruments also helps us get into a rhythm, which can help with certain exercises.

Rap songs tend to be vulgar and provocative, with topics about drugs, sex and violence. Yes, they might be inappropriate and offensive, but they help us tap into our primal instincts. The vast majority of rap artists are also males, which makes the lyrics sound that much more intense. The song’s message might not always be positive, but rap leads to positive results in the gym.

2. EDM

Electronic dance music (EDM) has an even faster pace than most rap songs, with some deafening baselines to boot. This high-energy music will get your heart pumping faster than any other genre.

The only downside is that some songs have hectic and unpredictable melodies, which can make it more difficult for you to get into a rhythm. However, EDM makes up for its chaotic nature by having some of the most exhilarating bass drops of any genre.

Many EDM songs also don’t have lyrics, but this trait usually works in the genre’s favor. With so many moving parts in the song, sometimes it’s better to remove the lyrics and allow the listener to focus on the instruments.

3. Pop

Pop is the most popular music genre in the world right now, but that’s not why it made the list. The music is upbeat and catchy, so it’s easy to listen to in the gym. You can just zone out and let the songs envelop you.

The lyrics to pop music also tend to have positive messages, helping to motivate and inspire people to power through a tough workout. The pop songs that don’t have positive lyrics are usually about romantic troubles, which can be even more motivational if you’re going through a rough patch in your love life.

4. Hard Rock

Hard rock is the best workout music in the overall rock genre. It combines classic rock, blues, heavy metal and pieces of other genres into a blissfully intense sound that’s perfect for the gym. It can be a difficult genre to define at times, but you know it when you hear it. The bands range from Led Zeppelin to Slipknot, with the same gritty sound existing across the spectrum.

Hard rock lyrics also tend to have some dark themes, such as war and depression. These morbid topics make for great emotional fuel in the gym. If you’re getting ready for a heavy set, hard rock is the genre you want.

5. Classic Rock

Classic rock is a notch below hard rock in terms of intensity, but the genre’s passion and artistry is on a whole different level. Many people say the best time period for music was the 70s and 80s when classic rock was by far the most popular genre. It continues to resonate with people, which is why it remains the most popular radio genre.

Another reason classic rock is one of the best workout music genres is the familiarity. There are too many hit songs to count. Having some familiar songs in your workout playlist helps you focus on the task at hand.

6. Heavy Metal

If you’re looking for something deafening and incoherent, heavy metal is the genre for you. It’s the loudest music genre on the list and the lyrics are often incomprehensible, but that’s the idea. The music is supposed to be edgy, boisterous and rebellious. These strong emotions can boost your performance in the gym, even if you don’t understand the lyrics.

7. R&B

R&B is quite different from the other genres on the list. It’s not particularly fast or upbeat, and there aren’t any notable bass drops. So what makes R&B one of the best workout music genres? The rhythm. No genre is as smooth and charismatic as R&B. It will have you dancing and singing in the middle of the gym. It’s also highly romantic, as a bonus.

Update Your Gym Music Playlist

Your workout playlist probably has a fair share of rap, pop and rock songs. Don’t forget about the other genres though! Ultimately, your gym music genre choice will come down to personal taste. Explore new sounds and constantly update your playlist so you always have something new to listen to in the gym.

Are you fully equipped with DIY mechanic tools? When most people set up their garage, their minds gravitate towards accessories like toolboxes, work benches, and air compressors. However, there are a number of other beneficial and convenient DIY mechanic tools most overlook.

Whether you’re building a project car for the track or simply like to do your own work on your daily driver, all DIY mechanics can agree that a proper garage set-up is important. The garage is a sanctuary for everything automotive. If you’ve ever spent an hour elbow-deep in an engine bay, you know it pays to have the right tools for the job.

Equipping Your Garage

You need more than parts and instructions for the job. You’ve got to have the right tools too. They might seem expensive at first. However, it’s worth it, considering the right tools can prevent injury and save you money in the long run.

Begin with the basics. You won’t be performing body-off restorations in your garage on day one. So put a pause on buying extremely specialized tools. Get a quality workbench, a tool chest and some wall mounts to keep things organized, and ensure you seal your floor so it’s ready to get dirty.

Ensure You Have Proper Lighting

What’s the first thing you do when you walk into the garage? Flip on the light switch. When it comes to garage work, lighting is essential whether you’re working on your car or any other DIY project for the house. If the light is too dim or there are too many shadows, mistakes can be made, and mistakes can be costly (not to mention, painful).

Most garage light fixtures have a standard pair of fluorescent tube lights. While fluorescents can be good, LEDs have proven to be the future. This is because they are energy efficient and have impressive brightness and directional lighting. Simply replacing your current fluorescents with LEDs can do a number to improve visibility. Adding another fixture or two? That will really transform your image while working.

Pro tip: If you do plan to add more fixtures to your current lighting setup, install them over areas you know you’ll be working on often. A light fixture over a workbench can provide so much light and it makes working on small parts much, much easier.

Microfiber Towels to Clean Your Car

Like most people, you may turn to old bath towels or beat-up T-shirts when you need a new shop rag. While these materials can handle their basic purpose, they have nothing on the cleaning efficiency of microfiber towels. Microfiber is a synthetic material with smaller and denser fibers than other common cleaning materials like cotton or nylon. These fibers can pick up even the smallest particles, which effectively cleans dirt or grease. In addition, microfiber towels are absorbent, light weight, and lint-free which is why they’ve become the preferred detailer’s towel. If you want to protect your car from scratches and water stains, use microfiber towels.

And the best part? Microfiber towels are a heck of a bang for your buck. You can buy a pack of a dozen online or from your local auto parts store for less than $20. Most of them are good for roughly 500 wash cycles. So it’ll be years before you need to invest in another set.

A Pegboard to Organize Your Tools

Everyone has at least one disorganized spot in the garage. Maybe you filled up a small drawer with oddly shaped tools. Or a big bin with stuff that wouldn’t fit in anywhere else. This is where pegboards come in handy. Pegboards are a tool organization lifesaver. They also help you free up precious floor space by using empty wall space.

Pegboards are available in plenty of sizes and styles. There are also unique hangers available for nearly every type of tool or product, from hammers and rakes to step stools and hoses. If you have the time and like custom jobs, you can even make your own. There are dozens of DIY guides to follow online, and it’s a relatively easy job to follow even for beginners.

The Essential DIY Mechanic Tools

Once you have the beginnings of an organized garage in place, it’s time to treat yourself to the mechanic’s bread-and-butter toolset with essential tools like a screwdriver set , a drop light and a good set of sockets and drivers. Cars use different types of fasteners from those you see in drywall. This means you may need to invest in specialized sockets and drivers for the task.

There are a few specialized tools you might not think of if you’re new to DIY. For example, a torque wrench is essential for working on cars because it has a readout to indicate how much twisting force you are applying to a fastener. Additionally, an air compressor can be valuable for driving tools and helping speed up your work.

You’ll also want to have a few things on hand specific to your car. This means having an extra change of oil and filter around, replacement light bulbs and a spare battery. You will thank yourself in future when you need them, particularly the battery. Give yourself enough time to find good deals on these wear parts to make the most out of your money.

Last but not least, a service manual for your vehicle can be a lifesaver. Especially if you find yourself in over your head. You can purchase these from third-party authors or your car’s manufacturer.

Power Supplies

Every garage has a few power outlets built into its walls, just like any other room in the house. However, compared to a kitchen or living room, things like lighting, tools and chargers require more power in the garage. A standard set of wall outlets can be limited both in number and location.

Pick up a few power strips and extension cords to increase your outlet count tenfold. While you have enough now, you will inevitably need more in the future. No doubt you’ve had moments where you needed to plug something in but every outlet was taken. Or, you needed power in a specific spot but the nearest outlet was 10 feet away. The next time you have one of those moments, you’ll be happy you have extra power supplies on hand.

Pro tip: When shopping for power supplies for use in the garage, try find products with metal casings. Metal casings as are much more durable than the average plastic power strip. Additionally, look for products with surge protection to prevent your gear from potential damage caused by unexpected power spikes.

Safety Gear

Many people forego safety gear. Some do it because they think it’s unnecessary for the job they’re doing, others do it to put on a “tough” act. However, no matter what the job, when you walk into the garage to work, leave your ego at the door. It’s important to protect yourself and have good safety habits.

Proper safety starts with the basics like wearing hand and eye protection while working. You also want to keep the first aid kit and fire extinguisher in close proximity. No one can predict when an accident is going to occur – but if one does, you’ll want all the necessary safety gear to prevent injury to yourself or damage to your house.

Top-Shelf or Bargain Basement?

As a new mechanic, you might be curious about how much to spend on tools. You can find DIY mechanic tools at a multitude of different price points, but is there any value in paying more?

As with most things, you get what you pay for when it comes to tools. It’s wise to skip the absolute cheapest tools you find because they can break easily or need replacement more often. You can also rule out expensive professional-grade tools too since they might have unnecessary features or standards higher than your applications require. Every tool is different, so read reviews and ask your friends for recommendations.

A good set of tools will last a long time if you use them properly, so take good care of them and expect others to do the same.

Fixing up cars is a lot of fun and saves you money on trips to the mechanic. It may even become a source of income in the future. For ultimate success you need the right tools. You also need to know how take care of them once you have them. Doing so will help ensure your projects go smoothly, keep you safe and help you produce quality results.

Get These DIY Mechanic Tools

A garage is always a work in progress. There are always more tools to add to make your work easier, faster, or better. While a new power tool set may seem attractive, make sure you’ve got the essentials in place before you start the upgrades. As you’ve probably heard most of your life, it’s the littlest things that make the biggest difference. Start with these DIY mechanic tools!

Imagine you get home after work and turn on the news. The first story you see is about an automaker recalling thousands of vehicles, including the one you just parked in the garage. You can’t believe the auto manufacturer you trusted would endanger you and all the other owners worldwide. Unfortunately, accidents happen in the manufacturing process and cause recalls. What are the biggest car recalls in history? These 12 stand out as the most significant.

1. General Motors Recalls 3.7 Million Cars in 1973

Let’s start in 1973. General Motors (GM) recalled 3.7 million vehicles in its fleet due to faulty stone-guard assembly. The assembly that was supposed to prevent stones from bouncing up and getting lodged in the car’s undercarriage didn’t work correctly — stones could get caught so that it prevented the car from turning to the left. Unfortunately, vehicles under the GM umbrella didn’t have the proper assembly.

Fortunately, this recall was one of the most straightforward fixes. GM retrofitted its Buick, Chevy, Oldsmobile and Pontiac cars with a bolt-on stone guard. That’s all it took to get these bad boys back on the road.

2. Tesla Recalls 4.1 Million Vehicles in 2022

Tesla - biggest car recalls in history

Tesla is a relative newcomer to the automotive industry, debuting on the world stage in 2008. Since then, the electric vehicle (EV) producer has encountered problems and recalls. In early 2023, the California-based company announced a 360,000-vehicle recall — bringing their total since 2022 to 4.1 million. Tesla ranks second only behind Ford with the most recalls in this span.

So, what’s with the Tesla recalls? The primary problems have originated with the self-driving system. The cars will not entirely stop at stop signs like they’re supposed to, and they keep driving straight in turn-only lanes. These problems have caused doubt about autonomous vehicles and made existing cars unsafe. Tesla and the other automakers must improve these features, or you’ll never see fully autonomous cars on the road.

3. Ford Recalls 4.1 Million Cars in 1972

Can you imagine a time when seatbelts weren’t mandatory? Nowadays, most drivers fasten their seatbelts as a force of habit. You don’t even think about this in your automotive routine. If you’re curious, ask your grandparents or other seniors in the community about this phenomenon.

A half-century ago, seatbelts were less standard, making cars less safe. The government mandated seatbelts in 1959, and Ford only took a decade to find trouble with theirs. By 1972, the blue oval automaker found faulty seatbelts when its vehicles got into accidents. One problem was that the seatbelts were too short, thus making it difficult for larger individuals to use them.

Ultimately, Ford replaced all the faulty seatbelts and paid a fine. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) fined Ford $95,000 — the 21st-century equivalent of about $500,000.

4. GM Recalls 6.4 Million Cars in 1981

GM appeared on the list once, and the recalls only get larger from here. In 1981, the auto-manufacturing giant recalled over 6 million vehicles because their rear suspension bolt was faulty. Inspectors found the bolt rusted more easily than acceptable, forcing the rear control arms to drop to the ground. Rust is unsuitable for your car unless you intentionally let your rat rod truck corrode for a particular aesthetic.

Unfortunately, losing the rear suspension bolt caused cars to spin out of control. The only time you need spinning is to do burnouts after winning a NASCAR race. Twenty-seven drivers reported accidents stemming from this recall, prompting quick fixes from the automaker.

5. GM Recalls 6.7 Million Cars in 1971

GM had severe problems a decade before — this time with the motor mount. Imagine you cranked the engine while your car sits in the driveway. Your vehicle shouldn’t move until you shift gears and press the accelerator. However, GM owners found the car moved independently when the motor mount broke, causing the engine to life. The throttle became stuck open, causing the vehicle to accelerate by itself.

GM had to recall nearly 7 million vehicles, the largest automobile recall at the time. The recall affected Chevrolets specifically, with the NHTSA finding 63 accidents and 18 injuries with the cars.

6. Toyota Recalls 7.4 Million Cars in 2012

In the fall of 2012, Americans were focused on the presidential election and Toyota’s major recall. This Japanese automaker typically has safe cars. In fact, Consumer Reports ranks Toyota and Lexus as the most reliable automakers in the world. However, Toyota ran into problems with its power window switches.

Over 7 million Toyota vehicles with power windows had faulty switches that could catch fire. Cars generally work better when not on fire, so Toyota recalled millions of units worldwide.

7. Ford Recalls 7.9 Million Cars in 1996

Another Ford recall makes its way on the list from the 1996 event. Nearly 30 years ago, Ford recalled its vehicles and units from Lincoln and Mercury between 1988 and 1993. This time, the ignition switch was the culprit. The electronics in the switch were faulty, causing overheating and dashboard fires. Fires are dangerous anyway, but being this close to the driver is a significant liability.

The recall was massive, affecting nearly 8 million vehicles across three brands. However, the worst part of the recall was Ford knew about the ignition switch issue about five years before formally declaring a recall.

8. Volkswagen Recalls 8.5 Million Cars in 2016

Volkswagen - biggest car recalls in history

Now, we’re at one of the biggest car recalls in history because it harmed the automaker’s reputation. In the 2010s, automakers began amping emissions testing to ensure the cars followed government regulations. New laws have forced strict rules on auto manufacturers to reduce their environmental impact. However, some people thought they could get away with cheating.

In 2016, Volkswagen recalled more than 8 million vehicles because they manipulated the emissions control systems in diesel engines. These machines would pass the emissions test by providing inaccurate data. Thus, the cars emitted more than they were supposed to. To this day, gearheads still remember Volkswagen’s manipulation and how they cheated the auto industry.

9. Toyota Recalls 9 Million Cars in 2010

Toyota reappears on this list with an even bigger recall than the 2012 incident. In 2010, Americans and the rest of the world were still reeling because of the Great Recession. The last thing they needed was to hear about problems with their vehicles, but a faulty gas pedal caused significant Toyota recalls worldwide.

Toyota and Lexus initially blamed the floor mats for their vehicles accelerating out of control, only to find the gas pedal was the culprit. This event was one of the biggest car recalls in history because of the death toll. Reports indicate 89 people died, and 57 suffered injuries due to the acceleration issues.

10. Ford Recalls 17.5 Million Cars Between 1999 and 2009

If you’re looking to save gas, one of your best options is to utilize cruise control. This system keeps your vehicle moving steadily, reducing the need to accelerate and decelerate on the highway. Therefore, your engine works effortlessly and consumes less fuel. Ford drivers took advantage of this in the late ’90s and early 2000s until a recall stopped cars in their tracks.

During this time, Ford owners started reporting their steering wheels catching fire. You’d expect a hot steering wheel in the summer heat, but not enough to create flames. Once your steering wheel catches fire, the trail could lead to other critical parts of your machine. The last thing you want is an explosion causing severe harm or even death.

11. Ford Recalls 21 Million Cars in 1980

“The Suite Life of Zack and Cody” made transmissions easier for younger audiences to remember. PRNDL stands for park, reverse, neutral, drive and low. When you put a car in park, you expect the vehicle to remain still. However, a Ford recall in 1980 occurred because cars were reversing instead of parking. This simple misunderstanding could be dangerous when in parking lots or any road.

The culprit here was a faulty transmission. The gearshift has pieces separating the park and reverse options, but the component could slip. Thus, the car thinks it’s supposed to reverse when the operator wants to park. Ford saved money on its recall costs by placing a safety label on the dashboard, warning drivers of mishaps.

12. Takata Recalls 65 Million Cars Since 2013

Now, you can see the biggest car recalls in history that are still going on. While they’re not an automotive company, the Takata Corporation made automotive parts for household names in the industry. Ford, Toyota, Nissan, BMW and other giants relied on Takata airbags because complaints said these components ruptured and injured drivers. Original reports set the recall at around 42 million vehicles, but that number has only grown in the last decade.

Cars are essential for many people’s daily commute. They’re great machines that are fun to drive until something goes wrong. Honest mistakes happen in production, and sometimes, companies try to cheat the system with shady practices. Recalls have happened since Ford’s Model T in the early 20th century, so they’re not new to society. These 12 incidents are the worst in automotive history.
