Mitsubishi is among the world leaders in producing cars, motorcycles, musical instruments and other hobby objects. The Delica is one of their most popular vehicles because it’s great for road trips and outdoor adventures. However, it’s unavailable in the United States. Could the Momentum 2030 initiative finally bring the big machine to America? Here’s your guide to the future of Mitsubishi North America.

What Is the Mitsubishi Delica?

Mitsubishi began Delica production in the late 1960s, following the rise in minibus popularity. These vehicles became prominent because of their versatility for road trips, protests and other cultural movements. While nearly 60 years old, the Delica has received numerous facelifts and upgrades through the years. The machine remains popular with outdoor enthusiasts because it’s durable and great for camping — just not in the United States.

The Japanese manufacturer once produced the Delica in the United States under the Wagon name. Mitsubishi sent Wagons off production lines between 1987 and 1990 before ceasing sales. Why did the automaker build this minibus in America? Mitsubishi tried to take advantage of Chrysler’s minivan success by sending the Delica under a new name. Unfortunately, it didn’t last long due to poor handling and a lack of crash protection.

What Is Mitsubishi Momentum 2030?

Person driving a Mitsubishi car in the daytime

If you long for the Delica’s return, you may be in luck. Auto industry experts say an American rendezvous could be in store for this classic machine. Why are they enthusiastic? Look no further than Mitsubishi Momentum 2030. This renaissance aims to elevate the company as a top automotive manufacturer by introducing more vehicles by the decade’s end. Mitsubishi only has four machines in its lineup, but the Delica could rejoin it.

What else does Mitsubishi Momentum 2030 entail? Mitsubishi wants to establish itself as a leader in sustainable machinery, so expect to see all-electric and hybrid options on dealership lots. These vehicles release zero harmful emissions into the atmosphere, so it makes sense for the automaker to focus on efficient cars. Electric vehicles (EVs) are terrific for the outdoors because they care for the environment more than gas-powered cars.

Will Momentum 2030 Bring the Delica to the States?

Mitsubishi steering wheel picture taken from the backseat

Momentum 2030 should feature new cars and revive older models, so a Delica reboot could be in the cards. An Automotive News report says Mitsubishi wants to bring a passenger van to its American lineup. What will the vehicle look like? While it won’t resemble the 1960s versions, this potentially revamped Mitsubishi Delica appears futuristic. The auto industry got its first look at this van when the company unveiled the D:X concept last fall.

In October 2023, Mitsubishi Motors showed the world its electric crossover with all-wheel control. The automaker didn’t directly name the Delica, but the next model certainly takes inspiration from the older minibus. This multipurpose vehicle (MPV) makes up for the qualities the previous Mitsubishi Delica models lacked. For instance, Mitsubishi prioritizes safety with the D:X by enhancing the body and making it more conducive to off-roading. You also get excellent fenders for improved strength.

What Mitsubishi Cars Can You Drive in the Meantime?

Mitsubishi Momentum 2030 includes plans for the next six years, so it could be a while before all the automobiles come to fruition. What machines can you drive in the meantime? Here are all three vehicles in the current lineup.

Eclipse

A red Mitsubishi Eclipse in a parking lot

When you think of the Eclipse, you probably start thinking about family. This car belongs to Brian O’Conner in the Fast and the Furious movies and is integral to the movie’s lore. O’Conner used it in his first street race, setting up the rest of the franchise for epic competition. Celebrate Paul Walker by driving an Eclipse if you want to commemorate his character. While it was out of the lineup for a while, the Eclipse has returned.

The 2024 Eclipse is now a crossover, as Mitsubishi focuses on the family-friendly side of the vehicle market. Despite having SUV characteristics, the Eclipse packs a punch with its turbocharged engine in the standard package. If you like rally cars, the Eclipse with the RALLIART trim could be up your alley. This edition has an excellent paint scheme with a white diamond finish around the vehicle. The car lets you indulge in luxurious accessories.

Mirage G4

Unfortunately, 2024 is the last year we’ll see the Mirage. Mitsubishi announced last summer it would discontinue the model due to poor sales. The car’s sales dropped 57% compared to 2022, so the automaker will move on to other priorities. In the meantime, we’ll appreciate the car because it’s a terrific machine. Sedans still have a place in the 2020 automotive market, and the Mirage fills the niche better than other cars on dealership lots.

Why does the Mirage stand out? Mitsubishi’s last sedan excels in fuel mileage, boasting 39 miles per gallon (mpg) for superb efficiency. Super fuel economy typically requires hybrid technology, but the Mirage nearly reaches 40 mpg without battery technology. Like other sedans, the Mirage has a low profile to aid its fuel economy. If you want enhanced efficiency, you don’t have to look further than the last Mitsubishi Mirage.

Outlander

We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Mitsubishi’s most popular vehicle. The Outlander is the automaker’s flagship machine, selling over 22,000 cars in the third quarter of 2023. You may wonder why Mitsubishi has two SUVs in its lineup, considering it only has three vehicles. A few differences between the Outlander and the Eclipse Cross are worth mentioning. One may be better for families than the other.

The most significant distinction between the vehicles is the engine displacement. The Outlander has a bigger engine than the Eclipse Cross, thus giving you more horsepower on the open road. Size is another difference, considering the Outlander gives you a little more legroom in the front and back seats. The Eclipse Cross has the upper hand for safety, with a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) compared to four for the Outlander.

Anticipating Momentum 2030 and Next Mitsubishi Delica

The most prominent automakers in the U.S. include Toyota, Ford and General Motors (GM). Mitsubishi wants to use Momentum 2030 to join the elite group of auto manufacturers. How will they do it? The Japanese manufacturer has teased its fans with the D:X prototype built for road trips and off-roading. If everything goes to plan, Mitsubishi will debut new vehicles and overhaul old models for the American market.

Most Reliable 4×4 of All Time: Top 5 Toughest Vehicles for 2024 https://modded.com/cars/most-reliable-4x4-of-all-time/ https://modded.com/cars/most-reliable-4x4-of-all-time/#respond Wed, 22 May 2024 20:48:01 +0000 https://modded.com/?p=9236 What's the most reliable 4x4 of all time? These top five off-road vehicles stand the test of time and trails alike.

The post Most Reliable 4×4 of All Time: Top 5 Toughest Vehicles for 2024 appeared first on Modded.

What’s the most reliable 4×4 SUV of all time? If you’re in the market for an all-terrain vehicle, you’ve got a lot of options. The best 4x4s are durable and designed for rough ground, with 4WD, high ground clearance and enough torque to get out of tough spots. You’ll want to ensure you’re choosing a vehicle that will stand up over time, too.

From vintage off-roaders to cutting-edge models, we’ve compiled a list of the five toughest SUVs of all time.

1. Toyota LandCruiser 70

Toyota LandCruiser 70
  • Ground Clearance: 11 inches (CarsGuide)
  • Average Maintenance Cost: $843 per year (RepairPal)
  • Estimated Maintenance Cost During First 10 Years: $6,782 (CarEdge)

Toyota is known for producing what many consider the best off road SUV of all time — the LandCruiser, notably the 70 Series. Built to take a beating and keep going, this off-roader can navigate some of the most challenging terrains in the world.

Originally manufactured in 1984, the LandCruiser 70 has been in production for decades. There’s a good reason for that, too. It’s utilitarian but incredibly reliable. The modern LandCruiser J70 has a diesel V8 engine and interior tech upgrades — like a digital dashboard. Unfortunately, it’s tricky to find one of these in the U.S. since Toyota never released the 70 series in America, only the 80 series and the older 60 series.
The 2024 LandCruiser 70 will only hit Japanese roads. It won’t appear in North America due to the dreaded Chicken Tax. Uncle Sam imposes a 25% tariff on imported light vehicles, discouraging auto dealers from selling them on American soil. This tax has blighted the likes of Toyota Hilux. The latest LandCruiser 70 is only the latest on the list.

2. Jeep Wrangler

Jeep Wrangler
  • Ground Clearance: 12.9 inches (Jeep)
  • Average Maintenance Cost: $694 per year (RepairPal)
  • Estimated Maintenance Cost During First 10 Years: $10,397 (CarEdge)

When most people think of off-road vehicles, the Jeep Wrangler is one of the first things that comes to mind. Dating back to the original Willys-Overland MB, the Jeep has long been an icon of the 4×4 market. The Jeep Wrangler is the most popular model, known for its stability, versatility and reliability.

If you’re shopping for a good 4×4, it’s always worth considering a Wrangler. They’re not for everyone due to their rollover rate, but they’re often a great place to start.

They come in various 4WD systems and two- and four-door models. Thanks to the Wrangler’s pedigree, most overlanding enthusiasts approve of it. More than 80% of the 5 million Wranglers sold since 1986 are still on the road, so owning one makes you a member of a massive global Jeeper family.

Modifiability is part of the Wrangler’s charm. With abundant aftermarket components available for new and vintage models, you push the boundaries of customization — from adding skid plates to accessorizing with lightbars — to achieve your desired look, performance and functionality.

Keep an eye out for the Jeep Rubicon, as well. The Rubicon is a souped-up version of the standard Wrangler, making it an excellent choice for those who want to tackle particularly hostile terrain.

3. Ford F-150

  • Ground Clearance: 9.8 inches (Ford)
  • Average Maintenance Cost: $788 per year (RepairPal)
  • Estimated Maintenance Cost During First 10 Years: $10,245 (CarEdge)

The Ford F-150 has been America’s top best-selling truck for over 40 years and continues to impress. Not only does it look great, it also handles off-roading like a champ. The F-150’s popularity also makes it easy to find affordable models on the used market and get replacement parts if needed.

It’s worth noting that the F-150’s most dependable off road incarnation is the Raptor. This edition of the F-150 has improved long-travel suspension, a supercharged engine and larger tires that give it an edge over the standard F-150.

Both models suffer a bit from their bulk. If you want to navigate narrow passes in your off-road vehicle, this one’s probably not the way to go.

The F-150’s most unassailable advantage is its hauling capacity. This half-steel, half-aluminum beast of burden can drag a staggering 14,000 pounds max. An SUV that could tow an average African elephant earns it a spot among the toughest SUVs of all time, including the nimble Suzuki Samurai.

This 4×4 can be fuel-hungry, too. Its 2023 model can burn as high as 8.3 gallons per 100 miles, translating to mileages of 15 and 10 on the highway and in the city, respectively.
If you’re environmentally conscious, buy one that takes E85. This 85% ethanol and 15% gas fuel blend won’t help you cover more ground. However, you’ll generate more torque and horsepower, produce zero residue, emit less pollution and help slow down climate change.

4. Toyota Tacoma

  • Ground Clearance: 9.4 inches (CarParts.com)
  • Average Maintenance Cost: $478 per year (RepairPal)
  • Estimated Maintenance Cost During First 10 Years: $6,420 (CarEdge)

The Tacoma is one of Toyota’s most popular off-road-capable trucks alongside the larger Tundra. Both are tough and reliable, but the Tacoma’s smaller size gives it the edge on trails and rough terrain. It’s more maneuverable and better suited for narrow passes than the Tundra.
The Tacoma fills a helpful niche as a mid-sized pickup truck. So, it’s smaller than an F-150 but still gets you a spacious truck bed. You can even add a few modifications to take the Tacoma’s trail performance up a notch. As a Toyota, you can rest assured that this truck will stand the test of time and trails. It’s in the same league as the legendary Toyota LandCruiser and has a solid case for being the most reliable 4×4 SUV of all time, hands down.

5. Suzuki Samurai

  • Ground Clearance: 8.1 inches (Jerry)
  • Average Maintenance Cost: $239 per year (RepairPal)

The Suzuki Samurai is small but quick, light and agile. It fills a niche in the off-road market that’s become increasingly empty over the past few decades. Originally produced between 1985 and 1995, the Samurai remains arguably the most reliable off road SUV ever made. If you can find one on the used market, this classic has the potential to deliver a fantastic performance.

Samurais are particularly good for unique off-roading scenarios — like dunes or narrow trails. Its small size offers tremendous hauling capacity and allows you to take the Samurai virtually anywhere.

As a testament to the Samurai’s endurance, one of its 1986 resto-mods owns the distinction for reaching the highest altitude out of all cars. In 2007, a pair of Chileans named Eduardo Canales and Gonzalo Bravo drove the four-wheel Unimog on the slopes of the dormant Ojos del Salado volcano in the Andes and parked 21,942 above sea level — 138 feet higher than the previous record held by a Jeep Wrangler.

The duo brought down with them a marker the team they beat left. It’s a sign that says, “Jeep parking only—all others don’t make it up here, anyway.” The air might be thin on South America’s second-highest peak, but Canales and Bravo could breathe easy knowing they made history and their Samurai — a battle-tested off-road warrior — did exactly what it says on the tin.

What’s the Most Reliable 4×4 SUV of All Time?

It’s hard to choose just one most reliable 4×4 of all time, but the five vehicles on this list are certainly front-runners. The number one spot is a toss-up between the Toyota LandCruiser 70 and Jeep Wrangler, although there are also a few tough off-road pickup trucks worth checking out.

Ultimately, it depends on what you value. All vehicles on this list can stand the test of time, so you could pick one with your eyes closed and still have a great time on the road and trail alike for years to come.

Shopping for the best SUV for towing? You’re in luck. We’ve lined up some of the best and most capable SUVs in the market that can get you started on your trailer adventure. Whether it’s for a weekend getaway with the family or a long haul to some remote outdoor paradise, these SUVs can take you there and back without a hitch.

Best SUVs for Towing: Full-Size Category

Toyota Sequoia

Max Towing Capacity: 9,520 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $59,800+

Toyotas are known for reliability and build quality, so seeing one on this best-of list is not surprising. The Sequoia comes fresh from the dealer with a 9,520-lb towing capacity so you can immediately plan your trailer-towing adventures. The SUV has a standard combination of a 437-horsepower hybrid powertrain and a 10-speed automatic transmission, making driving on the road and off a satisfying experience. Passengers will also love the spacious, luxurious cabin that elevates their comfort while in transit. No sore butts and cramped legroom in this SUV.

Jeep Wagoneer

Max Towing Capacity: 10,000 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $66,000+

The Jeep Wagoneer is one of the strongest contenders on this list with its impressive 10,000-lb towing capacity. However, prospective buyers must opt for the Heavy-Duty Trailer-Tow Package to reach the maximum towing capacity. The package costs an additional $1,495 and comes with features like a beefier rear axle, heavy-duty cooling and other add-ons that make pulling heavy loads a breeze. Jeep also released the lux Grand Wagoneer to compete with the Lincoln Navigator and Cadillac Escalade. It might be a bit richer for some people’s taste and budget, but it’s a capable hauler nonetheless with a maximum 9,850-lb towing capacity.

Midsize SUV towing an adventure trailer

Ford Expedition

Max Towing Capacity: 9,300 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $56,500+

An American household name, Ford amazes with the Expedition capable of safely pulling 9,300 pounds of trailers, dirt bikes, ATVs or anything in between. Its torquey twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine delivers a low 2,250 rpm for stable hauling of heavy loads. Motoring enthusiasts will love the stylish design with a hint of ruggedness, making the full-size SUV look good in urban and rural destinations. Prospective buyers should opt for the heavy-duty trailering package on the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) version — worth $795 — to bring the standard 6,000-lb towing capacity to the fullest. A reasonable price for the assortment of trailer-towing goodies it offers.

Nissan Armada

Max Towing Capacity: 8,500 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $50,700+

The Nissan Armada is one of the most affordable — but capable towers — on this list with a sticker price of just over $50,000. The SUV comes with an 8,500-lb towing capacity fresh from the dealership. No need to pay for additional heavy-duty packages, making it an excellent choice for drivers who just want a straightforward hauler. Some features that make the Armada a strong contender include the 7-pin wiring harness, auto-leveling suspension, Intelligent Around-View Monitor and a class IV hitch. Prospective buyers just need to add a ball receiver and they’re ready to start hauling.

Chevrolet Tahoe

Max Towing Capacity: 8,400 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $54,400+

Chevrolet — another American automotive icon — brings a compelling offering to the table with the Tahoe. The full-size SUV is capable of pulling 8,400 pounds’ worth of trailers, boats, offroad toys, and other vehicles with ease and class. The suave exterior makes it a tempting choice for drivers who want a stylish weekday car while the engine options give buyers more freedom to customize their rig accordingly. The Tahoe can maximize its full towing capacity with the help of an additional Max Trailering Package worth $250. A minimal investment for a whole lot of extra hauling capacity.

Dark-colored pickup being towed on the road

Lexus LX

Max Towing Capacity: 8,000 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $90,800+

A premium full-size SUV with the full capabilities of a dedicated trailer puller. The Lexus LX makes it to our best SUV for towing list due to its powerful 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine capable of producing 409 horses and 479 lb-ft of torque. You wouldn’t notice it from the lavish exterior but the LX is a straight-up beast on the road and the trail. With four-wheel-drive capabilities and trailer sway control, drivers will feel more confident attacking steep inclines or craggy roads. The price tag may be a little off-putting for some but the LX’s refinement, reliability and power more than make up for it in headturning style.

Best SUVs for Towing: Mid-Size Category

Nissan Pathfinder

Max Towing Capacity: 6,000 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $38,800+

Here’s another entry from Nissan but in the midsize SUV category. The Pathfinder offers a respectable 6,000-lb maximum towing capacity with its SV model. Different higher-trim versions offer trailer-towing accessories like a class III hitch, hitch ball mount, finisher and 4-pin wiring harness. Prospective buyers will enjoy the ample space this three-row SUV offers as families can stow essential luggage conveniently inside the vehicle. Regarding styling, the Pathfinder’s rugged looks are perfect for hitting the road and some light trail with its wide, bulky body and expansive windshield. Although it looks plain compared to other haulers on this list, it’s still a worthy option, especially considering its affordable price.

Offroad rig pulling a trailer

Dodge Durango

Max Towing Capacity: 8,700 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $60,100+

The Durango’s base model — the RWD SXT — is no slouch with its 6,200-lb max towing capacity, but drivers who want to take it to the next level should look into the AWD Durango R/T. The 380-horsepower 5.7-liter V8 engine produces enough power to pull a maximum of 8,700 pounds with a little help from the Tow N’ Go Package. The add-on may feel a little steep at a little less than $6,000 but it includes an electronic limited-slip differential, a trailer brake controller, upgraded brakes and suspension and other goodies that make it an enticing addition. For drivers looking into getting a midsize hauler, the Dodge Durango comes with an exciting proposition.

Porsche Cayenne

Max Towing Capacity: 7,700 lbs

Sticker Price for Towing Model: $72,000+

Another automotive Icon makes it to the list with the Porsche Cayenne. The Turbo GT model goes hard with its eye-catching design and eye-widening power from its 631-horsepower engine. The icing on top of that already sweet package is its 7,700-lb towing capacity. While many drivers wouldn’t consider a luxury vehicle a good choice for towing, the Cayenne makes a compelling argument with its robust chassis and reputable AWD system. It’s a looker, a performer and an icon rolled into one suave package. This option is for the enthusiast who likes to make a statement but also likes to live

Choosing the Best SUV for Towing

Budget and needs are the most important personal considerations when choosing a vehicle, regardless of style or trim. However, choosing the best SUV for towing requires more than just those two criteria. Here are several towing tips.

  • Choose AWD or 4WD. AWD and 4WD can make towing much easier and less stressful. The extra pulling power from having all four wheels scratching on the ground is a confident booster in inclement weather and slippery roads.
  • Study the towing basics before you start loading. Look into the payload or the maximum weight your vehicle can carry, gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or the weight of your vehicle and the additional payload and the gross combined weight rating (GCWR) or the maximum allowable weight of your vehicle plus the loaded trailer.
  • Consider the tongue weight before you hitch anything to your vehicle. The tongue weight is the amount of weight a loaded trailer exerts on a vehicle’s hitch. It should be around 10-15% of the total trailer weight. You must ensure your hitch rating can cover that weight.
  • Never go beyond your vehicle’s tow rating. Many beginner drivers think they can go over their SUV’s tow rating just a little bit. Experts strongly suggest sticking to the vehicle tow rating to prevent accidents and system failure on the road. Pulling loads beyond the towing rating can lead to catastrophic results — a no-no when you’re out on the road or remote trail.
  • Check the trim before you buy. Some models in a car lineup are better rated for towing than others. Ensure you have the right model for your needs before you pay for anything. Do your research and communicate your needs with the dealership to get the right SUV for your towing needs.
  • Get the tow package if possible. While many manufacturers offer tow-ready vehicles straight from the dealership, you may need to pay for a heavy-duty towing package to your purchase for other models. These packages are an excellent choice for achieving that maximum towing capacity since they equip your vehicle with the right accessories and upgrades.

Load Up and Tow and Responsibly

Picking the best SUV for towing can be tricky with so many options available in the market. However, it’s just one aspect of driving with a heavy load in tow. Studying the different aspects of towing to ensure your safety and others on the road is equally important. Find a mentor or join trailer-towing communities to get the necessary knowledge for a safe and enjoyable drive.

The best off-road trucks of all time belong in an elite class of vehicles. Off-roading enthusiasts can only drive as far as their vehicles allow them to. If you hit the trails with a substandard ride, you’re going to have a bad time.

That’s why pick-up trucks have reigned supreme over the mountain paths and desert hills for decades. Off-road vehicles come in many shapes and sizes, but trucks have strength and power that SUVs or 4x4s can rarely match. Let’s dive right in and give proper recognition to the seven undisputed best off-road trucks of all time.

1. Ford F-150 (2009-2020)

The F-150 has been THE off-road truck for many years, with the 12th generation from 2009 to 2014 being the most successful. It was the first generation to offer two new powerful 4.6 and 5.4 liter V8 engines. This generation also enhanced the interior and exterior trim, simultaneously making the truck more durable and luxurious.

The 13th generation from 2015 to 2020 continued to build on the previous generation’s success. These models have beds that are about 50 inches wide — more than big enough to fit a four-wheeler and other off-roading equipment. This generation also got a big strength boost, boasting up to 450 horsepower and a towing capacity up to 8,000 pounds.

2. Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 (2007-2023)

The Colorado ZR2 is Chevy’s best off-road truck and easily one of the best off-road trucks of all time. We could have included all of the Colorado variations on this list, but the ZR2 is the cream of the crop. Chevy has added numerous off-road upgrades to the ZR2 over the years, including these notable features:

  • 3.5” wider track
  • 2″ suspension lift
  • Wider fender flares
  • Aluminum skid plates
  • Rock Sliders
  • Multimatic Dynamic Suspension Spool Valve (DSSV) Dampers
  • Aggressive bumper and grille designs for improved departure angle
  • New “Off-road Mode” that alters throttle progression, shift calibration, traction control, stability control, and ABS for different terrain.

Aside from its off-road features, the ZR2 has plenty of raw power. The latest models deliver 310 horsepower, 430 foot-pounds of torque and a towing capacity of 6,000 pounds. This beauty belongs right next to the F-150 as the kings of off-road trucks.

3. Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 (2010-2021)

The Silverado ZR2 sits right next to the Colorado ZR2 on our list for many of the same reasons. It offers the same V-6 straight engine options as the Colorado, which means it has a comparable performance in off-road environments. The later models also offer 6.2-liter V8 engines, which might be the most powerful engines on the list with 420 horsepower.

The Silverado also boasts some monstrous 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud terrain tires, which is a huge game changer for off-roaders. This truck has the size and strength to get you out of any rough terrain.

4. GMC Canyon AT4X (2014-2023)

The Canyon is another truck with close ties to the Chevy Colorado. Both midsize designs come from the same General Motors developers in North America, so you can expect an almost identical performance for most model years. However, the Canyon’s recent models have significantly raised its placing on the best off-road trucks of all time.

Starting in 2023, GMC improved the Canyon’s approach angle to 36.9 degrees and added new 17-inch wheels wrapped in Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud terrain tires — the same tires on the Colorado. These features combine to provide optimal traction and navigation in suboptimal road conditions. Don’t underestimate the 2.7-liter engine either — it still packs a punch with 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque.

5. Toyota Tacoma (2000-2004, 2013-2015)

The Tacoma isn’t the biggest or boldest Toyota, but it’s a better off-road vehicle than the Tundra or 4Runner for several reasons. For starters, it has a whopping towing capacity of 6,800 pounds, fantastic driving performance and a bed width of about 60 inches. The late second-gen and third-gen models  also have the greatest reputations for durability of any truck on this list.

Additionally, since the Tacoma is one of Toyota’s longest-running lines of vehicles, you have access to many off-road modifications and spare parts. You can keep upgrading your Tacoma and improving its off-road performance for years to come.

6. Dodge Ram 1500 TRX (2013-2023)

The Dodge Ram looks like a machine of pure brute force, but it has much more finesse than most people realize. Hidden under the hood is a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine, the same engine found in the Dodge Challenger Hellcat. This amazing feature allows you to go from 0-60 in under four seconds, which is a whole new level of speed and acceleration for pick-ups.

The Ram also has the typical features you’d expect from one of the best off-road trucks of all time. 11.8 inches of ground clearance is elite, and the 702 maximum horsepower is the highest on the list by far. Dodge doesn’t get as much love as Ford, Chevy or Toyota, but the Ram undeniably belongs with the F-150, Colorado and Tacoma.

7. Jeep Gladiator (2021-2023)

There has to be at least one Jeep vehicle on this list, and the Gladiator earns the coveted spot. It might have relatively new and unconventional body kit designs, but its 60-inch bed and 4,500-pound towing capacity set it apart from the Wrangler, Grand Cherokee and other Jeep models. Its 285 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque are more than respectable too.

The Gladiator also maintains all of the same trademark Jeep features — detachable doors, open sunroof and fold-down windshield. It provides the driving experience of a classic Jeep 4×4, but it brings the power of a pick-up truck too. That’s why it deserves a spot on the best off-road trucks of all time.

Hit the Trails With Any Brand

All off-roading enthusiasts have a personal preference for a specific brand. Ford, Chevy and Toyota are certainly the most popular, but other automakers have created their own elite off-road vehicles. You can hit the trails with any vehicle brand thanks to these seven behemoths, which belong among the best off-road trucks of all time.

A lot of guys get a sports car when they’re young. They cruise around in their Corvette and show off on the streets until they have their first child. Then, it’s time to turn in the keys and get a minivan. What if we said you could keep the luxury vehicle and drive kid-friendly sports cars?

Nowadays, automakers are expanding beyond individual car enthusiasts. You can buy a Ferrari or a Porsche and still take the kids to soccer practice — you’ll just be doing it in style. Let’s look at seven of the best kid-friendly best sports cars.

1. Porsche Panamera

Let’s start with Porsche, one of the world’s most famous sports car manufacturers. The Stuttgart-based automaker is renowned for the 911, Cayenne and Taycan. If you’re looking for kid-friendly sports cars at a Porsche dealership, take the Panamera for a spin.

The Panamera is a relatively new model for Porsche, debuting in 2009. Typically, you’d see two-door coupes with Porsche, but the Panamera flips the script with a four-door, four-passenger sports car. The base model starts at 325 horsepower, but you can get up to 573 with the GTS edition featuring a V-8 engine. The Panamera is excellent for riding in style while being family-friendly.

2. Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

Alfa Romeo is one of the oldest luxury car manufacturers in the world. Hearing its name brings memories of Formula One and its recent resurgence in the racing league. You can’t drive Zhou Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo on the streets, but you can drive your kids in a Stelvio Quadrifoglio.

The Quadrifoglio looks similar to a typical SUV on the highway. Still, the performance says otherwise. Alfa Romeo gives the Quadrifoglio 505 horsepower with 443 pounds of torque. It can reach 176 miles per hour (mph), but we wouldn’t recommend those speeds in the school pick-up lanes.

3. Lamborghini Urus

Let’s stay in the Italian sports car realm and discuss the Lamborghini Urus. Lamborghini is famous for its speedy roadsters like the Huracan. Grand Theft Auto enthusiasts may know it because of the Pegassi Tempesta. Nowadays, the Lamborghini Urus is one of the best kid-friendly sports cars on the market.

The Urus is relatively new, debuting in late 2017. This model packs a punch with 657 horsepower under the hood. What about top speed? Its 190 mph limit might let you keep up at the Daytona International Speedway. Ultimately, it’s an SUV with plenty of seating for your kids and anybody else who loves the power of Lamborghinis.

4. Audi RS 6 Avant

If we talk about luxury vehicles, we can’t leave out Audi. The German manufacturer has long been known for making sleek sports cars that look good on the streets. Now, you can include the kids in the Audi fun with the RS 6 Avant.

The RS 6 Avant looks like the old station wagons you’d see back in the ‘70s and ‘80s. Imagine the Griswolds taking a road trip in 2023 using this vehicle. Though, don’t let the innocent looks fool you. The RS 6 Avant is a powerful roadster.

This Audi model has a twin-turbo engine with 600 horsepower and nearly 600 pounds per foot of torque. The zero-to-60 speed is about 3.6 seconds, which is more than acceptable. The top speed is about 155 mph, but it’s a terrific vehicle for driving the kids around town.

5. Aston Martin DBX707

The British automakers first appear on the list through the Aston Martin DBX707. Aston Martin is synonymous with a particular spy character and his famous movies. James Bond typically drives the DB model. For example, Bond drives the DB5 in the first film, “Goldfinger.” If he’s taking his kids out for a drive, he might break out of the DBX707.

Aston Martin debuted the DBX707 in 2020 as the company’s first-ever SUV. It’s sleek, and its road performance has received praise from auto enthusiasts. You get nearly 700 horsepower from the DBX707 and a large front grille. Plus, you can take this machine to the track and test your drifting skills. What more could you ask for in your kid-friendly sports cars?

6. Mercedes-AMG C63

Mercedes-Benz is nearing its 100th birthday and has nearly a century of producing quality luxury vehicles. The AMG division is famous for its high-performance cars, such as the C63. The Mercedes-AMG C63 suits this class with terrific acceleration and over 500 horsepower. The newer models have plug-in hybrid options, making you more environmentally conscious.

You’ll likely see the Mercedes Drive Pilot feature in the AMG C63. This system reaches level three autonomy, according to the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Drive Pilot lets you take your eyes off the road. Still, you must be ready to take over the steering wheel anytime. We’re getting closer to the self-driving vehicles you’ve been hearing about.

7. Subaru WRX

Subaru has a terrific reputation in the automotive industry. Many gearheads laud the automaker for its safety. Subaru consistently gets high marks from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and JD Power and Associates. The IIHS lists five Subaru vehicles as its top safety picks. One of those machines you’ll see is the WRX.

The Subaru WRX is one of the best sports cars on the market for families. With the WRX, you get excellent power and safety. The zero-to-60 speed is about 5.5 seconds — a tad slower than what you’d see in other sports cars. However, you get adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking. It’s hard to beat these features when looking at kid-friendly sports cars.

Cruising in the Best Kid-friendly Sports Cars

Sports car manufacturers are still making the sleek two-door coupes you’re used to seeing on the road. Though, they’re expanding to include families in the mix. You don’t have to trade in your speedster if you don’t want to. You can still find kid-friendly sports cars worldwide.

Automakers like Porsche, Aston Martin and Alfa Romeo are getting into the crossover craze because that’s what people want to see. More people are craving the family-oriented SUVs you can take to baseball practice and the beach. You don’t have to compromise style when you choose cars.

Do you live for the great outdoors? Hiking is fabulous exercise, but sometimes, you have a lot of God’s country to see and only a short time to do it. What different types of off-road vehicles can you opt for when you have a need for speed?

Various types have various uses, depending on your favorite activity and terrain. For example, someone with a permit to haul in an 800-pound elk needs a different off-road vehicle than someone looking for a fun weekend at the dunes or a weekend in Tahoe. The right ride keeps you safer on your outdoor adventures while increasing your overall enjoyment.

If you’re considering investing in a new toy, it helps to know your choices. Let’s take a closer look at the different types of off-road vehicles.

1. ATVs

The first type of off-road vehicle on our list is the most ubiquitous: the ATV or all-terrain vehicle. It refers to a ride with four non-pneumatic tires and a straddle seat. It also comes in multiple varieties and styles:

  • Utility ATVs: These are rugged and designed for working and hunting. They may have little to no suspension and a bumpy ride. Electric models have recently become popular because they’re quieter, making them popular among those seeking game.
  • Sport ATVs: These are much faster than utility ATVs and have impressive suspensions, allowing riders to race over uneven terrain.
  • Side-by-sides: Have the ability to carry a passenger.

At one time, three-wheeler ATVs were also a thing. However, their design led to numerous accidents, and while you can occasionally find used ones today, most manufacturers voluntarily ceased production in 1998.

What differentiates ATVs from UTVs is their design. Although they have four tires, you straddle and steer them like a bicycle. Many of them have no gears, simply a throttle. Lay on it when you want to accelerate and ease off to slow down or use the brake.

These vehicles are ideal for exploring the great outdoors and covering a lot of territory in one day. They can tackle uneven terrain and varied landscapes, from desert sand to mountain screes.

Pro-tip: Most people refer to ATVs as “quads” or “4-wheelers.”

2. UTVs

UTVs are similar to ATVs. The primary difference is size, as UTVs can carry more than one passenger, sometimes as many as six, but typically two to four. They also drive more like a car instead of a bike, with a steering wheel and gearshift.

UTVs are often more stable than ATVs. Over 10,000 people died in ATVs between 1982 and 2009, but numbers for UTVs are far smaller because of several features:

  • Roll cage design: If you roll an ATV, you could fly off a cliff, down an embankment or into something hazardous, like oncoming. Roll cages on UTVs keep you safely inside the vehicle.
  • Low, broad design: UTVs are lower to the ground and feature a wider base, making them less prone to rollovers.

UTVs are often preferred by families and hunters. They’re equally great for taking the kiddos out to explore a new trail or hauling in a big buck without breaking your back.

3. Enduro and Trail Bikes

There are two types of motorized bikes designed for off-road use:

  • Enduro bikes: These are designed for off-road use and built to go the distance, with big engines.
  • Trail bikes: Lighter and smaller, designed to go around sharp curves.

Both enduro and trail bikes are usually street-legal or capable of such a conversion, thanks to their headlights and other electronics that help them navigate in the dark. Therefore, you can go from the highway to the trail without an extra trailer. This feature differentiates them from motocross bikes, which aren’t designed for on-the-road use.

5. Mountain Bikes

You might not think of your mountain bike as an off-road vehicle — until you realize how much more ground you can cover with one. These devices get you a great workout while letting you see more of your favorite outdoor destination.

You also have tons of options, making your ride infinitely customizable. Consider the following factors when selecting a mountain bike:

  • Suspension: A soft suspension makes it easier to descend and navigate rocks, while a hardtail gives you more speed and climbing ability.
  • Wheel size: Some trail bikes have fat tires for navigating rocky trails. Additionally, the diameter impacts your ride’s comfort over distances versus how well it can jump.
  • Brand: Well-known brands are easier to find parts for when it’s time for repair.

6. Jeeps

The Jeep is the original vehicle designed for both on and off-road driving. The brand arose from the military need for something that combined the off-road ability of horses with motorcycle maneuverability and general-purpose transportation needs. After WWII, Willys kept making these vehicles, which became increasingly popular until evolving into today’s brand.

Older model Jeeps are a mechanic’s dream vehicle. Their easy-to-navigate engine makes it a snap even for novices to learn basic tasks. However, newer models can be too much of a status symbol to want to dirty on the trail — choose wisely. At the very least, consider add-ons like skid plates to protect your investment while you play.

7. Other 4WD Street Vehicles

Jeep doesn’t have a monopoly on highway-to-off-road design. Today, you can find scores of 4WD vehicles suitable for off-road driving, including some greener electric models like the following:

  • Ford F150 Lightning
  • Rivian R1T
  • Hummer EV
  • Chevrolet Silverado EV
  • GMC Sierra EV
  • Ram 1500 REV

8. Dune Buggies

Rounding out the list of different types of off-road vehicles are two specialty rides. The first are those made for the sand

  • Dune buggies: Modified existing cars that are often street-legal.
  • Sandrails: Custom-made frames that aren’t street-legal.

These vehicles feature paddle tires and low centers of gravity that lets them climb dunes. People build entire industries around creating custom builds, although you can find kits if you aren’t too certain of your DIY skills. Some people design them for going the distance, while others prefer speed.

9. Snowmobiles

The final type of off-road vehicle is a snowmobile. These also come in various styles, some designed for a single rider, others for carrying passengers. There are long-range, utility snowmobiles and speedy racers. The one feature they share is their ability to travel over snow and ice where tires slip. Instead of wheels, they use a continuous Kevlar track.

What Are the Different Types of Off-Road Vehicles

If you’re in the market for a new toy, it helps to know what different types of off-road vehicles you have to choose from. Each one is slightly different in purpose and performance.

Selecting the right type of off-road vehicle can significantly increase your enjoyment of the great outdoors. Invest in one of these toys today and elevate your next getaway.

Nothing says “adventure” more than off-roading. If you’re the kind of guy who likes to tread off the beaten track and explore where others dare not, you’re going to need a vehicle to match. That’s where off-road SUVs come in. What would you say are the best off-road SUVs of all time?

SUVs — a.k.a Sport Utility Vehicles — have a large with a high right height, elevated seating positions and an expansive cargo area. They’re more robust and utilitarian than other everyday vehicles. Nowadays, SUVs come in all shapes and sizes. This list will cover the 5 best off-road SUVs of all time.

The Best Of The Best Off-Roaders

Here’s a brief introduction. This list not only covers vehicles purchasable today, but also ones that left their mark on the SUV industry.

1. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon

Jeep is one of the first that comes to mind when you think of off-road vehicles. Of all the vehicles under Jeep’s label, the Rubicon stands out as a rugged and fuel-efficient machine.

The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon comes with a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 engine. Equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, the engine produces 260 hp of horsepower and 442 pounds of torque outputs. Combine that with Jeep’s incredible four-wheel drive and you’ve got the makings of a top off-road contender.

2. Land Rover Defender

Land Rovers are usually in direct competition with Jeeps when it comes to rugged SUVs and the Defender is a worthy rival. This 4X4 beast eschews the traditional body-on-frame design for a new aluminum monocoque frame that makes the body of the SUV impressively strong while also allowing for improvements to the suspension.

The result is a callous yet technologically sophisticated machine that can handle almost any situation. For those who want an EV option, the Defender 110 has a plug-in hybrid option that can do 27 miles on electricity alone.

3. AM General Hummer/Hummer H1

The Hummer brand is still building successful off-road vehicles today, but nothing made an impression quite like the original AM General — known today as the Hummer H1. Originally manufactured in 1995, the Hummer H1 was designed to be the U.S. soldier’s constant companion. With a drivetrain and four-wheel suspension that provided a massive 16 inches of ground clearance, this was the ultimate off-road vehicle of its time.

In 1999, GM bought the Hummer license and, seeing how iconic it had become, created versions of the H1 for the civilian market. The rest, as they say, is history.

4. Subaru Outback

Another rival of Jeep, the Subaru Outback, is another name that often comes up on top lists for off-road vehicles. A classic for outdoor enthusiasts, the Outback has been ferrying many adventurers into the wilds since 1998.

Time has been good to the Outback — the latest models, like the Outback Wilderness, combine its signature toughness and all-wheel drive with Subaru’s latest iterations of their EyeSight and X-Mode technology. All of this makes for a vehicle with brains and brawn in equal measure. If you’re the kind of adventurer that likes to be prepared for anything, the Outback might be the right choice for you.

5. Ford Bronco

Many give the Bronco credit for creating the market for SUVs in America. If there was a Hollywood for off-road vehicles, it would have a gold star on the walk of fame.

Unfortunately, the Bronco floundered once competition in the market started getting intense. In 1996, Ford canned the Bronco line of vehicles and started the Expedition series in its place. However, in 2021 Ford revived the Bronco and gave it a modern-day makeover.

The 2021 Bronco comes with two options for engines. The first is a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 325 pounds of torque. The second is a 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 with 330 horsepower and 415 pounds of torque. That’s just the beginning of the customizable features the Bronco has to offer.

Although its suspension isn’t as great as its competition, it makes up for it by offering an independent front suspension design far superior to the solid-front-axle method.

The Different Kinds Of Body Construction

Here are some facts regarding the different types of construction that guys savvy about the more technical side of things will find helpful. While the differences may not be as pronounced today, there are still some aspects that might affect your choices if you’re in the market for an off-road SUV.

The main split between crossovers and SUVs is the frame. SUVs use body-on-frame construction — a skeleton of two parallel rails connected by stiffeners. Like the bones of humans, this frame holds the entire car together. It houses all the essential parts like the engine, suspension, wheels and more. The vehicle’s body is placed on top of the frame like a hat on a head.

In contrast, a unibody is an entire frame and body constructed as one. This distributes the weight throughout the entire vehicle instead of just the frame.

There are a lot of advantages to a unibody frame. Vehicles constructed this way are lighter and stiffer, which improves mileage. Unibody vehicles are also designed to fold in the event of a crash, potentially reducing the force of impact. Handling on a unibody vehicle is generally better because there is room to make the steering and suspension more stable.

However, a body-on-frame design is considered by most to be better for off-roading. Body-on-frame is less stiff and heavier, allowing it to handle rough terrain with minor damage. In fact, body-on-frame vehicles are tougher than unibody overall — and if a part needs replacing, it’s much easier to do so.

Driving the Best Off-road SUVS of All Time

Every adventurer has a constant companion. For frontiersmen like Lewis and Clark, it was their horses. For the 21st-century man, it’s an SUV. While it might not be as good for the company as a horse, an SUV will still take care of you no matter where in the world you decide to go.

Driving on unpaved roads can have severe negative effects on your vehicle if you’re not careful. Your car might be well-equipped to handle dirt, gravel and other off-road surfaces, but accidents can still happen.

Here are the main dangers of driving on unpaved roads, plus five tips for keeping your vehicle safe.

How Can Unpaved Roads Damage Your Car?

While paved roads are smooth and stable, unpaved roads are rough, unstable and have minimal traction. The risk of an accident significantly increases once you go off-road. Unpaved roads account for up to 20% of accident fatalities in some states.

Unpaved roads can also damage your car’s paint, tires, suspension system, undercarriage and engine. Even if you have special off-road modifications to improve your car’s performance, you still might encounter the following problems:

  • Paint: As your car kicks up debris while driving off-road, many small scratches can hurt the car’s appearance and value.
  • Tires: Your tires are much more likely to experience uneven wear and tear on unpaved roads. Rocks can also get caught in the treads, which can be difficult to remove. A full tire puncture from a sharp rock, nail or piece of glass is another possibility.
  • Suspension: Your car’s alignment, shocks and struts — all crucial components of the suspension system — erode more quickly when driving on unpaved roads. As they get worn down, your car will drive less smoothly and might develop an uneven steering problem.
  • Undercarriage: You’re almost guaranteed to encounter muddy spots on unpaved roads. The mud kicks up into your undercarriage, filling every nook and cranny with unwanted moisture. Moisture leads to rust, which causes the undercarriage to erode and fall apart.
  • Engine: Mud and other debris also get into your engine, clogging the air filtration system and causing the engine to overheat more quickly. The air filtration system is also responsible for sending clean air into your car’s cabin, so you might end up breathing unclean air full of dirt particles.

Every time you drive on an unpaved road, you must be aware of the potential consequences. Your car might be fine after one or two weeks of off-roading, but the damage will start to pile up after a while. You could end up spending thousands of dollars on repairs.

5 Tips to Protect Your Vehicle on Unpaved Roads

Driving on roads that are unpaved is more common than you think — about 35% of U.S. roads are unpaved. Many paved roads also have rumble strips, potholes and other uneven patches that you need to look out for. Keep these tips in mind whenever you need to drive on an uneven or unpaved surface.

  1. Be Mindful of Other Drivers

You should always be mindful of other drivers, but this friendly attitude is especially important on dirt roads. Slow down for oncoming traffic so you don’t kick up rocks and dust as they drive by. Hopefully they will show you the same courtesy. You should also flash your high beams or beep your horn when turning blind corners to warn anyone on the other side.

Unpaved roads are also usually narrower than the average two-way street, so you might need to pull over to let another car pass. Bigger vehicles always get the right-of-way because it’s harder for them to change speeds or pull over.

  1. Take it Slow

The first and most important rule when driving on rough roads is to take things slow. Since you have less traction, you won’t be able to accelerate or brake as effectively. Keep your speed in the 10-20 mph range so you can dodge obstacles and make a sudden stop if necessary. Driving slowly also kicks up fewer rocks and other debris, which reduces the damage to your vehicle.

  1. Watch Out for Obstructions

Some obstructions on unpaved roads aren’t immediately obvious. Bulldust holes, divots, rocks, muddy patches and wildlife can blend into the environment. You need to pay close attention to the road ahead so you have time to react to oncoming obstacles. Even if you drive on the same roads, new obstructions can emerge at any time.

  1. Slightly Lower Your Tire Pressure

Slightly lowering the tire pressure is a simple way to improve your car’s performance on unpaved roads. The tires can conform to the uneven surface more effectively, which adds more traction and reduces the chance of a puncture. Just remember to re-inflate the tires back to their proper PSI measurements once you’re back on paved roads.

  1. Keep Your Headlights On

You should always keep your headlights on when driving off-road, even in broad daylight. They will help you identify obstacles in the roadway and improve your visibility to other motorists. Some unpaved roads with constant traffic even have special laws that require drivers to use their headlights.

Take Extra Precautions on Unpaved Roads

Driving on unpaved roads increases the risk of an accident and subjects your vehicle to many types of damage. You need to take extra precautions to protect yourself, your car and other drivers. Keep these five tips in mind next time you go off-road to make the drive go as smoothly as possible.

There’s nothing quite like taking on the wilderness behind the wheel of your favorite truck, Jeep or other off-road vehicle but if you haven’t taken that plunge yet, it can be difficult to know where to start. If you want to try your hand at off-roading but are worried about having the right equipment, we’ve put together a guide to off-roading to get you started.

1. Pick the Right Car

You don’t want to go off-road in a Toyota Corolla. It doesn’t matter how much you trick it out, you’re going to end up stuck and probably sunk in a mudhole. Make sure you pick the right vehicle to take off the road.

A few things to consider include:

  • Ground Clearance: Low ground clearance is going to result in you tearing up your undercarriage and ripping parts off your car. Get something that can go up and over obstacles, not get stuck on them.
  • 4×4 or All-Wheel Drive: Don’t take a front-wheel drive car off the road if you can help it — those cars are designed for road use only. Pick a car with all-wheel or 4-wheel drive.
  • Traction Control: A vehicle with traction control will help keep you moving forward regardless of the ground conditions. It works by monitoring wheel spin and adding additional torque to one or more tires to keep them moving.
  • Locking Differential: Normally, your wheels don’t spin at the same time, especially during a turn. A locking differential keeps both your wheels spinning at the same rate to keep you moving in case one wheel loses traction.
  • Body on Frame Construction: This can be tricky to find, especially if you buy a new vehicle. Many manufacturers have moved away from this type of construction because it’s heavier and reduces fuel efficiency, but it also makes it easier for a rough trail to break something important on the frame or body.

Now, you can find all these things in any number of trucks and SUVs. You just have to know where to look and what questions to ask.

2. Trick Out Your Ride

There are plenty of accessories you can add to make your trail-driving experience more enjoyable, but there are some items you should absolutely invest in before you head out onto the trail for the first time.

Tires

Road tires are not going to cut it out on the trail, and trail tires aren’t going to cut it in the mud. Figure out what type of off-roading you want to do, then head down to your local tire shop to talk to the experts and figure out the best kind of tire for your vehicle and intentions.

Bumpers

If you buy a stock truck or SUV, it’s not going to be outfitted for off-roading, which means you’ll probably rip off your stock fiberglass bumpers the first time out. Prevent potential vehicle damage by upgrading your bumpers.

Suspension

Suspension designed for road driving is going to leave you bouncing out of your seat every time you take your vehicle off the road. Upgrade your suspension to something intended for off-roading — you want a setup that can take the punishment and then some to make your trail riding comfortable while protecting your car.

Winch

Don’t take your vehicle off-roading without a winch, period. That goes double if you’re out by yourself — if you get stuck in a hole or a mud puddle by yourself, a winch can be a lifesaver. Without it, you’re stuck until you can call a tow, or until someone else happens down the trail who does have a winch.

Snorkel

These are only necessary if you’re going mudding or off-roading in or around water. If that is the case, a snorkel can save you from a water-locked engine by keeping your air intake above the water line.

Lights

Just because you’re only planning on going off-road during the day doesn’t mean you shouldn’t invest in some good lights. Sometimes, the day gets away from you, and your standard headlights just won’t cut it if you’re trying to get out of the woods in the dark.

Don’t go out on the trail unprepared. If you do, you’re setting yourself up for failure and probably an expensive repair and/or tow bill. Make sure you follow all the tips in this guide to off-roading.

3. Know Your Trail

Before you take your new off-road vehicle out for the first time, take some time to scout your trail. It will be different to experience it once you’re behind the wheel, but it can be helpful to know some of the obstacles you’ll be facing to make sure your vehicle is equipped to handle them.

Make sure you pick a trail that works for the tires and other equipment you’ve chosen. Also, be aware of the weather forecasts for your planned trips, and make sure you know of any flash floods, avalanches or washed-out roads.

4. Pack Smart

When you’re heading out on the trail, you’re going to be miles away from the nearest gas station or convenience store — make sure you’re prepared for anything and everything. This guide to off-roading doesn’t provide a comprehensive list by any means, but here a few things you should always pack.

Food and Water

Bring snacks, drinks and food for any meals you might be taking out on the trail. Just like when you’re hiking or on foot, it’s important to stay hydrated and fed.

First Aid Kit

Just in case. You should always have a stocked first aid kit in your car anyway, even if you’re just driving to and from work.

Map and Compass

If you get lost, it’s always helpful to be able to find your way home. Of course, you’ll take your phone or GPS with you, but a good old-fashioned map and compass can point you back toward the nearest highway if you can’t get a signal.

Hatchet, Saw and Folding Shovel

Whether you’ve got a tree jammed in your wheel well or need to dig out one of your tires, having these tools with you is a lifesaver.

Spare Tire and Tire Repair Kit

Flat tires are just part of off-roading. Keep at least one spare tire with you at all time, as well as the tools you need to replace it — including a lug wrench and jack. A tire repair kit can be useful, too, but make sure you have an air compressor handy to refill your flat tire.

Emergency Supplies

If you’re stuck on the trail waiting for help or a tow, you might be there for a while. Keep things like a flashlight, CB radio and food supplies in your car to keep you alive while you wait for help to arrive.

Having everything on this list it can mean the difference between a fun day on the trail and being stuck waiting for someone to rescue you.

A Beginner’s Guide to Off-Roading

Other than the tips found in this guide to off-roading, the only rules are to be courteous to other drivers and have fun on the trail. Off-roading is a fantastic way to really make your truck or SUV sing. As long as you’re careful, it’s a great way to spend the weekend.

There’s something universal about a love of cars — whether you enjoy restoring classic cars or prefer to drive newer models, no matter where you live, there are places for you to enjoy your passion. As with most things, though, some locations are better than others. What’s the best state to live in if you love cars?

Best State for Driving

There are roughly 164,000 miles of highways in the United States, but all roads are not created equal. Some states are better than others when it comes to on-road driving.

Arizona ranks highest for highway driving — thousands of miles of highway, much of it through mostly empty desert, and relaxed laws where speeding is concerned.  Getting caught speeding in other states, especially if you’re going way over the speed limit, usually results in a reckless driving ticket.  Not so in Arizona!

It is more expensive to own a car in Arizona than in other states, but the sheer mileage of the highway makes up for it. You’ve also got no highway tolls and little to no emissions testing — some of the bigger cities like Phoenix and Tucson do require emissions testing but they’re the exception, not the rule.

Some runners-up for highway driving include:

  • Florida — avoid the cities, but Florida has some of the prettiest highways in the country, especially if you head toward the south part of the state and head out toward the Florida Keys.
  • Wyoming — A little out of the way, but some beautiful roads to enjoy.
  • California – Driving up the coast… case closed.

You can find great highways in just about every state, so do some research before you pick your state.

Best State for Car Shows

It’s hard to pick just one state for car shows — there are so many amazing ones to choose from, but we had to just narrow it down to two. Our winners for best states for car shows are California and Michigan.

California is home to some of the most famous race tracks in the world, which makes it the perfect place to see both races and car shows.  The Concorso Italiano, held every year in Monterey Bay, is the biggest Italian car show in the world — if you enjoy exotic cars, this is the show for you.

Michigan might not seem like a car-friendly state, but it’s also home to Detroit, the motor city and arguably one of the biggest car cities in the country. The Detroit Auto Show, for example, is often considered one of the biggest car events of any given year.

Best State for Off-Roading

The U.S. isn’t just a destination for highways and car shows — it also has some of the best offroading destinations in the world. We’ve already given California a crown, so we’re going to skip that state in favor of another great locale — Utah.

Moab, Utah is one of the most popular offroading destinations in the world — so popular that some of the trails have had to be marked off-limits for off-road vehicles because drivers were fighting with hikers and mountain bikers for trail space. You do have to pick up an off-road vehicle permit to drive here — they’re available for a fee for both state residents and visitors — but you’re in for a treat with some of the best off-road trails in the country.

Best State for Car Buying

Buying a car isn’t cheap, but there are some states that are better than others when it comes to car buying.

Oregon and Alaska are among the cheapest states for car buying, with the smallest percentage of taxes and fees on the purchase of a new car. Alaska isn’t the best place to own a car though — snow makes it difficult to drive and can be hell on a car’s undercarriage.

Oregon, though, is one of the best places — your new car fees are less than 1 percent of the cost of your car, averaging less than $150 for each car purchase.

If you’re buying a new car, skip Arizona or Florida — their new sale fees average between 11 and 14 percent of the cost of the new car, which can add up quick.

Best State to Live in if You Love Cars

We’re going to give the crown to California. It has great shows, amazing driving, and some of the best car culture you can find. The weather is usually nice as well. That doesn’t mean you want to park on the street though. Most CA car owners and collectors are going to keep the safe inside a garage, even without the worry of snow.

No matter where you own your car, you’re sure to be able to find great highways, off-road trails and car shows. We just took a look at some of the best states but don’t let that discourage you from picking a state that isn’t on our list. Wherever you end up, just take the time to really enjoy the open road — you’ve got hundreds of thousands of miles of highway to choose from, so you’re sure to find somewhere that you really love.  If you’ve found the perfect off-road trail or highway that we’ve missed on our list, let us know! We’re always looking for new places to drive!
