Fortnite was once atop the video game world, drawing in millions of gamers worldwide. While it remains popular, the game has seen its playing rate dip in recent seasons and chapters.

What’s happening to one of the most popular titles in video game history? Here’s what you need to know about Fortnite’s status in 2024.

How Many Players Has Fortnite Lost?

Fortnite quickly ascended after its 2017 release, reaching 125 million players in only one year. The battle royale game was among the first of its kind, letting players compete with other gamers worldwide to see who could be the last player standing. Fortnite has been one of the top video games in the modern era, but its player participation has dipped.

Active Player tracks the number of people playing online games, noting the peak count and the monthly averages. The site also tracks the decrease in players, a metric you can see with Fortnite. Active Player says the game has lost players in the last five months, with January losing 752,000 players once 2024 began.

While the holidays naturally have more players, Fortnite has seen a consistent drop in players this year. For instance, the game lost 422,000 players in April — a stark contrast from April 2023’s gain of 1 million players. Fortnite is in the midst of chapter five, releasing seasons every few months. Time will tell if the game can rekindle player interest.

Why Is Fortnite Losing So Many Users?

Fortnite is experiencing a consistent decline in 2024, so what has happened to the popular game? Here are five reasons the famous title has struggled this year.

1. Changing Directions

Fortnite has changed significantly since its 2017 release. While it’s still a battle royale at heart, the game has taken different directions with new game modes. For example, Epic Games has taken advantage of the metaverse and strayed from its original format. The developer has added more features to Fortnite, including concerts and esports.

The metaverse isn’t directly responsible for a player exodus. However, it symbolizes Epic Games’ strategy to recuperate lost players by adding new features. Additionally, Fortnite has added new game modes and changed battle royale, the foundational piece of the game. Some day-one players aren’t satisfied with the maps and how the game has swayed.

2. Microtransactions

Playing for free was one of the attractive features of Fortnite. While it’s still free, microtransactions have harmed the reputation of games. In 2023, the government ordered Epic Games to pay a $245 million fine for its misconceptions with in-app purchases. Fortnite doesn’t require microtransactions to play the base game, but they contribute to the experience.

While Fortnite has faced criticism for it, microtransactions are prominent across the video game industry. NBA 2k features MyCAREER and MyTEAM in each edition, and players can use virtual currency (VC) to upgrade their players. While you can play to earn VC, many users pay for the in-game funds with real money. Therefore, they can make their players better in less time.

3. Lack of Updates

Older video games contained all the content inside the disc. Nowadays, developers can add content and fix bugs by sending software updates. Players look forward to new content, whether new maps, skins or weapons. One of the world’s most successful games should be up to the task. However, Fortnite users have complained about the lack of updates.

The game modes with the most players will naturally see the most updates. Therefore, developers are likely to focus on keeping battle royale. However, the game has seen a decline in updates outside its new chapters. You don’t receive as much new content as you used to. Players also struggle to play specific games — such as Rocket Racing — causing stagnation.

4. Epic Games Layoffs

Why do players see fewer updates? Part of the reason could be the reduced staff working on the game. Last year, Epic Games announced it would lay off 16% of its staff because of overspending and insufficient revenue. While Fortnite is a primary focus for the developer, the layoffs impact the famous battle royale and other titles at Epic Games.

Losing staff trickles down and affects the video game you run. For example, laying off 16% of the workforce means cutting character artists, senior engineers or other integral employees. You can already see the ramifications in Fortnite with unpopular skins and less engaging stories. Tiny details like user movement and malfunctioning mods have angered seasoned gamers.

5. Other Battle Royale Games Emerging

Fortnite was one of the first battle royale games on the market. While Minecraft and Arma 2 had battle royale features, Fortnite and PUBG kickstarted a new generation of games. The Epic Games title has had the luxury of being one of the first titles of its kind. Gamers have stuck with it since the beginning, but the market has become more saturated with battle royales.

Fortnite inspired other developers to create battle royale games and compete with Epic Games. For instance, Call of Duty: Warzone debuted in spring 2020 to give its loyal fanbase a battle royale. Electronic Arts (EA) brought Apex Legends to the Nintendo Switch to increase participation in its free game. The rising popularity has stolen some thunder from Fortnite.

Monitoring the Future of Fortnite

While it has declined, Fortnite isn’t likely to leave anytime soon. However, the monthly player count is worth watching for the near future. What can Epic Games do to stop the hemorrhaging? The developer could benefit from appealing to longtime players who have stopped playing. Creating engaging chapters and seasons is also crucial to keeping player participation high.

PC purists swear that using a mouse and keyboard is the ultimate way to play. That said, some games feel better with a controller, and you may be more comfortable with one if you’ve grown up playing consoles. If that’s the case, you’ll want to find the best controller for PC.

Like many things in gaming, the best PC controller depends on your budget and the types of games you play. With that in mind, here are top picks for every kind of gamer.

White Xbox controller on a computer keyboard

The Best Overall: Xbox Wireless Controller

The best PC controller for most people is the Xbox Wireless Controller — the one that comes with the Xbox Series X. At around $60, it’s relatively affordable, and it’s hard to find a better value for your money.

Xbox controllers have a reputation for comfort, and this version has new grips and a slightly different ergonomic design to make it even more comfortable. It’s also one of the most widely supported controllers across different games. While you can’t customize it much, you can connect it wirelessly or with a cable, depending on your preference.

Honorable Mentions

The PS5’s DualSense is a good alternative if you prefer the PlayStation layout, but it costs a bit more and doesn’t have as much support. The Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and GameSir Kaleid T4 are solid, too.

The Best High-End Controller: Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra

Want better performance and don’t mind splurging? The Turtle Beach Stealth Ultra is the best PC controller for gamers with deep pockets or those at a competitive level. Its $200 price tag is hard to overlook, but you get what you pay for.

The biggest upside to the Stealth Ultra is its Hall effect sensors in its joysticks. These eliminate the dreaded stick drift that affects virtually every major console gamepad. The Stealth Ultra also has loads of customization options, a big, comfortable grip, mechanical buttons, RGB lighting and extra programmable buttons on the back.

Honorable Mentions

The Xbox Elite Series 2 and Sony’s DualSense Edge are solid premium options, too. Neither is as customizable or reliable as the Stealth Ultra, but they’re a step up from their baseline versions.

Black Xbox 360 controller on grass

The Best Budget Controller: Xbox 360 Wired Controller

On the other end of the spectrum is the beloved Xbox 360 wired controller. Yes, this is an old piece of hardware — so old that you’ll almost certainly have to buy one used. However, the Xbox 360 was one of the best-selling consoles of all time, so you shouldn’t have any issue finding a controller.

Because of its age, the wired 360 controller often sells for under $20. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of newer options, it’s still a remarkably comfortable and precise gamepad. It also integrates beautifully with many PC games, making it an easy choice for the best budget controller on PC.

Honorable Mentions

Is a 20-year-old controller a little too old for your tastes? You could go with 8BitDo Ultimate C for around $30 or the HyperX Clutch Gladiate for $35.

The Best Controller for Customization: Victrix Pro BFG

The best controller for PC in terms of personalization is the Victrix Pro BFG. It’s certainly not in everyone’s budget at $180, but its modularity is hard to beat. Not only can you remap and reprogram the buttons as you please, but you can change the entire layout.

Want symmetrical joysticks? No problem. Do you prefer an Xbox-style layout with staggered sticks? You can do that, too. There are also four back paddles you can assign to give yourself even more options. It does lack rumble, which is a shame, but if you’re particular about your controller layouts, this may be the best gamepad for you.

Honorable Mentions

The Scuf Instinct Pro is similarly customizable but retails for $200, making it even less accessible. Alternatively, you could go with the ever-popular Xbox Elite Series 2, but it’s not quite as modular.

An 8BitDo Pro 2 controller

The Best Retro Controller: 8BitDo Pro 2

Sometimes, you just want to play the classics. The 8BitDo Pro 2 is the best gamepad if that’s what you’re after. The SNES-reminiscent design not only looks cool but will feel better when playing old-school indie games or emulating older titles.

Despite its retro appearance, the 8BitDo Pro 2 has a few modern conveniences, like programmable buttons and Bluetooth connectivity. It’s also just $35, making it a solid budget pick, too. It may not be the most comfortable for modern AAA games — apart from JRPGs and fighting games, perhaps — but it’s by far the best for old-school gaming.

Honorable Mentions

The market for retro PC controllers is admittedly small. That said, the Retro-Bit Legacy16 is a good alternative at $30, though it lacks some of the features of the 8BitDo Pro 2.

The Best Arcade Stick: Hori Fighting Stick Alpha

Fans of fighting games will want an arcade-style fight stick. Whether you’re into big names like Street Fighter and Tekken or prefer more innovative indie fighting games, the Hori Fighting Stick Alpha is the best PC controller for you.

Hori’s Alpha range comes in several iterations for different consoles and designs. All of them are compatible with PC, though, and feature swappable art plates. The Alpha isn’t cheap — it goes for around $200 — but it’s comfortable, responsive and perfectly emulates the arcade experience.

Honorable Mentions

The Nacon Daija is a good alternative, but it costs about $50 more and doesn’t have all the Alpha’s features. You could also go for the much cheaper 8BitDo Arcade Stick, but you’ll sacrifice some functionality for the price.

The Best Controller for PC Depends on Your Needs

No matter how much you can spend or what your preferences are, there’s a controller for you on this list. The best controller for PC may be up to you, but you can’t go wrong with these options.

Find the right PC controller for your needs by starting with your budget. Once you know that, determine what’s most important to you — comfort, customization or functionality with a certain type of game. From there, you’ll be able to find a gamepad that works for your kind of gaming.

Rogue Racers: 11 Of The Worst Mario Kart Characters Ever https://modded.com/games/the-worst-mario-kart-characters-ever/ https://modded.com/games/the-worst-mario-kart-characters-ever/#respond Fri, 07 Jun 2024 12:30:00 +0000 https://modded.com/?p=12370 Many avid gamers today owe their backstory to the Mario Kart franchise. Many avid gamers today owe their backstory to the Mario Kart franchise. Rightly so, considering the games have been pretty awesome. Whether it’s placing a well-timed banana peel or hurling a lighting bolt and squashing opponents as you race to the finish line, the series brought a new dimension to kart racing.

However, while most characters have brought their unique flair to the track through the years, some seem to be driving on the wrong side of Toad’s Turnpike. Obviously, this ranking is a subjective opinion, so don’t take it too seriously if your favorite is on the list. Without further ado, here are the worst Mario Kart characters ever.  “Let’s-a go.”

1. Pink Gold Peach

Pink, gold and metal — what an uninspiring combination. It’s like someone at Nintendo thought, “Metal Mario is cool, but you know what we need? A metallic princess!” Enter Pink Gold Peach, the most redundant character since… well, since ever. Her heavy metal nature makes her slow and cumbersome, more akin to driving a gold-plated tank than a kart. The robotic drawl in her voice is also a miss, as it sounds quite drab for a fun game about speed and finesse. Overall, Pink Gold Peach feels like an unnecessary addition to the roster, especially since the original Princess Peach already has many alternate costume options.

2. Honey Queen

The fair ruler of the Honeyhive Galaxy maneuvering through the race course is badass, but something feels a tad out of place. Perhaps it’s how the game designers had to resize her frame to fit on a kart. Her tiny fluttering wings also look off — like, why is she driving when she can fly? Racing as Honey Queen is not half as bad as you’d expect, but you often feel she’s better off thriving in her kingdom than on the tracks.

3. R.O.B.

R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy) is a relic from Nintendo’s past that should have stayed in the archives. The fuzzy robot first appeared in 2005 as a playable character in Mario Kart DS. As a racer, he’s stiff and awkward, lacking the flexibility to navigate Choco Mountain, Frappe Snowland and other treacherous tracks. R.O.B was instrumental to the growth of the video game industry, but nostalgia can’t save him from being a clunky driver.

4. The Baby Brigade

The Baby Brigade — Baby Mario, Baby Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Baby Bowser, Baby Wario and Baby Rosalina — are collectively the cutest racers. It’s a shame they’re also among the worst Mario Kart characters.

They’re not terrible on the tracks or anything, it’s that they’re an unnecessary addition. They’re miniature versions of the regulars, so there isn’t much intrigue there as you would with a brand new character. Besides, who wants to race against babies and launch honing blue shells at them?

5. Waluigi

Waluigi toy figure

Tall, lanky and always scheming, Waluigi is a fan favorite for his weirdness but not for his racing prowess. Overall, the character feels boring and overrated, as if he was only included so Luigi wouldn’t feel sad about not having his own archrival. In fairness, he’s proven to be a worthy adversary off the tracks, but on them, not so much.

6. Tanooki Mario

Everyone loves Mario, but his Tanooki counterpart feels like a lazy Halloween costume — he’s just Mario with a tail and ears. While the Tanooki suit is great in platforming games for its fluttering abilities, it adds nothing special to Mario Kart. It’s as if Nintendo ran out of ideas and slapped on a fursuit. He brings no unique advantages and is essentially just a cosplay version of Mario. Next!

7. Lakitu

It’s a bit odd to see a Lakitu as a playable character when there’s also one that serves as the referee of the races. What’s that about? Also, gamers are used to seeing these guys floating on clouds, so seeing one racing on the ground and being fished out by one of their own is weird.

Ultimately, Likatu is one of the most forgettable characters in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, even when playing the 48 additional courses from the game’s paid DLC.

8. Villagers

The Villagers from “Animal Crossing” are adorable in their own game, planting flowers and catching bugs. However, they seem ill-suited for the fast-paced, high-stakes world of Kart racing. Their generic driving style and lack of any standout traits make them unmemorable.

Part of the appeal of special characters from other franchises is their unique appearance. However, players don’t get this option in Mario Kart. Instead, the two Villagers seem unremarkable in a game where character value comes from the personality of its design.

9. Wiggler

Wigglers are formidable foes in “Super Mario World” and return in “Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2,” but perhaps that’s where their cameos in the franchise should have ceased. The playable character looks so out of place astride a kart, making it a bizarre addition to the roster. Plus, seeing the forearms flailing during turns and jumps on the tracks is distracting. Stick to squishing him in the platformers.

10. Shy Guy

Shy Guy might be a cute underling in the Mario series, but he actually has some pretty decent racing stats, especially when you equip the Leaf Tyres. The simple character design with their ominous masks also has enough mystery to make you want to try it out. But why would they call him “shy guy”? Additionally, his small stature and light vehicle make him easy to push around, making him largely unremarkable as Mario Kart Characters go.

11. Koopa Troopa

Koopa Troopa might be a classic character, but he offers nothing new or exciting to the roster. While his balanced stats make him an all-rounder, they also make him utterly ordinary. He doesn’t have the mischievous charm and flair of the rowdy koopalings. Playing as Koopa Troopa is often like choosing vanilla ice cream at a gourmet dessert buffet — safe, predictable and not very exciting.

The Worst Mario Kart Characters

So, there you have it — the 11 worst characters across the Mario Kart gaming universe. Sure, some of these racers might have their quirks and charms, but when it comes down to the nitty-gritty of kart racing, they come up short.

Whether it’s their awkward handling, lackluster stats or just plain redundancy, these characters are better suited as background cheerleaders than main competitors. Next time you’re gearing up to take on Rainbow Road or dodge shells in Bowser’s Castle, steer clear of these lackluster choices.

6 Upcoming Sports Games We Can’t Wait to Play https://modded.com/games/upcoming-sports-games-we-cant-wait-to-play/ https://modded.com/games/upcoming-sports-games-we-cant-wait-to-play/#respond Fri, 31 May 2024 16:20:17 +0000 https://modded.com/?p=8518 Turn 10 Studios is back to produce the eighth version of this sim racing game. The developer says Forza Motorsport 2023 will include new features like ray tracing and more realistic tire wear. Dynamic time-of-day changes are a neat feature we haven’t seen in other racing games. Some races are long enough to start in daylight and end under the stars, but the video game doesn’t reflect the time elapsed. Now, we’re getting better features.

Most sports video games are based on real leagues, but they transport you to fantasy worlds where you control the athletes. Imagine winning the NBA Finals, the World Cup and the Super Bowl without leaving your living room. Thanks to the upcoming sports games, you can have these dreams as long as you want. What sports video games are upcoming on the calendar? Here are the # we can’t wait to play.

6 Sports Games Coming Out Soon

2024 will be an excellent year for sports video games. Some titles will return after long absences, whereas other fan favorites will again hit the shelves. These six upcoming sports video games should be on your wishlist.

1. EA Sports College Football 25

A crowded football stadium

The wait is almost over. EA Sports College Football 25 will give players the first university gridiron game since 2013. The video game will debut on July 19, bringing back the fan-favorite game modes.

Dynasty lets you take the reins of any school, recruit elite athletes and win championships. Road to Glory returns as you enroll in college and try to win the Heisman Trophy. Will you take over Tennessee to build on the legacy of Peyton Manning, or will you carve a new path at a smaller school? Make the confetti rain on Akron as you win the College Football Playoff National Championship.

The college title is one of the most hyped new sports games coming out in 2024 because of the decade-long wait. What will be new in this game? You can build your squad through Ultimate Team, a game mode famous in Madden NFL titles. Fill your roster with old and new players to make your school stand out. Imagine Vince Young handing the ball to Reggie Bush as Calvin Johnson blocks on the side.

2. Skate

an overturned skateboard

Skate joins the list of upcoming sports games fans are clamoring for because of a long hiatus. EA released the most recent title — Skate 3 — in 2010 after a few popular games starting in 2007. The original titles were only available on consoles, but the upcoming version will be available on Steam. A February announcement confirmed the game will be on PC when it debuts.

So, when will EA release the new Skate game? The official launch date is uncertain, but Skate has said on social media that console testing will come later this year. PC gamers got an exclusive playtest of Skate in February and March. Unfortunately, information from these sessions is not public knowledge due to non-disclosure agreements (NDA). If you’re waiting for Skate, expect the game to debut later this year or early 2025.

3. Undisputed

A training boxed

If you want to box, there aren’t many video game options outside Wii Sports. Even then, a few rounds with Matt make you want to turn the console off and do something else. If you want boxing with a modern title, Undisputed gives you the ultimate fight night in one of the best new sports games coming out in 2024.

Boxing is one of the fiercest one-on-one sports, and you get to immerse yourself in the competition. News about Undisputed gives fans the first boxing game in a decade, as you’ll fight with Roy Jones Jr., Tyson Fury and other stars. Like other sports video games, the upcoming title lets you create a boxer and manage your career as you fight to the top. Will you be a cruiserweight, heavyweight or middleweight? The extensive customization gives you the power to choose.
Undisputed aims to give players incredible detail in each fight, with 60 different punches, footwork maneuvers and defensive strategies to win each match. You’ll start your career in small gyms before headlining pay-per-view matches in Las Vegas and Madison Square Garden.

4. F1 Manager 2024

an F1 race car circling a track

F1 Manager is back with another installment this July as you get behind the pit box of Red Bull, Ferrari, Mercedes and the other elite teams. This Frontier Developments game differs from the typical F1 games because you’re not steering the car. Instead, you develop a race strategy and find the best path to victory lane. When will you stop for fuel and change your racing tires? These decisions are crucial for getting on the podium and earning championships.

F1 Manager 2024 is one of the most anticipated new sports games coming out because of its latest features. The 2024 edition lets you create a team for the first time in the game’s history. You’ll set up the uniforms, car design and logo to make your machine the best-looking one on the track. Additionally, you’ll negotiate with sponsors to ensure your team’s funding and status within F1.

The new game leans into improved AI as you have to be on your toes against competitors. Your rivals will try to steal drivers and staff from your team, so keeping their morale and wallets happy is integral. However, you can only afford to pay your engineers so much money. How will you balance the personalities around the pit box?

5. Madden NFL 25

Qualcomm Football Stadium

As long as the NFL exists, you can nearly guarantee there will be a video game before the season begins. Madden NFL is one of the most popular sports video games, and the upcoming title will likely build on previous successes. Last year, Madden NFL 24 set a single-week record for digital units sold as the series grows. What’s new for this year’s edition?

The exciting rookie class is among the most anticipated additions. Caleb Williams is the new quarterback for the Chicago Bears, and he’ll compete with D.J. Moore, Rome Odunze and other young stars. The next Madden NFL video game will also give you a first look at Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr.

Madden NFL games are fundamentally the same title each year. However, the 2025 edition will look different with the gameplay. This August’s release will see a re-engineered physics system and enhanced FieldSENSE to make it feel even smoother. Scoring touchdowns with Travis Kelce will feel even more satisfying with better graphics and natural gameplay.

6. NBA 2k25

street art of Michael Jordan

Another staple in sports video games coming out in the fall includes NBA 2k25. The basketball title has hit the shelves annually since 1999 and is among the most popular sports titles. What should you expect from the next release?

The anticipated release date will likely be September 2024, after Labor Day weekend. One of the biggest questions surrounding each year’s 2k game is the cover athlete. Last year had a special edition with Kobe Bryant and Sabrina Ionescu, so who will grace the next cover? The game typically selects players who have yet to be the cover athlete. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jayson Tatum and Anthony Edwards could be leading contenders. Don’t forget about the three-time MVP Nikola Jokić.

The next edition of 2k25 should return many prominent game modes players love. Expect to see MyCAREER and MyTEAM as you lead squads to the NBA Finals. The 2024 Summer Olympics means 2k players should anticipate the men’s and women’s national teams to be available for play. Savor the men’s squad because it might be LeBron James’ last time playing in the Summer Olympics.

Sports Video Games Making Their Mark This Year

The first half of 2024 has already seen some fun sports video games debut. Have you played any of these titles yet? Some great games include:

  • MLB The Show 24
  • WWE 2k24
  • BMX Streets
  • TopSpin 2k25
  • Rugby 24
  • Star Racer
  • Turbo Golf Racing

Waiting for the Upcoming Sports Video Games

Sports video games are unique because they let you participate in competitive leagues. What titles are you looking forward to playing this year? EA Sports College Football 25 has stolen headlines lately, but the other games will be just as fun.

Capitalism is an inescapable force in the gaming world. Whether you’re playing a game on your phone and encounter levels locked behind microtransactions or have to pay for the latest Elden Ring downloadable content (DLC), studios are always looking for ways to make money. So why do game studio shutdowns seem so common?

Xbox recently announced that it would shut down multiple studios, including Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. Even producing a game as successful as Hi-Fi Rush didn’t secure Arkane Austin’s future. Here’s why studio shutdowns remain a trend and may not slow down anytime soon.

Closed Studios Secure IPs

People often talk about how massive companies like Xbox and Microsoft could easily sell their studios instead of closing them down. It would save jobs and keep projects in production for the fans anxiously waiting for them. That might even be the ethical thing to do, but major brands don’t see it that way.

Riot Games announced in January that it would shut down its label, Riot Forge. The label had recently created Bandle Tale. Described as a cute deep-dive into League of Legends, the game was popular but not super financially successful. If Riot Games had responded to this loss in profit by selling Riot Forge instead, Riot Games would have lost the right to collect revenue from Bandle Tale. It would be an even more significant financial loss in the long run.

Xbox and Microsoft would lose money similarly by selling their studios to other companies. The intellectual property (IP) for each studio’s games would go with the minor studios, causing a financial loss for the companies that formerly owned them. The revenue loss isn’t a concern if the studios no longer exist. The games continue being available to play after their studios shut down.

Subscriptions Offset Revenue Loss

Gaming used to require going to a store to purchase the latest hard copy of whatever game you wanted. Now, everything’s accessible online. Subscription services make that twice as monetizable for big companies.

Xbox offers Game Pass, which is a monthly or annual subscription connecting players with new releases instantaneously, plus exclusive discounts and access to all games made under Xbox studios. It generated the company an additional $309 million in the final quarter of 2023 alone. If Xbox stands to save additional money by shutting a studio down without too much of a deficit due to reliable revenue streams like Game Pass, shutdowns become more likely.

You might love playing Assassin’s Creed Valhalla due to its realistic depiction of Viking culture and incredible graphics. The game’s success, which generated higher sales than any other Ubisoft game after crossing the $1 billion mark, didn’t stop the company from laying off employees in 2023 and earlier this year. In addition to the revenue from the Ubisoft+ subscription service, its parent company, Xbox, didn’t stand to lose much from the shutdown alongside other profitable streams like Game Pass.

Despite record-high sales and subscription service profits, Ubisoft has still seen massive staff layoffs.

Market Factors Also Influence Studio Lifespans

There’s some truth to the idea that game production has grown more costly over the last decade. Bigger games require extensive teams. Team members have to cover their bills, which rise with inflation. They ask for higher pay and if the game studios raise wages, each game must be even more profitable.

Findings from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) noted that video games used to cost between $50-$150 million to make, but games coming out in the next two years average around $200 million and may cost even more. When a game comes out, its development is essentially over. The tech company that owns the studio may shut it down because it can’t keep paying $200 million to keep everyone working on less demanding patch updates and DLC.

The economy also plays a role in why game studios are still shuttering. People aren’t spending as much in 2024, causing a slight economic slowdown that requires a slowdown in production. If there’s less demand, companies can’t secure as much funding for big games.

More minor games requiring smaller teams become more of a priority. Production on bigger games might also pause until there’s more demand. In the meantime, companies shut down game studios. There’s the hope that the team members can find work when the games return to production, but there’s no guarantee it will happen soon after their studio closes.

It’s also important to note that consumer interests have shifted. In 2020 and 2021, most people stayed at home in quarantine. Video games became a welcomed way to pass the time. PC game revenue grew by 7.4% or $35.6 billion during the same time. The same research also shows a 32.8% spike in people playing mobile games throughout that period.

With PC and mobile gaming steadily rising, Microsoft has become increasingly reliant on its GamePass service.

Now, people can resume their typical lives with vaccines, masking and fewer public restrictions on gathering in enclosed spaces. Video game profits have declined each year since, reducing the need for as many game studios churning out the same amount of content.

AI Is Influencing Game Production Teams

You can’t reflect on changes in the tech industry without checking up on AI involvement. Companies like Microsoft use AI tools to speed up production and save money. Artificial intelligence can churn out storylines and dialogue for non-playable characters (NPCs).

The monsters you need to fight in video games soon won’t require production teams. You might have loved solving puzzles and fighting enemies in Sonic Frontiers, but Sega recently partnered with an AI company to let players generate their own monsters in future games. It might result in fun battles, but it decreases the need for expansive development teams and additional game studios.

Company leadership teams across industries often publish statements about AI not replacing human creativity, but businesses operate solely to generate a profit. If AI will save money during video game production by eliminating the expenses associated with employees, companies will likely continue shutting down studios.

Watch for More Closures

Unfortunately, studio shutdowns will likely continue in the video game industry. Unless there’s a higher demand for big games, increases in consumer expenditures and potentially less profit from other revenue streams, closures aren’t going to hurt tech companies as much as the people who get laid off.

Pokemon is an undisputed classic video game series. It’s one of the many reasons to own a Switch and has enough variety across its nine mainline generations to keep you entertained for hours. But across all these games, what are the fastest Pokemon?

While every stat is important, it’s hard to overlook the value of being able to strike first. So, if you’re interested in building a quick-hitting team or are just curious, here’s a look at the fastest Pokemon across all mainline games.

Before getting started — we’re not including mega evolutions in this list, as they’re temporary and you can only use one at a time. Now let’s get into it.

Hand holding red and white Pokeball toy

1. Regieleki

It shouldn’t surprise anyone that the fastest Pokemon of all time is a legendary. Regieleki — which didn’t appear until Gen Eight — has a staggering base speed of 200 and a max speed of 548.

Interestingly, Regieleki’s listing on the official Pokemon website still shows room to grow in the speed stat column. Could that mean a future game will introduce an even faster Pokemon? You’ll have to wait and see.

2. Deoxys (Speed Forme)

Next in this list is, unsurprisingly, another legendary — Deoxys. More specifically, it’s Deoxys in Speed Forme, which has a base speed stat of 180 and a maximum of 504.

While 20 points lower than Regieleki is quite the gap, Speed Forme Deoxys is still quite a bit faster than everything below it. As such, it’s remained at the top of the list for years. In fact, it held the number one spot since its Gen Three debut up until Regieleki came along.

3. Ninjask

The honor of the third-fastest Pokemon and the fastest non-legendary goes to Ninjask. This Gen Three bug Pokemon has a base speed of 160 and a max of 460. That may not be anything close to Deoxys or Regieleki, but it’s lightning-fast compared to the entire Pokedex.

Ninjask also has the Speed Boost ability, which temporarily raises its speed stat after each turn in a battle. That, on top of its blistering base speed, makes a powerful combo.

4. Pheromosa

Next in the ranking is Pheromosa, one of the alternate-dimension Ultra Beasts from Sun and Moon. It’s also the fastest of that line of Pokemon, coming at a 151 base speed and 441 max.

Like Ninjask, Pheromosa also has an ability that can increase its speed in battle. Beast Boost raises your Pokemon’s highest stat every time you knock out an opponent, and with Pheromosa, that’s speed.

Collection of old Pokemon cards

5. Electrode, Deoxys (Attack and Normal Forme) and Calyrex

In fifth place, there’s a four-way tie. Electrode, Attack Forme Deoxys, Normal Forme Deoxys and Calyrex in Shadow Rider form all have the same base speed — 150. They also share a max speed of 438.

As mentioned earlier, we’re not including mega evolutions here. However, this tie would include two more Pokemon if you did. Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Alakazam also fall into the 150 base speed club.

6. Zacian (Crowned Sword)

The sixth fastest Pokemon is the Crowned Sword version of Zacian. This is the version that graces the cover of Pokemon Sword, the second-best-selling Pokemon generation, and has a base speed stat of 148 with a max of 434.

To get Crowned Sword Zacian, you’ll need to give the legendary Pokemon a Rusted Sword. In Sword, that’s as simple as catching Zacian, but you’ll have to buy the item at auction in Porto Marinada in Scarlet and Violet.

7. Accelgor

Right behind Zacian is Accelgor. This Gen Five bug-type Pokemon has a 145 base speed stat and a max of 427.

Accelgor may be a bit of a surprise on this list because its pre-evolution, Shelmet, has a base speed of just 25. That’s just one more reason not to give up on weak early-stage Pokemon. The likes of Accelgor and Gyarados show that some of the worst first stages evolve into some of the best.

8. Zeraora

Zeraora doesn’t fall far behind in the list of the fastest Pokemon ever. Its base speed is just two points below Accelgor’s at 143, and it has a max of 423.

Despite not appearing in the series until Gen Seven, Zeraora is becoming something of a mainstay in Pokemon. It’s been in every generation since. That popularity, plus its impressive speed, makes it a great addition to your team across multiple titles.

9. Dragapult

Next on the list and taking the honor of the fastest ghost-type Pokemon is Dragapult. This pseudo-legendary and instant fan favorite boasts a base speed of 142 with a max stat of 421.

On top of being fast, Dragapult has an impressive move set and a beefy attack stat. It’s also immune to stat-lowering effects, so it’ll keep that attack and speed for the duration of a battle. Dragapult won’t evolve from Drakloak until level 60, but it’s more than worth the effort to get it there.

10. Zacian and Zamazenta

Rounding out the list of the fastest Pokemon is Zacian in the form you first catch it in, also known as the Hero of Many Battles. It’s not nearly as quick without a Rusty Sword, but its base stat is still 138, with a max of 412 — far from slow.

Zacian shares this spot with its Pokemon Shield counterpart, Zamazenta. Unlike Zacian, Zamazenta gets slower when it takes on its true, item-holding form, but its Hero of Many Battles form is just as quick as Zacian’s.

Crochet Pikachu doll

What Is the Fastest Pokemon Type?

Now you know which specific Pokemon are the fastest, but what about types? That honor goes to the electric type, which you may have noticed from the multiple electric entries on this list.

While everyone’s favorite electric mouse and excellent starter Smash character, Pikachu, doesn’t break the top 10, this category has the highest max and median speed stats of any typing. Flying and psychic Pokemon aren’t far behind, though, so look for these types for some variety without sacrificing speed.

Strike First with the Fastest Pokemon

Using the fastest Pokemon will give you an edge in battle, especially against higher-HP but slower opponents. If that sounds like your kind of strategy, start with this list. These are the quickest Pokemon you’ll find across all nine mainline generations.

Boasting stunning graphics and realistic gameplay, the best soccer games provide an immersive experience that will make you feel like you’re on the field with your favorite team.

All games on this list have satisfied millions of fans worldwide who, at one time or another, have hopped on their PlayStation consoles to play soccer. Whether you agree or disagree with this ranking, the important thing is that it sparks plenty of fond memories. Let the arguments begin.

Best Soccer Games Ranked: Methodology

Soccer, or football as it’s more commonly known, is the world’s most popular sport, engaging over 4 billion fans across the globe. Naturally, establishing a consistent and credible ranking methodology will be challenging. Everyone probably has one or two games they’ll swear were the best ever and might be expecting them to rank higher.

That’s why in ranking the best football video games on the PS console, this list simply aggregates the top-rated games across multiple review sites. Using this approach can provide a more objective look at how each entry stacks against the other. It also allows you to appreciate the changes over the years — from gameplay and graphics to innovation.

However, it’s important to note that while ranking the best soccer games offers a solid foundation for comparison, each entry’s true essence and impact go beyond numbers. The cultural footprints left by each game and their overall contribution to the global football community also bear weight.

1. FIFA 14

FIFA’s access to official licensing means it is unrivaled in terms of authenticity in football gaming. But that’s just one of many aspects of FIFA 14 that make it the best soccer game ever played on a PS console. Released in September 2013 for the PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable and Vita, the game had all the right features to deliver a truly enjoyable experience.

To be clear, FIFA 14 doesn’t really have a big marquee feature. Instead, it consolidates all the innovations from previous installments along with small yet hugely impactful changes. Most notable is the more natural way players move and interact with each other and the ball. The shift in body weight when they suddenly change direction adds a more realistic sense of momentum as they build up speed. Improved player movement also resulted in better dribbling, making runs feel more thrilling and goals scored more gratifying.

2. FIFA 12

The introduction of tactical defending and precision dribbling are the standout features of FIFA 12. While doing a slide tackle in previous games was your go-to for regaining possession, defending on FIFA 12 is more nuanced and follows a more authentic gameplay. Unnecessarily sliding toward an opponent will leave your player in the wake of a speedy winger or striker as he sprints at your goalkeeper.

Precision dribbling introduced more flair to your gaming experience. Tapping the L1 button while moving with the ball at your player’s feet gave you that extra burst of finesse past a defender. Oh, what fun times were there with this function, especially with naturally gifted dribblers like Andres Iniesta and Ronaldinho?

3. Pro Evolution Soccer 2013

PES 2013 will likely make it onto any football lover’s best soccer games of all time. Cristiano Ronaldo deservedly graced the cover following his scintillating form at Real Madrid and budding professional rivalry with Lionel Messi.

What makes PES 2013 truly stand out is the amazing on-field gameplay. Passing was smooth, player positioning resembled real-life settings and even the player reactions were superbly genuine. Overall, the immersive gaming experience kept the controller glued to your hands for hours.

4. Pro Evolution Soccer 6 (2006)

Featuring the best Premier League defender, John Terry, on the cover, PES 6 was a truly defining installment in the entire franchise. It was one of those “you had to play it to really experience it” games that further widened the gap in the FIFA or PES debate.

PES 6 was one of the best games of the PS 2 era, bringing all the greatest football stars to life on your screen. The intricately designed gameplay boasted advanced tactics and high-intensity moments that football lovers worldwide came to expect in subsequent releases.

5. ISS Pro Evolution

Before PES, there was International Superstar Soccer, which you’ll remember fondly if you owned a PS1 back in the day. ISS Pro Evolution was the 1999 installment of the beloved franchise, introducing a new level of depth and realism to the game. One of the game’s most exciting features was the introduction of the Master League mode, which allowed gamers to build their teams, negotiate player transfers and compete in a conventional football season.

6. FIFA 21

FIFA 21 Game Screen on PS4

As the Covid-19 pandemic halted footballing worldwide, avid gamers kept playing. FIFA 21 improved the somewhat lackluster gameplay of its predecessor with a number of small changes that enhanced the overall gaming experience. On-field passes and crosses flowed smoother and play movements on the ball were noticeably more lifelike.

One of the best features was the realistic speed mirroring of in-game players compared to their real-life counterparts. For instance, when using speedsters like Kylian Mbappe and Leroy Sane, you would actually leave bedraggled defenders behind after dribbling past them.

7. EA Sports FC 24

After selling more than 325 million copies over the past three decades, EA Sports and FIFA announced the decision to split after the publisher balked at paying a premium to obtain the famous FIFA branding. As a result, gamers expecting a FIFA 24 soccer game got EA FC 24 instead. The gameplay doesn’t sway much from its predecessors and is, in fact more enjoyable than the previous installments.

Worthy Inclusions

  • FIFA 2010 (PlayStation 2 and 3)
  • FIFA 2018 (PlayStation 3 and 4)
  • PES 2008 (PlayStation 2, 3 and Portable)
  • PES 2017 (PlayStation 3 and 4)
  • FIFA 2016 (PlayStation 3 and 4)
  • PES 2020 (PlayStation 4)
  • Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions (PlayStation 4)
  • FIFA Street 3 (Playstation 3)

The Best Soccer Games On PlayStation

Over the years, PS console gamers have been treated to a vast selection of soccer games and it’s almost impossible to say which one truly deserves top spot. However, this list does sufficient justice and hopefully inspires you to pick up the pad once more for a scintillating soccer match or two.

If someone told you ages ago that you could play a game by doing nothing, they wouldn’t believe you. What’s the point? Turns out, idle games are a nice distraction from the heavy time and attention investments of modern titles. Explore the best options for having something to do when you have a few minutes of downtime.

What Is an Idle Game?

Idle games are also sometimes called incremental games or clickers, depending on the mechanics and gameplay style. Typically, they refer to games with minimal player interactivity, where linear progression occurs offline. Some even call them games that play themselves, though the definition has expanded to more involvement variants and styles over the years. This is likely due to the rise in mobile games.

The best idle games combine these elements. The first is longevity. Developers want players to engage with idle games potentially for years. Therefore, the progression must be expansive yet scalable in a rewarding enough way. People should feel their sense of progression and gameplay elements change as time passes, depending on their degree of engagement, obviously.

Additionally, there is a grinding element. Usually, players create automated systems to farm for resources, currency, levels, experience or other metrics. Seeing numbers change provides players with a sense of accomplishment. This happens in real time, either by letting time pass and letting the game work as it’s closed, or by short spurts of active gameplay. This could be more traditional or be primarily click-based.

So, what are some of the best idle games with incremental elements?

Fallout Shelter

From one of Bethesda’s most beloved franchises is an idle game variant. It has the classic aesthetic of the popular game with a management twist. Oversee a Vault of Dwellers, and time passes as they leave to go on missions. They come back with resources you need to survive in the shelter. The game is all about survival. Fortunately, there is more depth than that. You can also foster relationships and see them blossom in real time.

Forager

Forager is an innovative title from Humble Bundle and HopFrog because it blends the elements of an idle game with a crafting experience that you’ll want to actively engage with. With nostalgic pixel graphics and a banger soundtrack, you play as a cute marshmallow-looking fellow ready to fight, harvest and expand. Explore dungeons, find secrets and level up for new ways to get rich and make the most resources imaginable.

AdVenture Communist or Capitalist

This is an idle game in two flavors. AdVenture Capitalist is the original, which lets you become the mega-millionaire you’ve always dreamed. This comedic idle game is a commentary on wealth accumulation, as most of the money is generated while you sit and do, well, nothing. The game takes fun twists and turns as you make your corporate vision a reality.

In the Communist version, you combat all of your progress from the previous game by making a collaborative resource management system. What starts off as a simple farming-style sim gets more involved, especially as the developers send out regular updates and challenges weekly.

Cats & Soup

In beautiful pastels is one of the coziest idle games that exist — Cats & Soup. All they do is exist in a forest you build out to make new types of soup. Gather different breeds of cats and ingredients like fish and vegetables to make you countless dollars. Unfortunately, like many idle games, there are microtransactions. However, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the game if you don’t want to go past the free-to-play elements.

someone taking a picture of cats with their phone

Neko Atsume

Neko Atsume is a cat collecting game where players design a dwelling to attract different types of cats. Yes, this is the second idle game about cats. No, it is not the last one you’ll ever come across. There are plenty of cat-laden games not featured here to get a cuteness fix.

Like many idle games, it doesn’t have a concrete ending. However, the point is to adjust the home and place certain treats and toys to collect and photograph new breeds. Its popularity earned a sequel, coming out in 2024.

Idle Zoo Tycoon

Who doesn’t want to relieve their glory days from building intricate yet inefficient zoos in the original Zoo Tycoon in a more bite-sized, idle format? Idle Zoo Tycoon has myriad options for constantly improving your grounds. Just like in traditional tycoon games, you construct the perfect tourist attraction to garner more guests, and, therefore, more money. Use that money to ever-expand the land to house more animals — then rinse and repeat.

If zoos aren’t your vibe, there is also Idle Theme Park Tycoon.

AFK Arena

Are there idle RPGs? For fans of Genshin Impact and similar games, AFK Arena could scratch that itch of feeling like you’re playing an in-depth RPG with the low-stakes grind of an idle game. It has a pretty high learning curve compared to other idle games, but it’s nice to see this genre have diverse difficulty options. There are plenty of ways to set up your party and learn various builds. The game updates regularly, so the meta is always changing to keep things interesting.

two people playing phone games

Cookie Clicker

This list wouldn’t be complete without arguably the most legendary idle clicker out there — Cookie Clicker. Made by Julien “Orteil” Thiennot in 2013, it is often considered the world’s first successful incremental game. The goal is to bake cookies by clicking on the game’s big cookie icon. However, players can purchase cursors and other resources to do the work for you.

The game’s seemingly endless support has expanded on its foundation, adding complex exponential growth features and really learning from its dark humor and cosmic horror elements. The game has a cult fanbase that took over a decade to form.

The Best Idle Games for Casual Gamers

Idle games are incorporating more mechanics than they used to when they first became popular. Many incorporate active gameplay alongside the passive elements, making games more engaging in the long term. What are some of your favorite idle games that allow you to enjoy little pockets of time?

Are you always on the lookout for experiences that push the boundaries of gaming? 2024 has been quite a year so far, offering plentiful open-world experiences that will keep you riveted. From sailing the high seas to exploring dystopian cities, this year’s lineup promises vast and detailed adventures. Discover the best open-world games of this year and let each one immerse you in the most realistic gameplay.

1. Ark 2

One of the best open-world games you can’t miss this year is Studio Wildcard’s Ark 2 — the long-awaited predecessor to one of the top prehistoric survival games. This sequel enhances every aspect of the gameplay, from improved graphics to more realistic dinosaurs. Players can also look forward to a more immersive narrative with engaging character development and expanded multiplayer features.

In Ark 2, you must survive in a world that blends the ancient with the futuristic. The game’s environment opens you up to ecosystems that push the boundaries of exploration and discovery. Whether you’re looking to build a fortress or battle it out against fierce predators, Ark 2 has endless activities for you.

2. Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 plunges players into a world of magic, mystery and monstrous foes. This open-world adventure offers an expanded map with more intricate landscapes and weather patterns. Players can expect a more refined combat system, allowing for more personalized and tactical engagements with enemies.

The game builds upon the original’s “pawn” system, where you can customize and develop your followers. This makes every player’s journey unique, as their choices deeply impact how their companions evolve and interact within the world.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 also introduces new classes and abilities, giving players more freedom to do what they wish with their character. With these enhancements, the game offers an interactive fantasy world. Every decision you make leads to new pathways and formidable challenges.

3. Gray Zone Warfare

Gray Zone Warfare is another groundbreaking addition to the open-world genre. It involves tactical combat with the complexity of geopolitical conflicts. This game sets itself apart by situating players in a near future where diplomacy and warfare blur.

Players thrust themselves into a world where they must wade through the murky waters of international relations. To influence global outcomes, you must use military might and covert operations. The game’s open world replicates the real world, with politics that respond to the player’s actions and decisions. It challenges you to think critically, where the line between ally and adversary perpetually shifts.

4. GreedFall II: The Dying World

GreedFall 2 takes players back into a world with a dark colonial narrative. It sets the stage in a newly conceived realm of Gacane, far before the original game’s events. Players embody a character originally from the island of Teer Fradee. However, their person has been captured and forced into Gacane with a mission to stop a character from conquest and domination.

With rich and expansive gameplay, GreedFall offers a world of unexplored territories and urban environments. Players will encounter new allies and foes and unravel ancient secrets that could change the fate of their world.

5. The Lost Wild

This survival horror adventure could be one of the best open-world games upon its release in late 2024 or early 2025. In The Lost Wild, you’ll find yourself stranded on an island teeming with prehistoric creatures. Unlike previous dinosaur-themed games, this one has a mix between realism and immersion. Dinosaurs have always been portrayed as monsters terrorizing humans. Yet, this game also captures the essence of natural creatures inhabiting a wild ecosystem.

Players must survive in this dangerous world, using their wits and survival skills to avoid becoming prey. The game focuses on stealth and interaction, encouraging players to use natural cover and terrain to their advantage. Crafting also plays a crucial role. Players need to create tools and shelter to live in the island’s harsh conditions.

Beyond surviving, you must also uncover the island’s secrets. You will learn more about the dinosaurs and the history of the mysterious island itself. With a blend of survival horror, adventure and mystery, The Lost Wild is a must-play for anyone fascinated with the age of dinosaurs.

6. Marvel’s Wolverine

Marvel’s Wolverine will bring one of the most iconic X-Men characters to life in this open-world game. Set in a vividly rendered universe, players explore the depth of Logan’s character — from his rugged past to his fierce battles.

The game allows you to revel in the raw power of Wolverine, with gameplay focused on intense combat, regeneration and stealthiness. Of course, you will get to use Wolverine’s Adamantium claws for brutal combats. You can also expect the game to offer expansive exploration, similar to Sony’s Spider-Man.

The game’s narrative incorporates themes of redemption, control, and the animalistic nature of Wolverine. It offers a storyline that is emotionally engaging and action-packed.

7. Crimson Desert

Crimson Desert is set to be a visually stunning RPG that combines high-fantasy elements with a gritty, realistic medieval setting. Developers designed the game to deliver a narrative involving Macduff, a mercenary struggling to reclaim his land and form his destiny. As you travel through the continent of Pywel, you will encounter mythical creatures and characters with their own stories and motives.

The game’s open world offers strategic combat and exploration. Yet, it also comes with numerous side quests and community activities. You can build and manage camps, trade, and partake in large-scale siege warfare. Every aspect of Crimson Desert provides a fulfilling experience that will captivate you with its deep lore and beauty.

Rise of the Ronin takes place in a pivotal era in Japan’s history, the final years of the Edo period. In this game, you take on the role of a Ronin, a masterless samurai set in a nation on the brink of monumental change. The game embodies historical events with fantastical elements, providing a deep narrative for players.

The freedom and fluidity of the game allow you to explore its world, which is prosperous with danger and opportunity. Combat is intricate with the precision and discipline of samurai warfare. Meanwhile, it also incorporates the masterful abilities and arsenal typical of a Ronin. You can engage in sword fights, utilize stealth and employ traditional or improvised weaponry.

It also dives into this time’s social and political roles, where you will have to make alliances, confront corrupt officials and participate in battles. Your choices will also influence the story’s progression, reflecting the Ronin’s journey through loyalty, betrayal and survival.
